Task Coach Portable 0.69.1 Pre-Release 1

This has been released:
https://portableapps.com/apps/office/task_coach_portable

I've just posted a pre-release of Task Coach Portable. Patrick Patience created this one and this is a finalization of his work with a few minor changes: Task Coach was updated to 0.69.1, the launcher was updated to correctly display the missing file name, the files (EXE, DLL, PYD) were all UPX compressed and the ZIPs recompressed, the icon was updated, the splash fade was removed and an official splash screen was added.

Download Task Coach Portable 0.69.1 Pre-Release 1 [7.5MB download / 9.6MB installed]

As this has gone through a good round of testing and there are no major changes, it should be release-worthy and if there are no issues, it'll be released next week. Please give it a thorough testing in the meantime.

Lol, Dude

This is not what I meant. I was JUST uploading it. You could have sent me the splash, no?

Again, just tell me... I do not like this at all.

Sure, it might get some more downloads being on SourceForge, and being posted by you, but it just makes it look like you can't let anyone be independent.

If you'd rather...

If you'd rather I just give comments back to all the threads, then I can do that and not do any releases tonight. Every app has some minor bits that need fixing (like the icon and the bug about the missing file warning message in your launcher) and things added (like the official splash) and that's part of compiling the releases. I'm not trying to make this 'my' app or anything like that.

And the SF downloads are part of the process. We only get a couple hundred downloads of pre-releases, so it won't affect our numbers at all. But it ensures that we have the binaries and the source from them available in perpetuity long after we think we need them (and when we later find we do).

What is it that you're expecting here? Even when we have multiple release techs, we won't be having individual devs compiling their own launchers and installers. They'll be submitting the packages and the release techs will verify the bits, compile the launcher, digitally sign it, compile the installer, digitally sign the package, run the installer and install the app, ensure that it runs and then release.

Well, We Don't Get Much

The problem I have is that you have so much control over this site that people are just going to think all the apps are by you. Really, there's no real good way to determine except the source. I know the source is all based on top of your excellent work, but it we just have someone like you make the release announcement, it'll be 'Yay! Another release by John T. Haller'. Most people don't know what goes on beyond scences, and we'd all like a little credit.

Releases

Actually, Steve and Ryan have written and maintain their own pages for their apps. And they write their own release 'stories' that get posted on the homepage. And they're posted as 'from' them. For example, see the Toucan 1.2.1.1 announcement. You'll also notice Steve's name on the publisher line on the Toucan homepage. All the contributed apps will work this way.

I had floated the idea of having a 'maintained by' or something similar on other apps about 6 months ago, but folks said no. I can't remember if this was in forum or via email, though... I think it was via email. Personally, I want to see people recognized for their contributions and make a point to do so in acknowledgment sections, etc... even when their contributions are no longer included in the finished product. One of the things coming in the update this week after I finish these apps is an update to the about us page. I just want to double check with the admins, moderators, developers and packagers and ensure I can use their full names (it looks much more 'real' to prospective partners than handles). They're also all going in the about box in the 1.1 and further platform releases of the menu itself (which I think will be a cool thing to be able to show other people).

I don't really know what else I can do besides that.

I know

How about.

Keeping names beside the CompanyName in the source, I see you left mine. And adding them beside the company name in the AppInfo as well. That's, and a release story posted by 'me' (personally I'd actually like to write mine which I guess I can and someone else can post it).

About page deff. sounds cool.

Hmm

I've actually been moving past keeping names in the CompanyName field. I was originally thinking of doing that for everybody and I used to have mine on all the apps I maintain, but it ultimately felt a bit overboard. I mean, there are ideas and contributions from others in many of them. And many folks won't be seeing that line anyway (they'll be using the menu).

Perhaps splitting out the developer/maintainer line in download details would help a little (I think it's a bit lost as a parenthesis behind PortableApps.com in the Publisher field. And we'll be doing developer profiles or expanded profiles as well. I have a pretty good way to do bigger profile pics and added info. I'm just waiting til we upgrade to Drupal 6 to see our options (and we're waiting for SimpleNews, Spam and Views to be updated to Drupal 6 til we can).

Cool

That sounds good. In the topic of modules, have to ever seen Drigg? It may be a good way to handle app requests as Ryan was suggesting, or even just adding one of those to each release story instead of just Digg for certain ones. I know it's mainly for more content info/blog based sites, but it might not be a bad idea.

Sorry for the off-topicness.

Haha

Drigg.
Made me lol. Smile

And I think its good if John takes a "final look" at every app. Its not that John doesn't trust people like you, Ryan or others or him being the "dictator" here but he started the whole thing and is responsible so I think its justified.

seems to work with Vista

I've done some basic testing tonight, and it seems to work without problem in Vista Ultimate. I'll try and do some more testing in the morning and if I find anything unusual I'll post it,

Development Test 2

I updated Task Coach to a development test to change unnoticeable thing that have nothing to do with the program, just me being pick. Grab it here.

John, I didn't do any of the language stuff as I didn't understand entirely what you wanted me to do. I understand how it's getting the language and all, just didn't know whether you wanted me to have it write it out in the INI apposed the variable which GIMP supports, etc.

So...let me know. Thanks.

(File'll be a couple more minutes)

WINE?

If someone gets a chance, could they test this in WINE please. I'm having problems with my virtual machine right now.
