Notes:

Development Test 15 (2008-05-02)

  • fixed version numbers!!



Development Test 14 (2008-01-04):

  • I found where the song scores are stored, now start up should be faster
  • made loop wait for 2 secs in case of another restart



Development Test 13 (2008-16-03):

  • Now it actually works fixed all the code and added the missing files
  • fixed to loop code so in game resets will not affect the launcher


Development Test 12 (2008-16-03):

  • Stopped being lazy and added the code to move the default song files so the data folder is smaller and will run faster
  • Updated appinfo



Development Test 11 (2008-10-03):

  • Now it will check every two seconds to make sure that you did not restart in game
  • Also uses all the correct file names

Few Last Things

Okay, here's just a few last things to change.

  1. The help.html file needs a tagline, it currently has the one from WinMerge.
  2. A few times in the help file, it mentions FretsOnFire Portable which should be changed to Frets On Fire Portable.
  3. It recreate the Data directory fine now, and only takes a few seconds to copy the first time, so that's good.

However, we need to figure something out as when it copies it from DefaultData, you've now doubled your 40 megs of Data, now you have 80 megs, and 40 are not needed. We need to think of a solution for that.

Edit: I found a sweet version of the logo in the data directory, here's the appicon.ico, use that instead.

can i use 7zip to keep it compressed and then extract it if the data folder does not exist in the "Data" folder
start up may be longer but it will be smaller

This version has a different defaultdata and has a new icon
the initial startup will be slower but overall size will be smaller

Development Test 8 works great. 7-Zip extracted the files fairly fast. I'd say put 7-Zip in App\7-zip just to making it easier to identify as it is its own application.

Fixed it, it should look alright now.
what i did do though was make a different version for the xp and 256 people. because in the 256 the xp version looked like someone gnawed on it so i changed it.
now there are two different icons depending on what you color setting is

You're resident project nagger is back with a much greater fury than before:

SOMEBODY SCREWED UP THIS PROJECT BIG TIME!!!

When I tried to run Frets On Fire Portable 1.5.4.4 DT9 off my thumbdrive, it
refused to run with VERY GOOD REASON: GOOD CHUNKS OF THE GAME'S PROGRAM FILES
WERE MISSING!

Obviously, the current test version of FoF 1.5.4.4 DT9 is using version 1.1.314
unmodded due to it's simple file structure... I'm going to list off files that
are obviously missing that are required for the game. I'll make comments to
what each file is, when possible. Please be aware that I'm making an educated
guess on some of the files... so I can be wrong what they are, but they're
still fairly important.

To shorten the path name, I'll be using '~' to represent the address:

x:\PortableApps\FretsOnFirePortable\App\fretsonfire

I don't follow? powerjuce set it up so on first run the files are extracted from that 7-Zip archive to cut down about 10mb's or wasted space. Because, once the files are uncompressed, you have roughly 40mb's or data (and growing) in \Data and the 30 unneeded in \App\DefaultData\, so 7-Zip will only extract it on the first run when your settings don't exist. 7-Zip extracted it fine for me. Maybe there's an error on your computer that is causing 7-Zip not to work, but nobody 'screwed this up big time'.

(after taking a deep breath and thinking)

first of all i thank you for all the time and effort you have put into this project. Besides Patrick i think you have put a lot of work helping me find the bugs in this project.

Now I would like to ask what os you tested all this stuff on? I ran tests on locked down computers in school which run xp pro sp2, i locked my own comp down and ran it on xp home.

On all of them the game worked (however the first launch was slow), a possible problem you could be having is that you are trying to run it, then thinking it has not started, tried to run it again. That would probably cause the error.

Finally, while i appreciate your input you just insulting me and the people that helped me is not really the way to go. You can point out errors and give suggestions but kindly refrain from insulting anyone.

Tests Ran so far...

So far, I've ran FoF-P 1.5.4.4DT9 on...

* Windows ME -- Expected to fail, based on version used... which failed.
* Windows XP Home SP2 -- Failed (tested only once)

I'll test it on Windows XP Pro (SP1?) with admin restrictions in a few minutes (just as soon as I download it again)...

For some reason, the 7-Zip stuff didn't work at all & it may be something that's just too experimental to consistently work. I do apologize for sound rude, but my rage hit the roof when things went from working perfectly fine to "practically gutted" when I originally wrote that. I even let it sit for a few days to cool down (even though I had other things) before posting it... I didn't bother to go over it a second time before I did the C&P job on it (NOTE: the line count was from the text app I was using at the time).

Again, I'm sorry to blow up in your guys face. Things just in development just took an unexpected turn from the early test versions.

SUPPLEMENTAL: Windows XP Pro w/ Admin Restrictions worked after a few minutes of loading... so I will have to retract a good portion of my rant. HOWEVER, there's a few issues using the 7-Zip system.

1) Long loading time... mostly due to the decompression process. -- On average, other portable apps (like Firefox, Clamwin, Thunderbird & Pidgin) are usually up within 30 seconds (estimated, not actual), unless their starts are stacked (which can push apps like Firefox & Pidgin down the queue, taking around 3 minutes while the other apps load). DT4 runs along the average times, if not a bit faster.

2) Extremely difficult for manual upgrades / modifications -- Most FoF users will want to install the RF &/or YMS mods from the base versions. Since the FoF dev team haven't added such modifications at this time (the RF mod stuff is on the "to do" list as that author has joined the dev team), it's up to the players to do so... the current deal makes it practically impossible.

3) The feasibility of compressing everything -- let's face it... graphics & music files don't compress well in any compression format (I've tried!). While the game's core files can be squeezed even further than UPX, the game files will counter it a bit.

I still prefer DT4 for it's simplicity, even if it's eating up more disk space.

I tried a few things and accuricy is always 0%.

BTW do i hear something from what i play or does it just means clicking on correct time at predefined music without audio feedback from the player?

Good Gameplay = Guitar Track Playing

While the game plays the default song.ogg track (which should have everything EXCEPT the guitar part), you'll hear the guitar.ogg track when as long as you can hit the right frets each time.

Messing up, on the other hand, will give you a nasty "screw up" sound that can be a bit hard on the ears... especially when repeated. If you just miss a fret, the guitar.ogg track will just go silent without the screw up sound.

I should note that you don't have to be perfect when hitting the frets. Frets On Fire & Guitar Hero allows a technique call "fronting" or "hammering" (I don't the exact term) where the game will accept that you hit the fret when your timing is just a little off... especially during heavy streams where getting off beat can cause you to drop a fair number of frets (like 5 or more).

I extracted the FoF mascot

I extracted the FoF mascot from the data dir and modified the SVG to remove the borders. It's now ready here in PNG format. To be used in the splash screen for when this goes live.

I've tested this a fair bit, and so have others as you can see, John. Besides the extraction of the data which was causing issues above, all works well for me. I'm sure powerjuce can easily remove the extraction which will add an extra 10 megs if he can't get it working fine on all machines.

Some Ideas

Perhaps multiple splash screen lengths could be in the starter. One that manually starts and stops during the extraction (which will be slow on some sticks). One that starts if the Data is populated correctly.

As for the issues, lemme peak at the code and I'll see what I can see.

  • There are DLLs and stuff in Data, which is not a good thing (violates PAF). You can move files or directories back and forth on start and end, which is better.
  • You can ditch all the extra stuff for the extraction by using a single line:

USB Flash Drive

No doubt you are aware of the limited number of write cycles of a flash drive. Although most can write data 10 or 100s of thousands of times, how would excessive moving many files on app start and end of an application impact the wear on the Flash memory? (Even considering the intelligent ones that distribute the write cycles.)

Second. I understand the files were zipped because they take up much space. I don't know the reason why those files need to be in the package twice. The default data and the data folder. I guess they are not user data that should be backed up? (40MB twice?) Could it not be that another solution would be better? If the data is the music files and where additional music files are stored, maybe it belongs in the App folder itself. Somewhere that doesn't need back-uped (like the Data folder was for I believe). In what cases does the default data being used again? I would not worry about that normally but if it takes up 40MB uncompressed, twice? I considered the data folder a bit like 'levels' in a game, being part of the application itself.

Might I suggest using the App/fretsonfire or App/data folder for storing data, and not use default data? (I'm unsure how DefaultData is used.)

MOD's can supply their own DLL's btw. If the user would install additional songs or MOD the app, how would that impact the portable App? (Or backing up the Data folders, or is only Data/Settings folder being backed up by the PortableAppsBackup?

Anyway, very cool to have this application official Portable. I hope a good solution can be found.

Don't forget that 'moving' a file doesn't mean much more than altering a FAT entry. The file itself stays where it is. That's why moves happen quick.

As for the rest, I haven't fully analyzed this app, so don't know what it would need where. I was just responding to a problem brought up in the launcher.

On several occasions when I

On several occasions when I select the a song I got a Microsoft visual c++ error on fretsonfire.exe. Windows 2000Pro.

Unsure what caused that. I might need a new install.

[Edit] Hmm I reinstalled and got again an error. I might want to try the official version to see if the runtime error also shows up there.

dev test 10 is up

alright all here is the next version
changes

first: i have changed the 7z code with the script that John gave me

second: now all the dll's will be in a folder in the app\fretsonfire dir when not used

third: i upxed the 7z.exe

fourth: i made the data.7z a little smaller without the dll's but have also used a lighter compression to speed up the extraction

I tested it on a thumb drive and decompression of previous version wasnt slow at all...

DLL's are now moved when needed? doesn't that need time again? Why is the archive used? Aren't we confusion PortableApps\Data with the actual app data (App\Data)?

is used to make the /DefaultData folder smaller. Otherwise it would need even more space cause all the settings would be in the settings folder and in the /DefaultData folder.

What are the songs doing in the FretsOnFirePortable/Data? Should this not be where it is in the original?

What partrige is I dont know, but I think only the user data (High scores and settings?) should be there. Three mods? I didn't realize there were also 3 mods includes in there... Or do you mean 3 songs?

I downloaded the Frets on fire zip file and the main application has a Data folder. With Mods, Songs and Translations folder. Hmm after install there is no Data sub folder in app? The data thats zipped belongs to the standard files that come with the app...

On app start is extracts the data and on append it removes it again??? What is that good for? Then the app will always need additional space on the drive to play, and even more than it would use without a zipped default data folder. And the Data folder is for user data like saved games, high scores etc. This way it also would backup standard files belonging to the app.

If my flash drive would be almost full (and I base that on the install size) I might get problems of the game not starting because it needs additional space to unzip parts of itself. Maybe thats a problem someone ran into who posted about missing game files in this thread earlier.

i am not sure that i understand

i need to take all the data files and put them into the Data folder, that way when someone uses the pa backup utility they can backup just their Data folder.

i used the 7z file because there was some concern about saving space, with out the 7z file you would have the standard size data folder in app\defaultdata and then your custom size data folder in Data\, therefore i had to compress the data folder.

Do game musics and mods really belong in the user FretsOnFirePortable\Data\ folder?

I would just keep the original folder lay out and just copy the highscore list, log file (maybe) and the settings ini file to FretsOnFirePortable\Data\ and leave the rest as is in the FretsOnFirePortable\App\fredsonfire\ folder.

Using zipped files for people concerning with the space... Hmm. Do those people also realize when a zipped file is 30MB and unzipped 40MB they would always need the 40MB free on the USB stick to just be able to play the game? So instead of the app using appsize+40MB to play it needs appsize+30MB+40MB or else there wont be enough space to play the game. So the space potentially saved and to be used by other apps or data is less than just having plain unzipped game data. People could falsely presume that zipping means they can put more apps on their drive and still be able to play the game. I hope you understand what I mean.

If there's not that 40MB additional space people could complain about not able to play the game because of 'missing' game files.

And do people really want or need to backup game files with the PA-Backup app?

In short YES(not yelling just stressing the point Blum ) these are all data files, i cannot make it so that only way that you can save the songs is by backing up your whole app folder. And Data is all the files that either the user added or personal "data"(eg high scores settings)

Even if they do not the idea is that you should be able to drag the Data folder from one paf app to another paf app and you would have the same exact gameplay/user experience. So if i keep the song files in the app dir then if they move the Data dir to another fofp folder, you will not have the same songs because they were not part of that Data folder.

Key:
paf = portable apps format
Data = the Data dir inthe main app dir
data = the fof data dir

I just noticed the defaultdata compressed archive was still present on my USB drive. And when playing the game, having both Compressed AND uncompressed version of the same files it would mean it takes more space than just having the uncompressed files. It also would require Free space on the USB thumb drive equal to the uncompressed size else it will not be possible to have those files uncompressed and can cause missing files errors by Frets On Fire when running.

I can somewhat see your point of having additional songs and mods that were later added to be added to the backup, I only doubt the songs and mods that came with Frets On Fire as defaults.

Sound doesn't work

hi im beta testing the development/beta test of your app and everytime i play, everytime i play, everything works perfectly except the sound and its turned on pretty high and its hooked up and i dont know whats wrong so please help me. thanks - escaper43

no the game and everything in it works perfectly and it works, its just theres no sound even though the volume is up and the setting for audio in the game are all at 10/10 so im not sure wut to do. also, how do i import a guitar hero song like it says cause im not sure how. thx - escaper

i fixed the problem

ok i finally fixed it. it turned out to be a problem with my speakers. i was also wonderin. if it ends up bein released, r u plannin to add more songs?

Maybe someone will make paf installer song collections, although it will add much data to the space required. Still you can go to the Keyboards On Fire site and download many many songs for FoF.

i had to use mediafire because i forgot my sf.net password Sad

also now i have used the idea to check if it is still running in case you do a in game restart. For now it is set to 2 secs but y'all can test 2 make sure that it all works. I also fixed the file name.

DT 10 results (DT 11 tomorrow eveing)

While I grab DT 11, I'll report my results on DT 10.

I did managed to get DT 10 to work on Windows ME ONCE, but it pretty much committed suicide once I tried to enable the standard mods on it & I haven't been able to get to work since.

Windows XP Home SP2 failed as usual... so the biggest issues are involving the 7-Zip process working (which by my experience, doesn't work well), which I never liked in the first place. Therefore, I'm still sticking with DT 4 as it's the most stable IMO.

I'll do a fresh re-installation with DT 11 when I test it out & I should give my report tomorrow evening.

a couple of things

i hav tested on:

xp home sp1 (failed once worked the second time)

xp home sp2 (worked)

xp pro (worked)

xp ME (could never get it to work, to slow)

all of these were on fresh machines that had never had this program run on it

is there any one else that has experienced the problem TStodden has?

ERROR

Ok. for info, I am running on a school Windows XP computer from My Documents. (I don't have my flashdrive on hand) It started up fine. However, I go to settings. I did not change any settings, but since there is no back button, I hit apply new settngs. (Personally, I think settings should apply without restarting or being able to do extra settings before resetting) On reset, I got an error message. It runs just fine from the EXE file, resetting for settings doesn't work though. I tried this again, and the settings reset still didn't work

Limited success with DT11

On the upside... The 7-Zip stuff seems to be working on Windows ME & XP Home SP2.

The Downside... it's a one-shot wonder & changing major settings (like video options or toggling mods) causes a complete breakdown in the system, resulting in a runtime error similar to the the log posted above me.

I'm still holding on to DT4 as the version for its stability. Even if it takes up more space, it's the one version that I can easily expand & update manually.

Hey powerjuce, great work, he's the last bit of changes:

  • In the help.html file, I'd reword it a bit so you don't have any issues with the Guitar Hero creators. If you do mention Guitar Hero, I'd trademark it. But don't say so you can play Guitar Hero on the go, maybe so you can play a Guitar Hero styled game on the go. Follow?
  • Change the portable home page to /developmenttest to /fretsonfireportable in the help.html before you forget.
  • Just change the AppSource.txt to only read: "The source code for the base application in this package is available from the portable applications home page mentioned in the help.html file."
  • Change the ;Website: at the top of the source to the actual future http://PortableApps.com/FretsOnFirePortable link.
  • Change !define WEBSITE to the new homepage alias.
  • Change the CompanyName to PortableApps.com. (capital).
  • We're getting rid of splash fade, so like 80 change the 200 to 0.
  • Change the website in the Readme.
  • For all the DLL's and stuff in DefaultData, why not keep them in the ProgramDirectory by default install, so we save some space, as they are program binaries.

That's basicially it, I wanna see this release. Awesome Job!

Mods?

Can you install mods? Like rf-mod, or any other "big mod" which changes data files?
I assume you can install mods which you place in "mods" folder normally, but how about bigger mods? I will try, and see..

EDIT: It works! Biggrin To replace data files, you replace them in "~\FretsOnFirePortable\Data\data", not in "~\FretsOnFirePortable\App\DefaultData\data", which was my original thought. So well.. Thats good Smile Now I only need to copy over my song folder.. And oh, I have a suggestion. Could you in some way put all the songs in a separate folder? If you have 50 songs the "~\FretsOnFirePortable\App\fretsonfire" folder is going to be pretty full, if you copy in many folders.. Or is it the right folder?

EDIT2: Not working. The cassettes are wertical, they hook into each other, and when choosing difficult level, the screen stays red and do nothing. and I have tried two times, same result.

Does anybody elses sound

Does anybody elses sound mess up after a while playing the program?
Way too much static.
I just exit the program, start over and it's fine again.
Might just this computer though.

Nice program btw, kinda hard to make your own songs though. Biggrin
Especially when they have to be .ogg files, all mine are wma or mp3.

Just Convert

Getting them to .ogg is easy, just convert them with something like BonkEnc or winLAME.
