Rescue Dead Laptop

I had a hard disk go bad on my laptop and thought the whole thing was toast. But I discovered the BartPE bootable windows CD (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder), and further discovered that PortableApps work just fine on it. Computer rescued. Actually I can still use the old hard disk to retrieve files, since it still hasn't fully crashed yet; it's just not up to the load of running windows.

Any other similar experiences?

Uh Huh...

I'm guessing you're gonna bring back all your lost documents, now?
I'd want to try it, but my laptop's Bios is locked down.

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

Locked down?

Is it actually password protected, or does it just skip the screen that allows you to get into it?

If it's the former, you might be screwed (on a desktop, I'd reset the jumper on the MB to clear the PW, but I'm not sure how to do it on a laptop).

If it's the latter, it could just be that the BIOS is set with a quick bootup. Google your laptop model, and figure out which key activates the BIOS setup screen. Once you know that, you can just hit the key repetitively during bootup, it should get you into the BIOS. Once there, you can set the bootup to full, which will give you the memory check and time to enter the BIOS in the future.

Some models also have a designated F key that you can use to boot from alternate disks, too.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
