Proxy Authentication

I've configured proxy settings in Thunderbird and the authentication window does not appear. Connection to the pop server then times out.

I use the same url as my web browser, so I know I am using the correct settings.

Is there anything else that needs to be configured?

Tbird Proxy

I also installed the non-portable version and same results. So, I think I ruled out it being specific to the portable version.

Very nice support.

TB-specific

Your question would be more TB related than PTB-related and you would probably have far better luck asking on mozillaZine. The forums here are more for specifically portable questions.

And on your sarcastic "nice support" remark. Let's see... you're getting free apps, that are made portable for free, hosted on a website that someone else is paying for and getting support for free from a group of unpaid volunteers. If you don't have anything nice to say, please leave.

John, I suggest you at least

John, I suggest you at least have a better support model in place. One where there is at least a response to questions or we would look into it or notified there is paid support. I knew I would get a response by being sarcastic. Smile That's the oldest trick in the book.

How else should I have phrased my question? I fully support what you are doing and at some point would consider donating to the project. If I didn't take the initiative to install the original non-portable version and test how would I know if it wasn't something done by you compressing the app.?

I do apologize for be sacastic, but now maybe you can see what support means to selling a good product. I can vision you making this into something big and eventually charging for all the apps. As you know, and your parents probably told you, "nothing is for free".

This isn't commercial

Like it or not, this isn't commercial. There is no paid support offered, so you simply need to accept what the support is. Support for Firefox and Thunderbird themselves is exactly the same. You post a note on mozillaZine and hope you get someone that helps you out. That's it. And lots of times, you may not get a response. OpenOffice.org, same thing. Sunbird, Gaim, ClamWin, AbiWord... same thing.

Say it with me.... the people here are volunteers... VOLUNTEERS. Noone has an obligation to respond to you. And we're not being paid anything to support you... or to build these apps. You aren't entitled to instant support. I took the time to respond with what I thought would be the best course of action for determining how to fix your problem.

And that's the way free software works. If you don't like it, too bad.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Exactly

Plus, since it's open source, if it's a new error, we may be able to find the code that is wrong with it.

too bad

John, too bad. Now I see Steve Lamerton's point. You have a good idea that will go nowhere with your attitude. Won't stop me from portable apping though. Smile

My opinion

I don't get you, I see that you waited less than 24 hours before you made a sarcastic remark just to get on someones nerves. What is that about. Being sarcastic does not get you the help you need, WAITING patiently for one of the volunteers that help on this site would have been more beneficial to you. To me, sarcasm has no place in conversation when asking for help, it does nothing but create tension and more than likely ward off people from helping you.

Also, I do not understand why you are bringing Steve into this, When or I should where has he said that John's attitude would make this site go nowhere. @Steve, I don't ever remeber you stating this view. You are a great supporter of this site, and everything it stands for. Am I correct?

@adamson67, maybe next time practicing a little patience would be the key to getting a helpful answer from those of us who help here.

You have your answer from John above and I hope it helps you out in the end.

One last thing, the purpose of the site and the group of developers, end-users, support people and those who just like what we are doing and hang out here, is to bring a portable existence to the world. A FREE portable existence. This only happens when everyone works together and helps out. This of course comes with the aspect of respect to all of those who work here, those that do this full time and those that do it as a hobby. So please save the sarcasm and work with the community and respect those that have brought this great products to you. This also goes for the Open-Source community as a whole.

Sorry it was long, but it is my opinion.

Entitlement vs Community

One of the bad things with doing free software is that you will often encounter people that feel they are entitled to everything. They are entitled to a new release faster. They are entitled to instant support for free. They are entitled to a community forum where they can say whatever they want and participate for free. Many of these people aren't even willing to contribute back anything of value (code, answering questions in the forums, useful ideas, money, even a few supportive words).

I get lots of supportive comments and such via email... but you'd be amazed how many abusive emails I get, too. "Why isn't this release out yet?! Get off your ass!" "Make this portable for me!" "The website is down? Unprofessional! I will never use your crap again" (And yes... I receive all of these on a fairly regular basis... and, yes, these are near-exact-quotes) I currently have 200 portable apps-related emails to respond to and I can guarantee you that I'll have quite a few of each of these in there.

Like it or not, this is an entirely volunteer-driven community. We're not paid. We don't do this as a part of our job. We're doing this to help people. We're doing this because we enjoy it. We're doing this because we want to make a difference in the world. And we're doing this in what little spare time many of us have.

This is the way open source software projects operate. If you check out any of the base projects that the portable versions are based on, they all have the same thing... a community forum somewhere where users support users and developers support users as time permits.

Welcome to the world of open source. Now, please, play nice... or go home Smile

Wow, you guys do have a lot of time on your hands given the long replies. So, if donations are made, where is the money going? Support?

You sir, are an idiot

And I say that in the nicest possible way.
You donate money because you think that John is doing an awesome job. All of us on this site are volunteers. I dont think John has even met most of us. If we wanted to, we could just walk away.
Wait for a bit, and you will get an answer. I know that most people probably aren't in the same time zone as you. Plus, we do have "Real Lifes™". I know most of us either go to school or work, and as such may not be on for days at a time.
OK, I think that's enough of a lesson for today.

Unbelievable !!

Hi

I was so annoyed by the comments of some on this thread that I joined the forum just to reply.

Firstly adamson67

I am appalled by your comments and attitude on this thread. I am assuming you are probably 14 years old or thereabouts sat alone in your bedroom, likes heavy metal, goth perhaps, alone, no friends, no girlfriend and basically frustrated with the world…am I right ? If not and you are any older then you should be ashamed of yourself. It is precisely your sort of attitude that corrupts and spoils many good things in this world and I hope you grow out of it soon. I simply cannot comprehend the sort of attitude you have displayed here. I want I want I want, I hope your parents read this and give you the punishment you deserve.

I will never understand you or people like you. No charity, kindness or willingness to do anything for nothing. You are so self centred you don’t begin to grasp why John has VERY KINDLY given his spare time to you and provided you with a free application in the hope you find it useful. You are just a taker, worse than that you are a taker and a then you moan about it ! I suggest you go out and wash a few cars for some pocket money then ask an adult with a credit card to contribute to John’s efforts here by way of an apology for your behaviour.

John.

The population count of this world is massive. There are many decent people such as yourself but unfortunately due to the massive population and the law of averages there will be some small minded, retarded, selfish, just plain ungrateful people mixed in amongst us. I am sorry but it sounds like some of them use your applications and then write to you.

Please bear in mind that for every whining, moaning, ungrateful internet leacher there are hundreds of people who really appreciate your work and efforts. I am ashamed of myself for not taking the time to join this forum earlier just to say thank you for the latest realise of Portable Thunderbird. I however couldn’t hold back after reading the whining, ungrateful scribbling of adamson67.

So from myself and millions of others I say thank you very much for your work and please don’t let this kid or any other ungrateful self centred retard deter you from continuing.

God bless you John and all the other authors of free software, you make the world a much better place.

Funny considering you did respond !!

John,

Please don’t waste your time reading this thread. I am sure everyone here except perhaps one, would much rather you spent any spare time you had doing what you do best, making cool apps for everyone to share and enjoy. Please just ignore adamson67 as he is obviously just looking for a fight by his own admission.

Please just remember John that the majority of people really appreciate your work and it just annoys me that the trouble causers seem to be the loudest. Perhaps you could place a “thank you” button next to the download button so people can show their appreciation without having to join the forum as many people don’t like to do that sort of thing. As I said before I am ashamed that I didn’t join the forum just to say thank you earlier but after reading adamson67 posts it just gave me the incentive.

Rise above it John and he will go away eventually.

If it was up to me, he should be banned from a computer altogether.
