Request for an application to open and modify Autocad files. Does anyone know of a free open source application that will do this and also made portable?

Qcad seems to be the alternative best, It offers the source, but not of the latest program. You can download a demo to try it out. I don't know about you, but after many many many years of using Autocad, it's going to be hard to start all over with something else. Also, check this out for other alternatives.

Thanks for the input. I'm not a heavy autocad user. I have some autocad drawings from a previous employee and some that get occasionally emailed to me that I would like to edit. I would prefer a portable app that would open, edit and/or convert these cad drawings. Also the ability to save a new drawing in a autocad format so people using autocad can open. A Portable CAD application I think would be popular. Thanks for the alternatives, I'll check them out.
I didn't see it in the list of alternatives, and I know it has a for non-commercial, personal use license, but I have found this to be powerful and easy to use. http://www.progecad.com/. It is based on IntelliCAD. I have not tried it portable, but am going to once I've read the licensing and can get my hands on the 2007 edition. If it works, I will post here. I am new to this forum and know that this has been mentioned before on node 1238, but thought I would throw this out there. Have fun.

Thanks, but I don't think it would be acceptible to be made portable because of the license.
I too may look at purchasing the full 2007 version if it is price friendly.
I'll keep an eye on ProgeCad, see if it's "good enough". I've heard that IntelliCad is THE best alternative to Autocad, but not free. But if they are making a freeware version of it, it might be worth trying it out. Thanks for the link.

I remember reading somewhere recently that Cad Standard Lite is already portable. (UniExtract, cleanup, copy & run) The problem is I can't remember where I read the article, and I can't seem to find it again.
Edit: It is in Wikipedia's portable software list. Maybe that's where I saw it.

Oh yes, I know it is free and of everyones free time. Not the point...
The features on the free version are very limited, there's lots of commands that I often use that are not available on the free version.

I've tried a few programs, but none of them seems to be very portable. Was curious if CadStd Pro was portable or not. Even though it is not free, it is relatively inexpensive ($30 UD) compared to other software suites.

Is QCad able to run portable? I know it is open source etc..but not sure about registry keys etc.. has anyone done it or know how to tell me to do it?
I have an occasional need for a really simple CAD progrm to deal with .dxf files and a portable version of QCad would do me very nicely..we use ACAD 2007 which does NOT like .dxf for some unknown reason..

Autocad requires a fixed directory. It attempts to locate a dll with a hard wired call directory. Other things about Autodesk lead me to want to give a "Don't Mess wid it" label.
Qcad is avaible and will run in the DamnSmall Linux environment. Look in the "my DSL" repositories for it. Its tricky, but worth it (I think, I just got my DSL setup on a flash tonight, which was very easy.) It does not have 3d capabilities, but does have the COMMAND LINE! (Most of today's cad software doesn't utilize a command line, a function I miss and dearly love.)
