PNotes 3.5.0 - released

Hi all!
New version of PNotes is ready for testing. The program becomes more and more complicated with the lapse of time - I think next version will be called PNotes Studio Enterprise or PNotes Workshop Professional Edition Smile

(changed 08 Mar 2008 14:42 to RC1)
https://downloads.sourceforge.net/pnotes/PNotes_3_5_103_RC1.zip

Well, what's new:
1. Added ability to create and modify notes groups via Control
Panel
(this is the most important change, Control Panel has been almost re-written). Change note's group by drag-and_drop or via note's context menu. Groups can be created, modified, deleted, dragged to other groups etc. The default group is "General"
2. Added visual notification for scheduled notes. "Attention" icon will blink over note if this option is selected on Preferences->Schedule page.
3. Restored note's context menu which was lost with edit box to rich edit changing (right-click on edit box).
4. Skinless notes may be rolled to caption size (or restored) by
double click on caption. (Preferences->Appearance_>Roll/unroll...)
5. "AlwaysOnTop" became common property of all notes.
6. Transparency of note will not change on mouse events, like
Enter or Leave, but on changing focus only.
7. Added command to restore note's placement - in some cases notes got
negative size and/or location and disappeared.
8. Bug fixed - prevented improper resizing of skinless notes.
9. Bug fixed - new note moved on creation to the top of windows hierarchy.
10. Bug fixed - setting schedule type to "pester" did not affect immediately,
if previous schedule type wasn't "No".
11. Bug fixed - timer of "pester" schedule type reset to 0 while changing skin.
12. Bug fixed - transparent note became opaque on saving it from Control Panel.

As usual I'm waiting for your bug reports and suggestions.

Thank you,
lamer

lamer: I don't use the app, but I appreciate your dedication to your app in improvements and refinements. So many apps on sf.net are "dead"...glad to see you're not burned out programming on PNotes (yet). Smile

You may be right

I gave the first release a quick run and it seemed OK, but, to be honest, I am simply to dependant on this program to take a big risk on running an unstable version (and yes, you can take that as a compliment).

Seeing as noone else is finding anything wrong with it... I'll bite the bullet and shift to the new beta. I've got a good backup - I'll just have to be careful for a few days Wink

Th launcher for 1.1 suggest so as well. It was John's. Guess I should get off my duff and have a look see for myself.

I wonder if John would mind if I posted a new portable version?

No

I don't think he would. Go for it. It supports some Command Line switches to move the settings to a different location. Check out the update Ryan posted a while back.

Well- I got one done already. Hehe. I haven't regshotted the thing yet, but if its natively portable, this one should work.

I'll look for the command line as you suggested. I left John's name in, said that I updated it. Has the installer, blabla, bla bla.
I won't bother doing a beta forum posting until later- when I've double checked on the true portability.

Looks pretty good, although I didn't add help file, license and skins to beta archive. Thanks!
I hope I will release shortly , if there won't be serious bugs.

Thanks for the heads up on the portability. I noticed it only had one skin.

I like the app- I just don't use it like I should. I was really heavy on it for a bit- I still use it off and on. I like what you've done from the first release- alot of good improvements.

Is there a way you could email me or otherwise notify me when the beta goes final?
Thanks

Turns out that Ryan's

Turns out that Ryan's launcher will run the newer version- just update the app and go.

So, the option is to either update Ryan's launcher (which wouldn't be hard) by just putting in the new beta or switch mine over to his method- which would be harder.

I think Ryan's would be the preferred method, as there's no file renaming.
So- I'm gonna email and ask what he thinks should be done (which I probably should have done in the first place).

Care to weigh in? As to your preferred method?

I'd say easier is better, if Ryan's works just fine by simply dropping the app in, I'd do it that way.

I emailed him earlier- I'll check if he minds (so I'm not stepping on any toes). If not, then I'll switch it over. The current development test is functional- so I don't think there's any real hurry in the matter.

one bug, one mis-feature

First the bug....

On upgrading from the 3.0 version to 3.5, it lost all the colour settings on my notes and defaulted them back to yellow (not skinned). Not exactly disasterous, but definitely annoying.

And the (mis-)feature

Can I ask why you moved always-on-top to be a global setting instead of per-note?

A handful of my old notes were set to always-on-top - mostly the scheduled ones. All of the rest were quite happy to sit on whatever level I put them.

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to go back to 3.0, and probably stay there, if this stays the way you handle on-top settings :(, which is a real shame, as I love the new categories in the control panel.

1) Really bug, confirm. Need some time to figure it out. Actually, there should not be "upgrading", everything should just continue to work as is.
2) To be honest I'm not delighted with new "OnTop" principle as well. I think I'll return the old one - anybody mind it?

This may have been from a feature request of mine way back. Ideally, I'd like to see an On-Top option for the 'Default' note template. So when I create a new note, it always has the On-Top option enabled.

Of couse I should be able to change that later on a per-note basis.

It was tricky...gosh!
Anyway, new build is ready - see the first post.
"On top" rolled back to be single note property instead of global.
New note is always "on-top".
And several fixes and improvements collected here and from users's feedback.

Awesome!

Well, I can confirm that you've fixed the losing-the-settings bug - all my notes kept their colours and top-ness status Smile

I've had a quick play, and everything seems fine!

However, can I suggest that you might want to put a global preferences button in the control panel - it seems a little counter-intuitive to have to go down to the taskbar for it (or am I just missing it somewhere).

Keep up the great work!

I believe Development Tests start over whenever the main app version changes, so you should be right with a new Dev Test 1.

Busy

Ryan's a bit busy with a conference at the moment. Any idea what his launcher was supposed to do differently?

Also, is this the current stable release? If I recall, you'd posted that yours was ready to go with Ryan's update. I'll see if I can get it moving as PNotes is one I'd like to get official next week, too. You up for supporting/updating it ongoing?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

His launcher uses the command line switch. That's all. I've looked at it- actually, all one would have to do is swap out the old pnotes.exe for the new one.

Mine follows your model and renames them (moves) to the data folder.

I'm up for supporting and updating- but I may not have internet access this summer. I'm working on getting a laptop to cure this, but, picking a laptop I'm happy with is . . . tricky. . .

I won't have net most if not all of this week- if you email me though, I can check it. Email is the best way currently- as I don't have a internet connection at home. Its complicated. Provided a laptop- I can leach of my church's network or my pastors.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Delete on SF

You can delete released files on SF. Edit the file release and down where the file is listed there's a delete button with an 'are you sure' checkbox. Check the box, hit delete, and it's gone.

Yes, of course I know that, but unfortunately this will not delete the files physically - they remains on servers, and everybody who has a link to them may download then, even if I upload new files with the same names - actually nothing happens, files remain old, I cannot replace them. I should send special support request in order to delete files im project I "manage"!

Replace

I'm fairly certain this isn't true, at least if you replace the file with a new one with the same name. I've done this before with GnuCash Portable and the updated file was then available to download. It may take awhile for mirrors to update to the new file however.

If this was true it would mean that there'd be no way to delete/replace partially uploaded files except by waiting for them to fall off the upload server. I have replaced those MANY times when my uploads failed halfway through by adding them to the file release and then deleting and re-uploading.
