I've just posted a beta of PNotes Portable (as originally discussed here). PNotes is a sticky note utility that allows you to post sticky notes on your screen. It has multiple display options as well as a handy feature to schedule notes to pop up. It's small (under 1MB) and works well on Windows 2000 and up. Please give it a try and post your feedback.
PNotes Portable 1.0.1 Pre-Release 4
PNotes Portable 2.0.0.2 Pre-Release 1
(may take a few minutes to hit the download servers)
Please post any feedback.
UPDATE 2.0.0.2: I've added a pre-release of 2.0.0.2 which may or may not be a stable release. It adds in additional translations and improved scheduling and date handling.
UPDATES FROM PR3: New executable from author to fix help file issue. German language file added.
[to the author]
I have been using this app since it's first day of release and love it.
It occurred to me yesterday that I needed to be reminded to check on something very frequently while I was online.
If it's not too much trouble could the schedule have the option for a set amount of time, e.g. every "X" number of minutes.
This would be good for helping to do things you might have to do many times in a day.
Didn't think this app was going to be so popular, did you

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
You are not the first - I've got some mails with the same suggestion. To all appearances I have no choice, just add this feature. I'm currently working on the next release, hope it will be ready in a couple of days.
As for popularity - I just wanted to write something in pure C and Win32 API, nothing more I really didn't think about thousands downloads. But now I fill I've taken upon my shoulders a big responsibility
It's not even released yet
That said, are you comfortable with me releasing this as a 1.0.1 final release?
Also, please increment version number in further updates so we don't mix things up
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I meant my internal release :), let's call it "version"
I am absolutely comfortable with final release of 1.0.1, the next version will be compatible with current one, except one thing - because I threw out the language icons, there is no need for langs.icons file in the next version.
I'll have the installer remove it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Seems to work great, as all your apps do!

Hi all!
New version (2.0.0) of PNotes is ready for testing.
http://lamer.byethost32.com/files/PNotes_2_0_0b.zip
(for some mistery reason thi direct link does not work - please, copy and paste the link above)
What's new:
1. Added support for hot keys (Preferences->Misc)
2. Added ability for switching sound alarm on/off (Preferences->Schedule)
3. Added ability for adding custom sounds (Preferences->Schedule)
4. Added support for custom date/time formats (Preferences->Schedule)
5. Added new "pester" schedule type which will alarm you
every [hours]:[minutes]:[seconds] (Note->Adjust->Schedule)
6. Added partial command-line support (for closing only) -[x][s][n]
x - will close currently running instance of PNotes
s - will close without any prompting and save unsaved notes if the
appropriate options is checked
n - will close without saving
All comments and bug reports are strongly welcome!
Good stuff Mr Lamer!
I overwrote the PR4 files with this version to give it a try. Everything seemed to work OK.
My only feedback to you would be to consider changing something on Preferences --> Appearance. Experienced computer uses understand what the ellipsis on the button for changing the font means. Beginners (and the like) won't know that button will change the font (they may figure it out, but it's not obvious). If you could change the button text from an ellipsis to say "Change" or use a label next to the button stating "Change font" or something like that. I'll leave it up to you (of course ).

Quick note: Help file does not seem to work from system tray or Control Panel.
Changes look good so far
[11:55am, follow up: What are the rules for hot keys. I wanted to use F12 and it would not work. Does it have to be [control] or [alt] something. I like one stroke hot key if possible. Not a biggy though as I know nothing about the rules for assigning hot keys and it may not be allowed]

Currently the hot keys should include either Ctrl, or Shift, or Alt, or Win, or any combination of these keys + any other letter, or function key, or PgUp, PgDown, Space etc.
I did not include the help file within archive - IAE it should be changed.
BTW - the language files in archive are from the previous version too, except english, russian and hebrew.
First, the program works well and I really like the additions. They dont make the program heavier/bigger, they just add more functionality.
Its all easily accessible without any need for further explanations.
And its fully portable just out the box!
Why aren't there more programs like that???

Just downloaded and trying it out for the first time (excuse me if I mention something that's been said before).
When saved, note name has the text "HH:mm" within it... looks odd and unecessary.
It looks like the name date format is using the System Long date format, if so it would be nice if one could optionally use the Short date format. (I have this set to YYYY-MM-DD, the international date format, see http://www.saqqara.demon.co.uk/datefmt.htm and http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/iso-time.html).
If PNotes isn't using the System date format perhaps you might consider using it or allowing the user to set their prefered date format for note names.
When ALT-TABing around the running Windows Apps there is no text displayed for PNotes and it's icon is a simple window, it would be nice if it was a mini PNote in the chosen style!
See Preferences --> Schedule to set the date format to pretty much whatever you want.
Cancer Survivors -- Remember the fight, celebrate the victory!

I assumed that was for scheduling which I wouldn't use.
Further to my post above, which I can't edit because BuddhaChu replied, I downloaded 1.0.1.0 and find that it's default date naming differs from 2.0.0.0. For me 1.0.1.0 is naming my prefered way: YYYY-MM-DD which is my System short date format.
I would be grateful if lamer, the author, would explain how his note date naming code is written.
I guess to be truly portable it shouldn't use the Sytsem date format but allow the user to specify what he wants.
under Prefs ->schedule.

Hi!
I saw, there was a small bug in date formatting - I fixed it (I hope) and will upload new version tomorrow (I am at work now and I just cannot do it from here).
The default date format will remain dd MMM yyyy - just because it's my preferred format Obviously I won't get it from system because of portability. But you always will be able to change it from Preferences->Schedule, and this format (from Preferences->Schedule) will be used as default new note name as well. I still beleive that it is better, than "New note" or "Untitled". You always can "Save As...". The icon and caption will appear on Alt-Tab.
Regards
Hi lamer,
The default date format will remain dd MMM yyyy - just because it's my preferred format
It was mine too for many years, because of it's clarity and unambiguousness(sp?), until I was converted to the advantages of the ISO date format... did you have a peep at the web pages in the links in https://portableapps.com/node/8511#comment-45523 and the eleven good reasons to use it?
and this format (from Preferences->Schedule) will be used as default new note name as well
This isn't obvious to new users of your program, you might like to consider that it would be clearer if Date/Time formats were own their tab or at least say "For single alarm and new note name".
Cheers, Roger
at least say "For single alarm and new note name".
That's exactly the way I think to do that
I work with SQL server and the format "dd MMM yyyy" is the only safe and unambiguousness format, each other can cause problems.
Ah, good old Microsoft dictating again. YYYY-MM-DD isn't ambiguous.
I use YYYY-MM-DD to label everything. Makes sorting files much easier. Plus its easier to find what you are looking for. Doing it the other way leads to tons of confusion and it takes forever to find the files you are looking for.

I just updated to this latest version, and on installing deleted all my settings and notes... ¬¬
And I forgot this time to make a BackUp...
EDIT: I was using John's PNotes portable, with the new release of Lamer's PNotes (that is portable already) I just copied into the App folder of John's... I don't know why but the copy deleted the ini and pmdb files that contains my settings and notes... :s
I reinstalled John's PNotes Portable.
Then, on IRC somebody talked about Recuva, and I remember that I have Pandora Recovery on my PDrive... tried it but it failed (can't recover from removable drives), then I downloaded and tried Recuva... after a few tests I managed to recover mi original ini and pmdb files...
BTW, John, I discovered that your release don't have the spanish.lng file that comes in the original PNotes.

... I can't get PNotes 2.0.0.0 to accept the ISO date-time settings. I'm probably not using the right case on the format codes, but I keep getting the dreaded "The date format is invalid...." stop-everything dialog.
Could someone please reply with the *correct* formatting? Thanks in advance.

Is this a stable release? All translations updated, etc?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I decided to post a package of 2.0.0.2 to have people test.
Let's get a stable final version and do a release.
It's best not to update apps more than once every month or two... at least 'final' releases. Having betas or alphas in between is good. But more than that is too much for people to keep up with.
Also, a suggestion on version numbering. It's usually major version, minor version and then bug fix version in terms of most apps. So 2.0 would be a major release. 2.1 would be a minor update with improved functionality, etc. And 2.1.1 would be a bug fix on 2.1. The 4th version number is usually just used for build tracking (for example, I have Delphi auto-increment it for each successive build of the PortableApps.com Menu). This is artificially incremented to release-version.0 when the actual stable release is made. A few apps break this pattern (like the Mozilla apps).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
thanks for the package.
Look ok. I will post again after a day of using it...
but the Launcher has still the old version number.

Hi!
I asked people who made the previous translations to supplement them. It was 5 - 6 hours ago. I already got Portuguese(br) changes. I hope that I'll get the rest today.
BTW, John, I'll send you the changes in hope you'll supplement the German ranslation.

I've been using it and it seems to be working good.
Looking forward to the official release.
Hi all!
The guy who made Spanish translation for previous version of PNotes was silent since I asked him to supplement the translation for new version (well, it's summer now, may be he is on vacation). I beleive there are some Spaniards here on forum. Would you be so kind to help me to finish the job? Below is the list of values to translate. I don't want to publish the program with uncompleted translation. Please, store it as Unicode.
BTW, John, the German translation is uncompleted too
Thank you in advance.
I didn't do the German translation. I just posted it as a .lng file for people.

But its hard without context...

Two questions:
1- You mention Spaniards, does that mean you want Es_es not Es_mx or ES_ar? Where you just generalizing?
2- How do you save in unicode? I've herd the term before, but never quite understood what it ment. BTW, I use Notepad++, so maybe you can tell me how to store it in unicode using that.

1. To be honest - I have no idea. I don't know wat Spanish is used in the current translation. Can you cast a glance on it, please?
2. If you put the translation here as a part of reply - there is no problem with Unicode. But if you save it as file and then give the link to it, just "Save As..." and choose All Files in "Save As Type" combobox and Unicode in "Encoding" combobox. It's about simple Notepad, but I think any self-respecting text editor has this option.
Well lamer, there are 22 countries at least that speak Spanish and everyone of them have their own version, but the basic I have seen on software are Spain Spanish (es_ES) and "Latin American Spanish (es_LA) /or Mexican Spanish (es_MX) and Argentinean Spanish (es_AR)...
Being a Venezuelan myself, I don't like the second kind of distribution (es_ES, es_MX & es_AR) but I can accept the es_ES and es_LA versions...
And here you have, your basic Spanish translation...

Well, I beleive that now it's really final and stable.
Yesterday, while testing WinMerge, I noticed that it left some traces in registry. I decided to check the PNotes again and... oh, damn! Because I added ability to add custom sounds (which opens OpenFile dialog) and preview these sounds - two traces left in registry. I hate it! But now, after I added two cleaning functions more, all is clean as arctic ice.

I increased build number, hope this time did it right After all the main version is still 2.0.0.
P.S.
Spaniards, I need the translation badly!
Please!
Lamer,
Could you please tell us where the two traces left in registry are so we can remove them.
Will the new version detect these setting on first run and delete them?

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
The first one was in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
(after closing app from command line)
and the second one was in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.wav
(after manipulation with sounds)
But both should became clean after you run and close the new version.
I'm not sure the ...\MUICache is really a problem
I don't know about ...\FileExts\... what does it do?.
If this relates to your other post, which I will now call the "supercleaner" post, I would ask you to proceed with caution. It seems that you are attempting to be even more "portable" than John !!!
If this is an attempt to clean up the "trace" usage elements that many, if not all apps leave behind I would ask you not to go into "over kill" mode. The "traces" are not really personal data and I'm not worried about them.
Since John has not attempted to do this with the other apps here I have two concerns.
1. Will it bloat the code?
2. Are there risks involved in doing a "superclean"?
e.g does it increase the risk deleting somethings that were not intended?
There are some people who want PortableApps to operate in "stealth mode".
This is not a concern for me. The owner of the computer might have a right to know what software was used on their computer, just not my personal data.
That being said, if you really want to go for "stealth" and "superclean" don't forget the \Windows\Prefetch\ directory
Keep up the good work,
and as I've suggested before,
Keep it Simple.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Hi!
1. Will it bloat the code?
Absolutely not.
2. Are there risks involved in doing a "superclean"?
e.g does it increase the risk deleting somethings that were not intended?
IMHO absolutely not as well. In fact, all we are doing can damage the computer, even the simplest "Hello, World!" But in this case only records that explicitly include the program name (i.e. “PNotes.exe”) would be deleted. Obviously, there is always 0.0001% of possibility that somebody has created before "SuperPNotes.exe" :).
3. It seems that you are attempting to be even more "portable" than John !!!
Definitely not! :). No, I just want this little program will be as much more portable, as possible.
4. The "traces" are not really personal data and I'm not worried about them.
They are! At my work place, for example, it’s strongly prohibited even to plug any USB drive to workstation – because of security issues. If I want to use USB drive I should make an official request and get a special drive (at another building at all) :). So I’m really “stealth maniac”.
5. For my shame I did not find the “Windows\Prefetch” :). It seems I haven’t it at all, not at work, not at home (I’m under XP SP2, and I know it should be, but it’s missing…).
6. The owner of the computer might have a right to know what software was used on their computer
Definitely yes! But from myself, not from checking registry or other places ;). In any case, I’ll try to avoid of using somebody’s computer without its owner.
Lamar,
Thanks for the reply.

WinXP SP2 and no "c:\windows\prefetch" on a home machine?
Strange, very strange ?!?
I think the user would have to be an administrator to delete files there anyway. Will the other "superclean" operations work for a limited user or do they require admin privileges [an important factor for PAs]
Tim
(\__/)(='.'=)(}>
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Yes, I've found it at home (the previous post was written at 8.30 in the morning, before the first working day of the week, so you understand...:)). Let me add a "very restricted" user and check what happens.
Tim, thank you for push.
No, there is no problem for limited user to clean registry from code. Just while testing I noticed that I used function which is case sensitive, so string as "pnotes.exe" remained uncleaned. I've changed the function to case insensitive and now everything is OK - the registry is clean even for limited user.
http://lamer.byethost32.com/files/PNotes_2_0_0_4.zip
As for Prefetch, I'll try it tomorrow, it's almost midnight...:)
Thank you again.
If you delete stuff from the Prefetch directory, people will kill you
It will slow down program launch.
Anyway, all these are unnecessary. It happens with every program and on some systems it may not work due to permissions (think group policies).

Ryan,
Concerning Prefetch data and slowing down apps:
This would only be the case of a PA running from a stable location on the hard drive.
When used on removable media the files would not be optimized by the use of the prefetch data as they would not be there.
i.e. Windows cannot optimize the location of a program located on x:\path\path\ if is not connected to the system.
Also I don't think that it would even attempt to optimize a "flash" type drive in the first place [I'm not sure about a removable hard drive, it would depend on how it recognize it]
Tim
(\__/)(='.'=)(}>
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Well, there is no problem to clean Prefetch (not all stuff, just what we need :)). Obviously not under limited user. BTW Windows writes data to Prefetch even the app is running from USB drive.
But anyway, you persuadeed me not to get mixed up with prefetch. If so experienced in portable apps people say me that it doesn't matter much - ok, we are finished. At least registry is clean.
Well, I've just uploaded PNotes 2.0.0 on my site, include the last Spanish supplements of Aciago - hope this is really final.

The stable release works except an ugly pink box is surrounding the notes.
Same thing with the unstable release, also with the unstable I think it writes 2 the Wine registry.

As all of ya should know Micro$oft is the Evil Empire, and Windows (a.k.a. Winblows or Windoze) is their greatest general, so please make a difference and install Linux or FreeBSD on yer Windows comp.

I used this (http://lamer.byethost32.com/files/PNotesRelease.zip) version hoping its the latest.
I just copied the whole thing to /App/Pnotes and it worked without leaving a trace (well... it left some but we cant do anything about them).
One thing:
If I right-click on the tray icon, after 2 values (show all and hide all), there are little square boxes. Like the ones I see if I want to use japanese in a text and japanese isn't installed on my system. It doesn't matter which language I use, they are always there.
I think you can do something about them, can you?
And BTW:
If I google Pnotes and lamer, the portableApps.com thread shows up 5 hits earlier than your page...

1. Simeon, I cannot reproduce these squares on any of available computer (I used four).
I understand what you mean - it looks like attempt to output a non-printable character. Am I right?
May be anybody else has encountered this effect? I've never seen it.
What Windows are you running?
2. What traces does it leave?
3. Yes, I've found "lamer" and "PNotes" at the end of search results in Google - the very first time I've found it But one of sites is called "The best freeware on the planet! " It's bold - to call the site so
I never responded...

XP SP2 German Home here (on three machines). Can't reproduce those (maybe UTF) little square boxes in any language.

Yes, this is prefetch. Some posts above we decided not to clean it, although there is no problem for this. Limited user cannot do that.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software.LOG
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system.LOG
Hmmm, I cannot open these files in explorer ever. It seems like system itself writes there every time. Any way, the most common registry locations are clean (the text search does not find any "PNotes" except "PNOTESPORTABLE.EXE", but this is not my trace :))
Hi!
What ever happens?
Does anybody still test it or it's so perfect that there is nothing to say?
BTW, since august 20 version 2.0.0 appears on my site as release.
Regards.
What should we say? We all have tested it and it works. Just release it!
Maybe some users want some more bells and whistles, some other users may want some more or fancier skins. But that's not what the beta thread is for. Is it?
ZAP
Well, so 2.0.0 is considered as release
Use it normally without problems... nothing to say...
But yes, I want more skins...
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
Sweet little app. It's exactly what I've been looking for.
Is it possible to include a "no-skin" option under the preferences? I am looking for something more minimalistic, i.e. TomBoy like or the MacOS Stickies.
Cheers.
