Eraser Portable 5.86a has been released. Eraser Portable is a secure data removal tool that can completely remove files from most media. This new release updates Eraser to the current release, has an improved launcher and installer and is now digitally signed to ensure integrity. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.
Revision 2 Note: A small update which adds in the newer Visual C++ runtimes was made to allow use on PCs without these present.

Flash Drive Note: Most modern flash drives use wear leveling to spread write operations out over a device. This interferes with Eraser (and other secure deletion utilities) ability to wipe single files. Wiping an entire drive or erasing a file and then wiping free space should still work securely, though it will put additional wear on your drive.

Eraser no longer works with Windows 95, 98, Me but the older 5.82 release is available from the Eraser Portable homepage in the Download Details section.
PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format
Eraser Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Not loading
I down loaded this and installed over the old version and now it will not open the program. I do get the splash for the portable app. sorry about posting here i did not see a forum for this app

Yes, it appears that the VC8 runtimes need including for older OSes. Give me a few minutes.
Revision 2
I added the Visual C++ 8.0 runtimes into the revision 2 package so it will work on PCs that don't have this present. Also added a note about Win 9x users using the older release as Eraser no longer works on Win 9x.
No luck
Still not working on a machine with xp and all updates. tried installing to hard drive from new rev2. same result opens splash but thats it.

Run it directly
Run eraser.exe directly and it should tell you what's wrong. I can't reproduce it. Even on a clean Windows 2000 machine.
Keep in mind this will cause it to create 5 registry entries, though.
