Malware Checker "Checkers" Needed
I here by volunteer to check new releases of the following for False Positives by:
McAfeeAV,
http://vil.nai.com/vil/submit-sample.aspx
AvastAV Portable
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=7779
ClamWinPortable:

1. FireFoxPortable
2. ThunderBird Portable
3. ClamWinPortable
and to Report them to the companies in question.
If we could get some more volunteers, especially the mods, and especially folks who use AVG, and Paid versions of other free products to volunteer to check AND REPORT TO THE VENDORS it would be great. Think of volunteering to check the apps that are most important to you.
Remember it is the willingness to report to the Vendor of the AntiMalware product that is important. The above reporting methods require giving out an email address but I think they can be used by anyone.
Reporting it here gives us a heads up, BUT reporting it to the Vendor GETS IT FIXED.

{edit: Logan seems to be reporting:

that the latest update from AVG might have fixed the current spate of problems they are having }
I would, but to be honest I really don't use any anti-virus software. Sure, I have ClamWin installed, but I've never used it. And I don't want to download any other products because my internet's not the greatest and I really don't know and/or like some anti-virus products.
Sorry.
Edit: Omgosh, there's reports all over the forums and release stories! I'll see what I can do.
Patrick,
I CanNot in good conscience Not say something
You really should have one real time antivirus software running at all times.
If it's a matter of money I've heard Avast is a good free one.
If it's a matter of a modem, I use one at home and I can tell you that my portable version of Avast uses incremental updates and usually takes less than a couple minutes to update, I assume the installed version would be the same.
If it's a matter of "not liking" [does that mean not trusting?] you should be able to set it to ask you what to do as opposed to doing it on it's own. A least that way you could get some warnings about possible problems.
If it's a matter of affecting the performance of your machine you could perhaps turn off the real time protection [NOT RECOMMENDED] and running an on demand scan when you are not using the computer [during dinner or while watching "LOST" perhaps] Again this is not recommended but something is better than nothing.
Especially if you are providing apps for the forum it is a good idea to check them before uploading just in case something could have infected your machine and therefore your app.
Again, you really should be using something.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
I'll look into Avast again, or Winpooch and ClamWin. I was using Avast after ZGitRDun8705 recommended it, but I got rid of it after like a week.
What was the problem with Avast if I may ask?
Remember that CWP is on demand only, but more importantly it takes FOREVER to run a full system scan [think like a hour or so on a big harddrive]. You may want to run in on particular directories that are often victims of attack like \Windows and especially \Windows\System32, etc. You can also run it against particular files you have just downloaded.
It also can do a memory scan for programs currently running which is fairly fast
Note that CW updates several times a day. The more often you update it the faster the updates will be.
Also remember that CW has had false positives too
Don't know anything about Winpooch
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
It's because on my old laptop, Avast slowed it down. However, I have a new laptop now so it shouldn't be a problem. You don't know anything about Winpooch? It's a watchdog for Windows that when configured with ClamWin gives you open source real-time scanning anti-virus! However it really slowed things down for me on my old computer.
I haven't had an anti-virus program installed in at least 5 years and have had no issues. It depends on the person. If I download something I consider "sketchy", I'll scan that one file with ClamWinPortable, otherwise, I don't need AV software.

I agree. I like to think if the person isn't a complete idiot they'll do fine not using AV software. So maybe I should get some AV software.
I really hope your kidding about this.

Yes. I just wanted to make fun of myself.
Patrick,
Don't do that
Not Funny, not funny at all

I am at such a loss for words that I guess I just don't know what to say
I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer before alpha testing your apps
And every test will now be an alpha test, sorry
BTW, and how often do you update CWP?
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
No, I'm not kidding. And I don't have a virus infestation. I'm also the sole user of my computer/network and don't have kids going to weird places to d/l whatever.
Since everyone except me is paranoid about virii, I assume y'all are scanning every file you d/l to include mine so guess what...you're "safe". Call the files what you will, won't change anything on my end.
CWP gets updated when it gets used which is less than once a month.

That's living life on the edge.
Can we get back on topic here, I think this is a good idea. I'll do F-Secure for the Firefox Betas, Thunderbird (as soon as I get IMAP set up) and Toucan.
On a slight change to the original post I think as well as checking new releases you need to use the programs fairly regularly incase a new set of definitions messes things up.
I agree,
That's why I picked my three, those are the three that I use every day.
