=========================
I finally completed my first App.
Its AssaultCube, a "free first-person-shooter based on the game Cube. Set in a realistic looking environment, as far as that´s possible with this engine, while gameplay stays fast and arcade. This game is all about team oriented multiplayer fun."
I checked the multi player mode and its portable too.
The official website is http://assault.cubers.net/
Its 17mb packed and 25.8mb installed.
I tried upx-ing it but it only saved me 1 mb and the game wouldn't run afterwards so I thought I better leave it the way it is.
Download
MD5 (for the geeks:) ec8a6214b480a9934eb3d4aacc2a23d7
I hope you like it and give me some feedback.
TODO
- Link AppInfo.ini Homepage to www.PortableApps.com/DevelopmentTest
- Currently the Source is included because it is included in the standard App. But maybe its better to make a separate package because that will save us about 3Mb.
- I included a license agreement. I think the license is kinda wired. Maybe someone who knows more about that can check it out?
- Copy files with SILENT switch
- Does it work on Windows 2000?.
I forgot to credit Aciago for suggesting it
And thanks Patrick for the hosting!
When I click the Download button, I get to a MEGA blah blah page, and I didn't see any link to the game. There are the titles of where I would guess I would click to download, but those weren't links.
Do I click on the MEGA manager?
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
For some weird reason the don't let anyone download this at the moment.
To answer your question:
No.Normally you type in 3 letters, wait 45 sec and download the file...
Ill reupload it to some place else.

I found the post... It was moved far away from "recent" since I took three days at the hospital and couldn't check the forum... but I'm downloading now... I'll test tonight and report...
Did I said thanks?
Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks...
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
I can't say if something was left behind because the game is already installed on this PC, but I ran the installer and played a little...
1) make the launcher create the folder AssaultCube Portable no matter what... I changed the directory to my testing folder and then it just copied the App and Data folders and the ACP.exe file there... other Apps create their own folder even if you change the location.
2) I used a LapTop Acer Aspire 9300, with AMD Athlon64x2 at 1.7 GHz with 2GB RAM and Windows Vista Home Premium, and the game ran better and faster (even loaded faster, and looks nicer) than the installed version and the zip version copied on my PDrive.
3) When I finished the first game I quited, deleted the other folder and the AppInfo folder, then run it again, and then I had to ctrl+alt+del to kill a DOS Window and start all over again (without recreating the folders) maybe I just launched the game too fast and the old game was still running the launcher... I don't know.
4) When I ran the launcher for the second time, the game didn't have my username, weapon, skin, etc. I mean, it doesn't remember my settings.
But it's ok, the best part is point 2)...
Tomorrow I'll test on a Windows XP machine... for now, I'll continue playing...

1) I don't get your point. Do you mean the Launcher or the Installer? Could you tell me what "other App" you mean so I can check its sourcecode?
2) Cool!
3)The dos window is the bat launcher AssaultCube uses.I didn't yet try to replace it with NSIS commands so you have a dos window running as long as you play.
4)Did you waited long enough for it to close?
What machine did you try it? Win2000?
I only tried in with XP...

1) I meant other Apps in PAF format, if you "explore" and change the installing folder, those Apps automatically create a new folder with the name of the App you're installing... AC don't do that, I changed the installing directory and then the installer just unziped the files in that directory without organizing it in it own subfolder.
3) Yes, I know is the bat file, the problem is that the bat file froze (I'm not sure about that word in English, I want to mean "Freeze" in past tense).
4) Now that you ask... I just killed the process I found on ctrl+alt+del because the bat was frozen, maybe was that... I'll try it again.
I tried on Vista Home Premium... and today I'm going to try on XP.

- download
- install
- start
- get some messages -> driver not supported (nvidia driver for 8800gts) but everything looks alright
- test single player mode
great job *thumbsup*
if you need another mirror -> contact via my homepage
Patrick is hosting it for me so I think thats ok for now.
Does anyone know how to play online?
I´d like to test the "online game portability"

i just tested it ... looks alright ... i felt a litlle like cannonfodder *ggg*
I only have XP so it would be really cool if someone could try this App on Win2000 or Vista.
Thanks.

I must have overlooked that and your 2nd post. Sorry.
And froze IS freeze in past tense
I hope I get the directory thing fixed in the second edition!

You see? this is a forum so good, but so good, that I even learn English... ...Weel, at least it's usefull for practice...
Well, to the point, I´m in a different PC ATM, this one is an old IBM NetVista PIII 750MGHz 256Mb RAM, and no Video Aceleration installed... runing Windows XP SP2 fully updated.
A little bit slowly, of course, but the game ran, and ran fine.
Nothing left behind.
So the only stuf to report is the fact that it doesn´t store the settings, but you already know that...
And, it´s stupid, I know, but... the icon doesn´t look very nice...
When I was trying to make my launcher (that I never did because I´m an idiot in programing) I used this (just googling for AssaultCube on images, don't know if it's legal) as icon and this one in the splash screen... The splash screen was just a copy/paste of one made by NeoRame...
And if you find more typos on this post than in the past is because here I´m using M$ IE5 and don't have the Firefox's spell corrector, so apologize my English on this one...
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
And I know about that, Im learning english here too
Weird is that I installed it locally and it doesnt seem to keep the settings either. I change my name, the scenery and the game layout - restart the whole thing - and I am back in the same standard map without my new name
Maybe its an error in the game...?
Ill see if Assaultcubes Forums have some infos about that.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I installed Assault Cube on my FlashDrive and played it on both my laptop (Dual Core Lenovo, 1 Gig Ram, XP SP2) and my Desktop (Homebuilt, Intel Motherboard, 3.4 GHz Pentium, 3 Gig Ram). The game ran fine on both machines when I tried it in single player mode.
Good "walk-through" before you start a game so you can see about picking things up. I was killed pretty quickly in both tries but hey..that's me and not the game.
Nothing seems to have been written to the hard drives after exit so so far I haven't found a problem.
Could you change some settings (like the scenery or weapons) and check whether your changes get remembered?
Aciago said he had problems there and it seems to me that it doesnt copy the settings back after you finished the program.
Ill look into it this weekend.
And I tried the server games and its portable too.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
windows xp german
change weapon name and crosshair -> quit game -> start game again -> default weapon name and crosshair
I played with it myself, realised that and took a good look at the launcher source code. I set the wrong folder so it cant copy the settings
I´ll do a new version in the next days.

Simeon:
I'll try it at home tonight (I'm in Chicago, USA). There seems to be some objection by my company management to us running games on company machines.
that the bug of not saving settings is in the installed version, so is not a problem with the portable one...
The beta is fine, just need new nice icons and splash screen...
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
I found the same one but its good to have confirmation.
Its just weird that there is nothing about that on the forums...
So I can leave the code for copying settings back and forth
The splash screen is up to John. And maybe our "Art Department" could come up with a nice Icon if I don't find a good one?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Here's the changes add additions that will help AssaultCube Portable come closer to an official release:
!define LICENCEAGREEMENT
in the installer source and remove eula.rtf from the source directory unless there's a specific reason you need it.Your and Ryan's copyright's go below John's in the Readme.txt, and I believe Ryan's is 2007-2008.
John's added some new strings in the latest KeePass / Sumatra release, add those, the line for the icon (you'll have two now) I think you'll need to add to include MUI.nsh, also add the ;=== Best Compression stuff from the KeePass, Sumatra launcher.
!define NAME "AssaultCubePortable"
!define FULLNAME "AssaultCube Portable"
!define APP "AssaultCube"
Should be changed to:
!define PORTABLEAPPNAME "AssaultCube Portable"
!define NAME "AssaultCubePortable"
!define APPNAME "AssaultCube"
And update the rest of the source to those variables accordingly.
Good job, you get a cookie! You kept up to date on quite a bit.
Oh, the game works nice too, I wasn't able to check the registry, but that's what you do.
for your input.
I don't have time to work on it this week but maybe next weekend.
I'll see about the icon. I hope I find one because I really have no Idea how to do/modify them
Most of the stuff is a little tricky to figure out by yourself so I am glad a mod told how things should be. One more thing: What is the meaning of the [License] tag entries in the appinfo.ini?
I just leave the all "true" but I have no idea why.
And how do you know about my copyright history???
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Well, I just leave them as true too.
Granted it's open source, and under most licenses can be used for commercial use and is obviously shareable. Also, if it's open source it's really freeware as well.
that you had the same problem with your settings not being saved between launches?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
if you want i can work on the icon for you
and as a suggestion why don't you use rename rather than copyfiles
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
I would be very thankful if you could work on an icon!
I know some launchers use rename and some use copyfiles. AFAIK there is no difference between rename and copyfiles /SILENT - rename is just shorter to write

Yessers.
the weird thing about this is that i don't find any reference to this on their forums. And I think there must be someone complaining about it.
Anyhow, it makes the launcher much simpler Or would you leave the "copy-back-n-forth-code" in the launcher just in case?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Specially if there's a fix, it makes it easier.
(or comment it out ; )
I'm just working my way through your "todo-list"
I'll email it to you when I'm done so you can upload it.

currently i use execwait.
Does Execshell "wait"?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
it doesn't.
so is there another way to have the cmd window stay hidden? Because I need it to "wait".
Or can I use NSIS to check whether its running and thus use it without "wait"?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
guess that there are a couple of options, you could change the NSIS source so that it uses that flag, or you could just use the process plugin to check if it is still running and stick it in a loop, I've got sone example code some where if you want it.
I just tried it and it wouldn't launch.
My code is:
SetOutPath "$PROGRAMDIRECTORY\"
ExecShell "open" "$EXECSTRING -t" "" SW_HIDE
and execstring is a bat file.
I'll try it with the checkrunning code from one of johns launchers. Could you post your example?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
like this should do it:
I would try putting a message box in to catch
"$EXECSTRING -t"
and running that in the command line, if that fails then there is a problem with your command. It works now.
Yay!

Hey, this looks like a really great application, but when I click on the download link it says I'm looking for something that isn't there. Can you help?
Let us know how it goes. I'm tired of mandatory fullscreen! Let me know if I can help with testing something specifically. I have XP (On a limited user accout laptop and on a non-limited desktop) and Vista Home premium.
This app is now in Pre-Release stage meaning it has moved along in the development. Will soon be official *Fingers Crossed*
