I haven't been able to get gimp 2.2 to start at all.
After installation, when I try to start it, I get an Application Error window that says
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application.
This is the same on both my Win XP and Vista machines.
you tried re-downloading it, it sounds like something got corrupted somewhere.

I experienced the same problem on WinXP SP2.
FYI, I've checked the md5sum and it's the same as mentioned in GIMP download page means my download is OK.
Any clue of this?

I think the problem is similar with Pidgin issue about "error while loading pidgin.dll". A solution I took to make Pidgin work properly is in https://portableapps.com/node/8808#comment-47548.
For GIMP Portable developer team should refer to above URL to find out what was wrong.
The GIMP Portable installation is running properly if there is no GTK installed locally. In my previous case, there is a GTK installed locally. Once again, the solution for the Pidgin portable described in above URL made it work properly even there is GTK installed locally.

I got the same failure in WinXP Prof. SP2 as a normal, restricted windows user after the following message: "Some files (xmlparse.dll, xmltok.dll) were found on this PC that are incompatible with GIMP Portable. Would you like to temporarilly disable these files while GIMP Portable is running?"
When pressing "Yes" the initialization failure message appeared and the program aborted.
As an administrator the program was running after confirming the above first message with "Yes"! That is naturally no way to run the program on an unknown PC - what can I do in such cases?

The xmlparse and xmltok on the PC are incompatible with GIMP. You don't have permission to remove them temporarily. So, you can't use GIMP Portable. Period.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Gimp worked fine for me on W2k, but now on XP Pro SP2 getting initialization failed, and the error code is 0xc0000005. I'm logged under admin rights... I notice the error always pops up when the splash screen get stucks on loading data files on the fonts.
