winrar is surpassed by our 7-Zip portable so that throws that one out of the question.

and Skype i believe is closed source so, no.

and do they even work with the PAM?

I've been using them and they seem to work. 7zip was too much work to deal with something simple so this worked a lot better i left them here in case someone needed them is all I'm not saying this site should or should not endorse them just leave them here if for convenience of the public if its ok. thanks i was just trying to help :p. oh and um what do you mean closed source? Oh and thanks for the welcome sir.

Sometimes when people say

Sometimes when people say that apps can't be included in the OpenSource suite available here it sounds like they are saying the applications are bad, when in fact they are saying that they can't be distributed from SourceForge, or don't meet the current mission of this site.

Open source applications are distributed with their source code, so people can confirm that the code does what it says it does, or maintain it at some point in the future if the original developer gets hit by a truck. Closed source applications are those where the source code is kept private by the developer.

Another consideration is the license. This site is trying to stay on the right side of licensing issues. So this site would allow links to, say, WinRAR at Rapidshare, only if the owner of WinRAR allows distribution of that package from Rapidshare. If the packages available at Rapidshare include cracks or serials, that would also suggest you shouldn't link to them from this site. If you just want to recommend some software, you can enter its name; most people here can use Google to find software that another person recommends, and if you just recommend it without linking to it, you don't risk being accused of violating somebody's license. (It probably won't slow down those who are into hacks and cracks either.)

On a slightly different subject, this site has a place for you to put your home page (user account | edit), and asks that you do not link to it also in your signature. Home page links already show up on each message, so linking in the signature just clutters things up. (You can still refer to it, just tell people to click on your homepage link.)

Installing Portable Apps!

Hello, I am pretty much a newbie to all this computer stuff and I would like to know if I could get any help in installing some applications into my PortableApps Menu? I have downloaded the basic PortableApps onto my flash drive because I wanted to pick and choose which applications that went into the drive and it worked like a charm. I was able to install about eight different programs. Now I have three other programs that are also portable applications but not from this site, WinRAR, Pegasus Mail and TreePad.

I purchased WinRAR a few months ago and I would like to use it on my flash drive. There are instructions on how to load apps into the menu that are not from this site but I just found them way too complicated for me. What I have been doing is downloading an application from the website and placing it into a folder on my desktop. I then plug in my flash drive and I open up an additional folder, the E: folder that corresponds to the folder that has my PortabeApps on it. That folder contains three icons, Documents, StartPortableApps and Portable Apps. I then copy and paste the downloaded program into that E: Folder with the three icons. Then I double click the PortableApps icon in my task bar next to the clock and when the Portable Applications Menu pops up I click on the options tab and form there it seems like a piece of cake to install the application.

Now comes the hard part, with the other portable applications that I download and wish to install. I just can't figure out just what to do with them. I copy and paste them onto my E: drive and when I click on options they are not visible in the window that pops up like the other apps are? Also after doing some readings on the net about portable applications it seems that it is better to download zip files rather than exe files, I don't know for sure but I as I said I do have some programs that I need to install in the menu that are several files or folders and some that are exe files and I would like to know how to do that in a way that does not have to much computer jargon contained in the instructions?

welcom here.

ON the page where you can download the menu, there is a "Support" section and there you'll find a link that reads Adding Apps to the PortableApps Menu. That one links to a description about how to make any exe appear in the menu. The short version is: just put the exe in a folder in your X:/PortableApps/ folder.

The thing you read about exe vs. Zip is because most exe files are installers and thus install the stuff to your PC. Zips can be extracted to your drive and run from there more easily than installling the exe and then copying things over to your drive.

I hope that helps a bit.

Why?

a link to winrar unplugged at raidshare when you can safe download it from their website?

And there are many many instructions to portabilize skype, no need to redistribute a "pirated version"... Wink google is your friend Blum

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

.

The skype link is illegal because is about a modified Skype, and Skype license don't allow to distribute a modified program since is not open source... you can post instructions to modify it ourself (a how to) but not distribute a modification... well, a launcher can be published, but type in the same post very clearly that the program itself is not included and that each user have to do it by him/herself.

In fact, Skype portable is very easy to do by yourself.

The Winrar link is not illegal because it is the same unmodified App that is available in the website, Winrar license don't allow you to distribute a modified program because is not open source, but in this case is not a modified program... but... since the same program is available in the author's website is better to point to there and not to an unknown source as a ftp site...

The Only Portion of winrar thats Open-Source (I Think) would be the unrar portion, but the Rar archiver is unfortunetly is not Open-Source

Too bad... BWinRAR is my

Too bad... WinRAR is my personal favorite when it comes to archiving tools. Next in line would be PeaZip because I like the simple structure of it. Just open the app, choose if I want to Archive or Extract, then it's done.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.
