PNotes Portable 1.0.1 Pre-Release 3

Superseded by new release:
https://portableapps.com/node/8511

I've just posted a beta of PNotes Portable (as suggested by Have Some Patience). PNotes is a sticky note utility that allows you to post sticky notes on your screen. It has multiple display options as well as a handy feature to schedule notes to pop up. It's small (under 1MB) and works well on Windows 2000 and up. Please give it a try and post your feedback.

Wow.

I didn't know it was that small, that's great.

hehe

I tested PNotes and changed... Blum

I keep stickies in my main PC (as non portable) for work, but now I'm using PNotes on my PDrive for personal... it just need to more things that stickies have 1) ability to change font colors, 2) ability to change paper color (in the basic yellow skin, at least).

You can

Just right click on the top of the note and click adjust. In there, you can change the font face, size and color.

Unfortunately, there is no way to change the note color as it's a skin, i.e just PNG image. When I just started the program I hade to make a decision - use skins or background colors. And I made a decision - good or bad - so notes cannot be resized, and cannot change the color - because it's not a color.

Hi Lamer,

and welcome Smile

Yes, please Keep It Simple.
You will find that in this group you will be asked for many "enhancements".
If you try to make them all you will wind up with an app the size of MS Word Sad , or a release delay equal to that of the PAM v 1.89.73.16c RC27 Blum

You have a good basic app Smile Don't let us goad you into making it a lifetime project. A few modifications or options would be nice but simplicity has it's own beauty too.

Keep up the good work.

So far so good

I haven't had much chance to play with it, since I'm at work right now, but it installed without problems, and I haven't found any issues so far.

Looking forward to an official release.

What's the diff

John,

As you update the Pre-Releases could you let us know what changed.

I know that PR2 was a fix.
Does PR3 fix something wrong in PR2, or is it adding something?

If PR3 is a fix is there something I need to correct/undo/fix from using PR2.

For something that is really an absolutely worthless toy I have found myself using it several times since yesterday Blum

Help files, Typos

It was help files (they didn't launch from the app... this was fixed by the PNotes author himself who is supportive of this effort) and typos. It got lost in the comments because it wasn't a normal beta announcement where I update the main topic and explain what's fixed with each PR.

Thanks

John,

Thanks for the reply.

The only thing I don't like about it so far is that the dates in the schedule (sk) or should that be schedule (sh) are in the European format Blum

That will take some getting used to as I assume it is part of the program and there is nothing we can do about it Sad

Maybe

I figured it used the system setting since the dates appear in mm/dd/yyyy as is set as my system default. Perhaps it could be settable in a later release.

Andrey (the author) is supportive of making it portable, so perhaps he'll consider it. I may see if I can convince him to join the forums and participate in the discussion.

Time format

Dam,

I just realized that time format is also in European/Military/24hr style Sad
Now that is a pain in the butt.

Help file issue

The help file launches now when right clicking on the systray icon and selecting "Help". Problem is it launches in a maximized window (annoying). If you double click on the .chm help file itself it launches "normal size". (I realize the program author will probably have to fix this).

If the program author reads this, please post a quickie tutorial on your website on how to create skin files and maybe we can get some of the graphics whizzes around here to create some skins for the app.

Sound ?

In the original thread (node ??) Buddha implied, or I inferred, that the program did not have an alert sound when using the scheduler. It does. It is a gentle chime.

If the author is going to be involved with this project perhaps an option to turn the sound off, or change the sound (I could at times see wanting a loud, attention getting sound)

side note:
Help file can be launched from the system tray icon but not from the control panel.

I have no problem finding sounds.

My question would be what do with them?
As I can not see a .wav or other sound file in PNP I could not merely replace it with another sound.

With the author, A Note has a feature that when you click on the SystemTray icon, it will create a new note. Maybe some optional feature like this with PNotes with a double click. I guess it will be better if the author it able to get in on the discussion.

Control panel -> Help issue

If the original app author reads this, if I bring up the Control Panel and select "Help", it doesn't launch the help file.

Also, what's the point of the second column from the left in the Control Panel? It just shows an icon for the note. Does it provide some functionality? Is it really needed?

And here the author comes

Hello everybody!
First of all thank you very much for your good words and for your suggestions.
The bugs with help file maximized size and its unlaunching from Control Panel are fixed (I hope :)) and all the files are at their place:
http://lamer.byethost32.com/projects.php?lang=C#C%20Apps
1. Tim Clark wrote about the second column in Control Panel:
"At the very least it indicates that the note has not yet been saved, I can't tell if it can indicate anything else."
Yes, exactly, it indicates changed, but not saved yet note and note just created (because it's not changed and there is nothing to save - but you may just get lost if you create many notes)
2. BuddhaChu wrote:
"If the program author reads this, please post a quickie tutorial on your website on how to create skin files and maybe we can get some of the graphics whizzes around here to create some skins for the app."
Yes! It will be great! Because I am absolutely blockhead in graphic works! Actually the skin consists from one big PNG image for skin itself and two small PNG images for "system" buttons. All images with magenta color background. I've just put the sample at: http://lamer.byethost32.com/files/skinancient.zip These images I then compile into DLL with their dimensions saved as kind of resource and one help function for extracting images. So I will be very, very glad to get new skins!
3. The datetime formats in schedule dialog - I'll try to set them to "real" system formats.
4. The sounds - I'll add ability to turn them off or choose a custom one.

Did I miss something?

I'll be glad to get more suggestions.

P.S.
All the changes I'll be able to do the next week, because I'm on accidential vacation now and hate to work at home with one only monitor. Smile

Cool

Welcome.
Its nice to have the author here Wink
Did you see the german lang file John posted here. Maybe you want to include it into your lang pack.
And in this thread we had the question of the language-flags. There are only 4 in the included file and it would be nice to have one for every language.
What format/program do you use for the "flag file"?

Expect More

One of the cool things about running this project is that we get to take great open source software and expose it to thousands of people. Once released, you can expect a lot more translations. And a LOT more users... couple thousand a day at least.

PS - Please increment the version number with each change so we can keep track of which version is which.

On "Preferences" dialog

On "Preferences" dialog check the "Save all on program exit" and "Confirm saving". You wiil be prompted to save all not saved notes on exit. Or, if "Confirm saving" is not checked, these notes will be saved automatically.
But -exit from command line I will add to TODO list

Since you're still

Since you're still developing features, I suggest a configurable global hotkey (like Shift+Win+Letter) that will show/hide all notes.

Advice is needed

Good evening (morning, afternoon), gentlemen (ladies)!
I need your advice for the next release of PNotes: I don't think that anybody else except me (for testing) will use more than two (max three) languages for the program. So may be there is no need for special list of available languages (and headache with adding flags icons and maintenance special language pack) - but just submenu with available translations. So everyone could download just the language he really needs and not the hole pack.

Ditch the flags

Ditch the flags. While they look cool, they're not worth the extra maintenance. Other apps don't use them. That way, people can work on translations on their own and add them in and they'll show up just like regular ones do. Then, you can post them on your site between releases as people work on them rather than being forced to rush another release to add a flag.

And for size, you could include 50 languages and it would only add 100 to 150k to the install size. Language files themselves are tiny.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Yes but

if I (the user) dont want/need/use the other languages, I can still delete the lang files (save space!) and they wont show up.
So I would vote for letting them in.
If it is too hard updating the flags, maybe leave them out but that would be a pity as they are a nice eye candy.
Just my 2 cents.

It's not hard to update flags - I have them all in one archive and can put on my site for downloading, but I still think that possible translator should not worry about icon. And possible user should not download unneeded files for the sake of single translation.
On the other hand, I like the icons too. And it wll be a pity for me to throw them away Smile Sad

Are the flags big?

Otherwise you could add them all to the "flag file" and just give out a list mith the countries and numbers so the translators can add the flag themselves by just using the right number.
But thats only doable if it doesnt increase package size too much.“I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing. I think it is much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers that might be wrong.” - Richard P. Feynman

That's the way it works now.

That's the way it works now. But now I add flags to "flag file" on-demand, it includes only 7 flags at the moment. The full file will be about 250-300 K, while the program itself is about 140 K Smile

Is there a way

to include the flag files into the kang file?
Then everybody could make their own lang files and if you make them "official", you could add the flag.
But I think thats not possible.

Unfortunately there is no

Unfortunately there is no way. The LNG file is just INI file. Moreover, it's stored as Unicode. I've tried to save the icon in file as byte array - without success. And turn the LNG file to some kind of DLL - I don't think this is a good idea. After all, it's just icon. But looks nice...:)

Why not provide the option within the installer?

Why not set up the installer like GIMP Portable (and Pidgin Portable Pre-Release) and give the option in the installer to include the language packs?

That way those that want the languages can include them, and those that don't can leave them out to save the space.
