Will do. Thanks John!
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
It works fine for me.
Maybe I can use this code for my OpenCity Portable (they both use sdl)
*Edit* Maybe there's a way to make it use less processing power
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
Maybe there's a way to make it use less processing power - Maybe that gets better after I UPX'ed it. Other than that I don't know any technique to achieve that.

I couldn't check if it left anything, as I never learned how but with playing hte game, even after changing Player 1 name from Michael to Jameson, it would still say "Michael" when I was playing the game.
Other than that, it worked fine for me on my Dell Optiplex WinXP from my usb key..
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
I have to do another release anyhow tomorrow morning so Ill take a look. Did it say Michael even after restarting the game?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Every time I restarted the game, it kept the popups as Michael. It does say "Jameson" in the "First Player" spot, and up at the top.
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
Editing the names is a little weired. Hover the mouse over the name and start typing.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
and I installed the dve 3 version. I hover, change the name, and it is correct in the top right corner. Just that when I started a new game, the one that says 2:17 in the blocks, the pop up says, "Late at night (1/25) - Michael Specks"
Unless that is just the title of the game level?
Everything else works fine playing it, even though it says "Damn!" a lot.
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
thats the name of the game level cause Michael Specks is the name of the author.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Today I found a bug. If I run this game in a virtual machine under Ubuntu, it wont stop and I have to kill the process resulting in unsaved settings. Is that a SDL issue? Does anybody know something about that? I have access to other PCs so its not a big issue but it like to know if there's a fix.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
AppInfo.ini is the one for VLC.
Other than that, nothing left behind at all, game works well. Good Job.

Here they are, really cool game by the way I love that kinda game:
And there you have it, thanks for this.
I think there should be better specs on that post here when your app is ready thread
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
I knew about the appinfo - thats why I put it into the main post
What about these:
* What do I have to change in the Programm Details section?
* Is the VIAddVersionKey LegalCopyright "Simeon" or "PortableApps.com & Contributors"?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
told me on the messenger to make it portableapps.com & contributors simply because it's a derived work of John.
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
John told us that a while back.
And Simeon, the rest of the program details look fine as you have them.
Is it just me, or is the sound kinda bad? Scratchy. Out of sync.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Very scratchy.
Its not very good quality at all lol
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
First I thought that uxp messed something up but I just downloaded the original and it has the same weird distorted sound. Should I just delete them and make it a quiet game? That even would decrease the size another 400kb
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
You should try to make some with Audacity and other tools.
It's not the sounds themselves, I think it's bugs in the coding of the sound mixer or the way the app is calling it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
but in addition to that the quality of the sounds is bad even if I use VLC to listen to them.
EDIT
I got it.
There is a switch where you can increase the sound buffer size and after I did that (to 1024) it was normal.
Ill do a DevTest 3 with the default data and with an increased buffer. Could the increased buffer cause the game to be slower on slower PCs/drives?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Good catch! Even 1024 is still pretty small in today's world. I think it'll be fine. With the sound bugs worked out, I think this is ready for a pre-release. Do you have a hi-res logo?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
If he doesn't have a high-res logo, I can try to make one tonight.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
That would be great!
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
No I don't have a logo and grafics is one of my weaker areas. Maybe someone could make one?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Maybe upstream the solution back to the original developers
Definitely send it back as a bug report on SF for them along with the solution. Wherever we can, we should be helping the projects we repackage get better and succeed.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Lamer is the best example for that...:)

Ran once, didn't really play very long, maybe 5 seconds, closed out. Traces left behind are as follows. Game ran fine, just I didn't have enough lunch break left to justify a full round of breakout at work.

Weird. Because if I run the zip from the authors website, it stores its settings in its own directory.
Did you run it from your usb drive or someplace else?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I ran the app 'installer' from my USB drive. Which installed it to the USB drive.
Ran the app itself from PAM (R30 mod).
Ran it directly from launcher, same results. 'E:\PortableApps\LBreakout2Portable\LBreakout2Portable.exe'
Ran it directly from app, same results. 'E:\PortableApps\LBreakout2Portable\App\lbreakout2\lbreakout2.exe'
No local installation of LBreakOut.

I kinda run out of ideas. Maybe Ill have a revelation later this week.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
works great, good job on fixing the sound. didn't seem to leave any traces on my machine.
For dev test 3 you say the user has to delete their Data folder for sound settings to apply. Is there a way you could parse the settings file to fix the sound settings instead of forcing the user to delete any custom settings they may have?
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
but I figured as it is a DevTest I could get around that
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Development Tests are test versions. So, users are generally expected to read release notes, etc. If this were an actual release (stable or pre-release) then we'd be sure to handle it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
both in Vista and XP...
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
I have been playing this for about a week off and on. Nice for break time at work.
Lots of features/options!
The only thing I would like is a 'Quick Play' button on the first screen. Maybe in the options a way to set up what it will play (random, Original Set, addon, etc)
Unfortunately I cant add new features/buttons as I only made the portable version. But I wanted that feature too so I´ll make a feature request to the original developer.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Hi Simeon,
I play the Linux-version of Lbreakout at home and the portable-version at work. So I can tell you some bugs:
Sometimes the ball starts at once -> ESC and Resume is the workaround
sometimes the background is neon-green-Yellow -> ESC and Resume
sometimes the ball flies very fast at start -> klick the middle button
I cannot find out, when or why the bugs appear.
Good Work!
Hartmut
I had the "background-bug" once but didnt bother looking for the "why".
I will include your workarounds into the helpfile of the next release.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I'd be interested in the server.
Also, I was wondering if the sounds get lower as the ball gets closer to the left side of the board for anyone else or is it just me?
how much it takes to include the server or make a separate package.
And Ill check the sound issue...
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I noticed it too...but it's because I was using headphones and only had the right one in...it's because the game is in stereo I presume.
Along with the sound though....I use VLC to listen to streaming music, but as soon as I start LBreakout it kills that sound...completely. All my other sounds (Pidgin, etc) still work...but it kills VLC.
Ignore my previous comment if you want. That was on my work laptop. Here on my desktop at home everything works beautifully, sound included.
says under "Troubleshooting" that:
Disabling sound while playing seems to result in loosing various
sound channels when some sounds were actually mixed.
So I guess the soud issue is LBreakout itsself and we cant do anything about it.

I think it's pre-release time:

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
is pretty "pixxely".
Can someone make a better one?
And John, what about including the server?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Best I could do with what there was. Smoothed it looks awful.
Server is your call. As long as it's integrated into the game and doesn't require a second icon. If it does, then leave it out.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
a look at the server again. Originally I dropped it cause it made things more difficult. But I dont know any more to what extent.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
If the server has to be a seperate package I would be ok with that.
The theme looks like it may take a while, I might not be done by release time
i agree, but i think the logo needs to be way more high res for the splash screen. i'll work on re-doing it. i may do it in inkscape, but if i decide to do it in gimp or photoshop, what resolution should it be at?
128px is what we use on the site. The splash is a little smaller.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I think the biggest one is the one on the splash or maybe the one on the Apps page. Maybe John can tell you what res the others have.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
well i'm not too excited about how it turned out but this is what i have so far for the logo. http://www.nascent-project.org/travisc/longerterm/l2breakout2.png . i'll try to tweak it later, or if zach can do better he can make one.
That works fine for what we need.
https://portableapps.com/temp/LBreakout2Portable.jpg
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
to the splash screens are the same...

Refresh to clear the cache, perhaps?
I always forget that.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I decided to drop the server and maybe put it into a separate package.
Do you want to release it now or wait for a PortableApps.com theme?
I'd release it now and put the theme into a future version.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Assuming that Everything else is fine and your only question is the theme I vote for now.
If it's still PR2 on Monday I'll download and give it a go.
You talk about a server, what does the server do?
Really looking forward to the release of this
Thanks Simeon
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
lets you play over the net against someone else. I havent tried it yet so its hard to describe
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Please, please, please
Release a version without a server.
The Only apps I like to even have the ability to connect to the internet are apps that have to to fulfill their basic function, eg, FF, TB, IM programs.
There are a couple of apps I've seen on the site that I do not want to use because they seem to be dependent on internet access that I don't want.
I think the poker game and media converter are a couple I would try if they did not have the ability to connect to the internet.
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
I'll only do a server as a separate package if I find the time but probably not.
But if you dont connect it to the internet, PokerTH doesnt connect to/needs the net at all (Other than Sumatra).
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
You would prefer to play poker against the computer, rather than a human?
modem ya'know
and I prefer to do my fun stuff off line.
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Ok, here is the progress on the theme so far. http://img211.imageshack.us/my.php?image=06072008141610gp5.png
http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=06072008142324jl8.png
I've done the frame and am working on the paddles now. Any opinions/suggestions?
I need to contact the developer and find out if there is a way to use transparency in the active extras that display on the right border, but that may have to wait.
The paddle is going to have to change some, because it doesn't look right at the smallest size.
I may see if MrElchbau and NeoRame want to help with some parts. Turns out a complete theme is a lot of graphics.
I'll probably change the sounds to. Does anyone have recommendations for sounds?
EDIT: Here is a shot of the paddle at smallest size. Do you think I should do someting different with the paddle?
http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=06072008150827mo1.png
I dont like the paddle. I think it should be flat at ther top. But I dont have a creative idea...:(
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=06072008161248so3.png
Here is another paddle...
but in my opinion, the paddle could just be a PortableApps.com-red thing without the logo. But maybe others like the logo-paddle better.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Well Simeon, i've decided I'm going to do multiple versions of the paddle.png and rename them. If someone prefers a different paddle all they have to do is rename a couple png.
Here is a screenshot of MrElchbau's paddle, blocks, and "less flat" frame.
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/3512/06092008224845mj6.png
I think I like the flat frame better it looks more like the PAM 1.1 skin to me. MrElchbau's paddle and blocks are way better than mine though. Maybe we should release 2 versions?
You mean 2 versions, one standard and one with this as the main theme?
I dont know. I'd rather do it as a "Addon pack" or something so we dont force users to look at out icon all the time. I think the modified player names are enough
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Do you mean the Menu screen? You don't think we should use that?
EDIT: You mean the paddle, the ball, the blocks, etc...
Well you are packaging it, we'll send the different themes to you and let you pick I guess. Unless someone wants to make a poll...
Great!!

I've been playing around with it on and off for the past little while, and haven't had any problems using it on vista ultimate sp1. Also, I wasn't able to find anything obvious left behind either.
for testing.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
This game works great. The only issue I have with it is that when I run the program all other sounds I have, such as internet radio or music through Winamp, are muted. They are still playing, but they are muted. The sounds in LBreakout work fine, I just don't understand why other sounds can't be played at the same time.
I think its a problem with the game itself. It uses the SDL libraries for sound. The included version is 1.2.4, but on the SDL page , the latest version is 1.2.13. Ill try if replacing them helps the sound issue.
EDIT
Could you try the latest package and report back?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
That fixed it. I replaced SDL.dll with the one on the SDL website v1.2.13 and everything works perfectly now. Thanks.
Thats exactly what I did in Prerelease 3. But I replaced all 3 sdl files. Could you try my package too?
If we have a couple other testers ensuring that everything is ok I think John can release it
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Works, with no sound problems.
Confirmed, sound on breakout and winamp at the same time.
I've tried it as well in vista ultimate sp1 while running music in the background and I wasn't able to duplicate that problem with pre-release 3
I took the liberty of leaving a post at the LGames forum on SF informing them of the new SDL files.
Thanks
