@Steve Lamerton - QEMU recompile

I have some questions on the recompiled version of QEMU.

Did you use the official QEMU sources of the latest build (0.9.1), or did you use the outdated QEMU on Windows that hasn't been updated since early 2007?

Will you submit your changes to the official QEMU development or to QEMU on Windows?

Will your recompiled version be available as its own package somewhere?

Oooh,

a topic with my name in it!

Yes, I compiled my own copy from the 0.9.1 source with a couple of changes, such as the addition of a nice logo by John as the base app is iconless! I also changed the title of the program. I would have to clean up the code a fair bit to ask for inclusion and to be honest I don't think that there is much point, it is nothing that couldn't be done easily by the author if he wanted to. I hadn't heard of QEMU on Windows before and I must say I can't really see the point in it, does it provide something new?

I suspect that when it get released here on PA.com it will be available both separately and will a couple of versions of Linux, but don't quote me on that Wink

Yep that is your name I

Yep that is your name Wink

I hadn't heard of QEMU on Windows before today either, that's actually what brought about this question lol. QEMU on Windows is the page linked to by the official QEMU site for the Windows pre-compiled binary downloads.

Hopefully this happens soon Smile

Erm.. changed the title?? What good is that!? And its good practice to upstream any changes to GPL apps, thats what makes the Open Source go-round. (At least then we might see a 'legally approved' version of the app and can start using it.)

But, tbh, why haven't you released a Developement Test?? You know how impatient we all are!

'Cleaning Up' the Code is one of the biggest things in coding history to cause delays it seems Blum

So please consider releasing a working binary (without any trademarked things in it preventing it from general usage) so we can start playing with it... Else I'm afraid we as well can download the original app and start using that and in a few weeks/months(/years?), or whenever a release materializes, switch to your version.

The

point is to make it easy to differentiate between the PortableApps.com version and other copies. And, like I said before, there are no upstream changes to be made, the app by itself is already portable, I simply recompiled it with the option to use the SDL sound rather than the closed source FMOD system, added an icon and changed the title. Don't get me wrong, I am hoping to upstream some changed to wxWidgets that Toucan uses (folder timestamp support on Windows specifically) but I really don't think there are any changes worth upstreaming, after all the code to add the icon is one line in the makefile, the title change is editing two strings in the source and SDL is already a compilation option.

I haven't released a Dev Test because it is not my app, I do not have the installer that will be used to distribute it with virtual disks and operating systems and such, I was simply asked to recompile it.

Like I said before, it is functionally identical to the available binaries, there is no real need to rush.

Well, after all the flaming

Well, after all the flaming the app got about the closed source component, it's obvious you have to try and submit the changes. Changing its name to a PortableApps branded version makes sure regular users are (yet again) not allowed to re-distribute the application due to trademarked material, forcing them to recompile the app from source. (ie. locking GPL'ed app which needed a improvement locking to some site for exclusive distribution.) Not all (Windows) users are able to compile apps from source. Don't force people to recompile apps Smile

Maybe you're not thinking upstreaming small changes are worth it, but I think it's worth it, seeing as these smaller changes make the integration of improvements even easier for the original devs.

I understand why you didn't released a test version, but rumors are that these changes were made already a while ago and still in limbo about whether or not anyone will see the application anytime soon.

Maybe the functionality is identical to the available binaries (which I thought were outdated since 2007) I remember some posts telling the devs to remove the closed source components because it was illegal. I don't know if these were removed, but looking at that it's apparent that there seems to be a need for a release.

Else people could just take the available Puppy linux and DS Linux and start using it legally today.

Hopefully we see a release of the app (and sourcecode) soon!

Lets

try this again, I have not changed QEMU to use open source components, it was always a compiler option, it is just simply that whoever distributes the Windows version has decided that they wanted to compile with a different option, the one to use the closed source FMOD engine for sound. There is no change to make here, the author of QEMU had designed it to be able to use a variety of different souds sources, I simply compiled it with an open source one in use.
As for the debate about branding, it is fairly clear to me that John is trying to build up a brand around here. In my mind it is not different to the way Mozilla protects its trademarks, the only difference here it that we are bundling an existing app, whereas they write there own, I would be quite happy to debate these points in another topic as I dont think this is appropriate for this conversation as it is a site wide thing.
Seems like I have made a little slip up here, I assumed that there were up to date windows binaries avalible, I would be quite happy to compile a non branded version with the latest source and for it to be used, if I can free up so time (I have exams in 5 weeks and Toucan 2 is sinking the rest of my time) I shall send to QEMU for Windows person an email. And yes these changes were made some time ago.

the updated binaries for

the updated binaries for windows are available through a link at this site, but the actual download is at this site.

Though I think I would trust the non-branded version from Steve a bit more lol Wink

qemumanager

I am using qemumanager. It`s a nice gui, Open Source, packaged together with qemu. Very nice.

It`s distributed also as a .zip archive and designed already with portable in mind. If you need any changes you can contact the author, he seams to be very nice.
