Portable applications for http transfers to web site.

I know the first thing you get blind on is your eyes, so I might have missed something on the portable applications web site. But is there a portable application for updating and transferring files for a web site that you have. I noticed that FilZilla Portable did not accept http transfers.
Would very much appreciate some help.
Many thanks
Tony

remote? or local web server?

I'm not sure what you are asking about. If the web server is on another machine, you most likely want to use FTP or (preferably) SFTP to upload the files to that machine, and FileZilla does both very well.

If you are using a web control panel to upload the pages, you can use Firebird.

If the web server is on your own machine, you can just drag and drop files into the folder that the web server is looking at -- its "document root".

If you don't have a web server on your machine and want one, you could try HFS Portable. It will let someone else download a file via HTTP from your machine, and if you work at it, it will let someone on another machine upload via HTTP also. It's still more efficient to use FTP or SFTP to upload files, but some people like to use a web form. If you are logged onto the machine, dragging and dropping via Explorer is even more efficient, once you figure out where the document root is.

There are a couple of gotchas with setting up your own web server on any machine. The main one is that the firewall needs to allow people from the Internet to connect to the machine running the web server, and a firewall's main purpose is to prevent things like that (so it needs to be told to make an exception). If the modem is connected to a router, in addition to the router's firewall accepting web server connections from the Internet, the router also has to forward those connections to the machine with the web server running on it. Neither of those settings is trivial, especially for people who don't do it all the time, and normally you need to be an administrator in order to do make them.

remote? or local web server?

Sorry for causing some trouble if I placed the question in the wrong category.
Basically I have a personal web site on my ISPs site and want to update it from time to time when new information comes to hand, using my USB drive. I am currently using a very simple program called FTP Commander form my home comoputer and wanted to do the same thing from my USB drive when travelling overseas.
Kind regards
Tony.

http transfers

You mentioned in your original post

I noticed that FilZilla Portable did not
accept http transfers.

Does FTP Commander not use the FTP protocol to upload files to your web site?

Perhaps you can clarify what your needs are. FileZilla Portable does support the FTP protocol, as well as the more secure SFTP. Are you sure that what you need is http? That is the protocol supported by Firefox, and is usually used for browsing the web, not uploading content to a web site.

If you are in fact using FTP Commander to upload files and you are not using the FTP protocol, could you clarify which protocol it is? Perhaps the support site for your web hosting provider has documents whose exact words you could share with us here to help us understand your needs.

http transfers

Thanks you for your comments and quick reply.

The problem is solved. I rang my ISP and asked if I can use FTP instead of http to upload changes to my web site (this is what I had in the FT Commander which I copied in to FilZilla) and they said that I could do this. I do not even have to put in FTP and it works. As I was used to put in http://, FilZilla did not accept this. So therefore I thought it did not work.

I do not know why the FT Commander accepted http:// but it worked, so therfore I thought I can use this in FilZilla, not knowing enought about these things.

I am now very happy that FilZilla works for me and thank you again for your kind assistance. I also think that I lerned something new now as well, thank you.

Very best regards
Tony
