https://portableapps.com/news/2007-08-13_-_pidgin_portable_2.1.0
I've just posted a test release of Pidgin Portable 2.1.0. Pidgin, formerly known as Gaim, is a multi-protocol instant messaging client that works with AOL, MSN, Yahoo, Google, ICQ, Jabber and other networks all within an easy to use interface. This new test release now fully supports using a CommonFiles\GTK folder (as GIMP does). It also has built-in support for Pidgin preferences paths so your buddy icons and other settings will work as you move PCs.
The installer will not affect an existing Gaim Portable installation, but if you install Pidgin Portable to your PortableApps directory alongside your existing GaimPortable directory, it will automatically copy your existing Gaim Portable settings to Pidgin Portable. The package is an 11MB download and requires 13.6 to 43.9MB to install depending on whether you select to install the translations or not.
Note: May take a few minutes to hit the download servers
Download Pidgin Portable 2.1.0 Pre-Release 1
For encryption, you can add Pidgin-Encryption to Pidgin Portable:
Download Pidgin-Encryption Portable 3.0 Pre-Release 1
You can also add Off The Record:
Download Pidgin-OTR Portable 3.1 Pre-Release 1
Please give it a try and post your feedback.
Thanks,
John
Thanks for providing the OTR and Encryption also. Everything seems to be working fine on this end so far.

Overall, it seems to work good.
But there were a few minor things that I wanted to bring up.
On first load, the application loads behind any other open application (such as Firefox). This isn't too big of deal, but just something I'm not used to.
The other thing was that the system tray icon was set to "On unread messages". It's something that could easily be changed within preferences, but for me I always prefer to have the system tray icon for IM programs.
Those are the defaults used by Pidgin itself... so those are the defaults used by Pidgin Portable. Personally, I put it in my system tray and dock it to the right side of the window.

Just wanted to make sure it wasn't something specific to my install.
IRC Setup
Other messenger protocols are listed there as well.

I've been using this program for quire some time now and everythings looks good although i get this error when ctrl+v on a message that i want to paste on the message box. Saying program encountered an error and needs to close then i will have to click Dont send then the whole program crashes. Using a Dell Desktop Computer running microsoft windows xp sp2.
Same error with XP SP2. Needs to be reported upstream.
I run XP Pro with SP2 and can't reproduce this issue.

You sure you have the right version of GTK on there?
Also, does REGULAR (non-portable) Pidgin work right?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
REGULAR (non-portable) Pidgin don't work right too. same problem.
In that case, it's a Pidgin or GTK issue and not something I can really help with.
Are you sure you uninstalled both Pidgin and GTK (the local ones) and then downloaded the current Pidgin 2.1.0 release from their site? If so and it shows up like that, it's a Pidgin or GTK bug or an issue on your system and beyond my ability to help.

I discovered something strange, which is 100% reproducible in this portable windows version, but not on my Linux setup (also 2.1.0):
1 Don't save the account password
2 Set in the preferences the "Status at Startup" to offline
3 Exit pidgin with a non offline status
4 start it up
5 PidGin asks for a password, goes online and shows your buddys (and you as online to them), but states its offline (the whole point is the bug (actually 2), it should do *nothing*)
BUT this works:
1,2 see above
3 Exit pidgin with offline status
4 start it up
5 PidGin don't ask for a password, it doesn't do anything
6 set your status to some thing non offline
7 It asks for the password and does what it should...
I may test it with the normal version soon, but for now I have no time for it
EDIT: I'am sorry its a pidgin bug... I will report it at there site.
Keep up the good work

Downloaded it and worked great. Logged into both of my account (AIM and MSN) and even had a little chat before closing.
Excellent work as always.
I have been running this since you released it with no problems on Windows Professional 64-bit and Windows XP SP2.
Works like a champ. I renamed
\PortableApps\PidginPortable
to
\PortableApps\PidginPortable000
Then I installed this new version, and copied my gtkrc file from
\PortableApps\PidginPortable000\App\GTK\etc\gtk-2.0
to
\PortableApps\PidginPortable\App\GTK\etc\gtk-2.0,
and my fave theme, BlueHeart, from
\PortableApps\PidginPortable000\App\GTK\share\themes
to
\PortableApps\PidginPortable\App\GTK\share\themes.
Copied my logged chats over too but I will spare you the nasty long pathnames for THOSE.
Anyway - no troubles.
I know this was brought up before this thread was cleaned/updated for the new version. I have tried to install guifications plugin in pidgin as that's the ONLY feature that I miss not having from other IM clients. I download the EXE from their website and it says that it can't find any installations. I can also download the Zip file, and tried to put the files in the right directory, but I am unable to get it to show in my plugins list.
Maybe I'm not doing something right? Can anyone shed some light?
Their installer only works with local Pidgin. Just grab the zip file (pidgin-guifications-2.14.zip) and unzip it to PidginPortable\App\Pidgin

I have extracted it to the Pidgin folder. We will see how it works. Thanks John!
Guifications seems to be working pretty well. I now get a crash on exit...I think it's related to the guifications plugin, but the last few times I've had this issue all I had to do was copy my GTK files from my local install to my GTK folder on my USB drive per the Pidgin Portable instructions on their website. Maybe that's all it is again.
Having an issue moving groups around inside the list. First version I've had that with. Anyone else seeing that. Basically, I'm trying to drag and drop to alphabetize the groups.
Its a pidgin bug/normal and wanted behavior of version 2.1.0
You have to edit your config to change the ordering.. same on Linux/normal windows version

Good to know. Thanks for the heads up.
Standard Portable Pidgin install-no additional plugins. Running on XP Home/Pro boxes. AIM, MSN and Google (Jabber) working perfectly with no problems that I can see.
App works great on all PCs; XP home/pro admin account, XP home limited account.

pidgin is great, loads very fast compared to trillian(ughh...). but the bad thing is that passwords are stored in plain text! wdheck!

Then don't store your passwords!
Or use KeePass...
lolz, yeh they do store ur password if you check "remember password" or somthing. if i use an instant messenger on a computer that's other than mine i wouldn't want to type my password as sometimes there could be keyloggers or somthing. i'm still using trillian even though it's slow but at lease the password are encrypted, even though the encryption is weak but it's still better then nothing. and yes i do use KeePass, but it's very inconvenient having to open keepass, loading db etc.. when you can just click connect on trillian. i'm not saying that Pidgin is a badly designed program; it's great, but it does hav a down side.
