A more Different mplayer portable app

It is really cool that a mplayer portable app was created but I am not really a big fan of mpui, I was hoping that a brand new version of mplayer could be created and of course portably.

GUI

Unfortunately, MPlayer's default GUI, although skinnable, is really buggy (and was discontinued). And they haven't put out a 'stable' release in almost a year. (And regular users should absolutely NOT be using 'nightly builds').

I was thinking about using SMPlayer as they seem to be updating rather well, etc. Thoughts?

SMplayer looks great.

SMplayer looks great. haven't done a lot of testing, but it seems more intuitive to use than MPUI and less buggy as well.

Agreed

Even if it works as well as the MPUI, it would be great because it has such an amazing and easy to use GUI. I haven't tried it yet, but I will. I'll post back later.

Wow, I just noticed I still had a signature, that's enough of that.

I like the idea

I like the idea of SMPlayer. I haven't really used it yet, but the interface looks clean, and if it can do what it claims it can it should make a good player.

You've got my support on Smplayer

"I was thinking about using SMPlayer as they seem to be updating rather well, etc. Thoughts?"

Awesome idea!

I use your Firefox and GIMP portable apps, getting a portable Smplayer would be a indispensable addition.

Why? Among many other reasons:

- VLC has issues with Soft-subs, so people who need that functionality would be set
- Smplayer has a very clever language menu, that's always accessible for Audio and Subtitle switching. Two clicks and you've switched your languages. Light years faster then any other app I've worked with.

I did...

I did some testing and never really found anything except in the AppData Directory

Actually I'm not a big fan

Actually I'm not a big fan of videolan or smplayer. I would like to see a new version of mplayer with full support for dvds/vcds/svcds/ and their menus controls and music visualizations, choose you own gui, and updated video playback. Portable of course.

uhmmmmmmm

This is what I read and understand on the mplayer website.
Mplayer will not support dvd menus as it will take a complete rewrite of mplayer, something that they don't want to do but they will welcome some developers who have the time to rewrite mplayer to support this.

So as for mplayer and dvd menu support good luck on that. I mean mplayer will play dvd movies but it will support the menus at all. So if you want to have dvd menu support use VLC for that. Other than that Sorry but I'll keep an eye out for some alternatives.

Ain't Happening

That ain't happening:

1. MPlayer has dropped GUI support (the whole skin support thing that is listed on their site that was always buggy), so it is up to 3rd parties to build GUIs. Third parties like SMPlayer, MPUI, etc. Each of these GUIs is a separate application that is made portable in totally different ways. So, we'll pick one GUI and portablize that... if we can find a solid one that's supported on an ongoing basis.

2. MPlayer hasn't released a stable build in a year (since 1.0 RC1), so no one is really sure what to base builds on

3. As thibeaz said, MPlayer doesn't support DVD menus. Period. You want DVD menus... you have to use something other than MPlayer.
