Sorry to reanimate this long-dead corpse, but it seemed like the closest match to my search.
I didn't find a hex editor plugin with NPP, so I downloaded the ANSI one from Sourceforge. I put HexEditor.dll in Notepad++Portable\App\Notepad++\plugins but it causes NPP to crash on startup. I also tried putting it in Notepad++Portable\Data\settings\plugins but it didn't seem to load at all (no crashing, not available in plugins menu). Did I install it incorrectly? Or is there a newer version of the dll?
(slaps own forehead) I should have upgraded first. I was running 5.1.1, and don't recall seeing the "(UNI)" label in the ? => About menu item, but upon installing 5.6.8 I noticed there are now two application directories, one for ANSI and the other for UNI. So I copied the ANSI version of HexEditor.dll into \Notepad++Portable\App\Notepad++_ansi\plugins and all is good.
I'm writing all this stuff that you already know in case someone else needs to search for it...

Notepad++ has a hex editor plugin that works quite well, too.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thought you said this was removed a few versions ago due to incompatibility....
It's currently incompatible with unicode stuff. If you don't use it, it works fine.

ANSI plugins are incompatible with the Unicode build of Notepad++.
