How come john made apps for U3. On the forum description, (Which by the way, says it's only supposed to be for U3 apps like Firefox) says john made apps, aand the official site. Some wuotes from U3.
OpenOffice.org for U3 is the full-featured OpenOffice.org office suite packaged for U3 by John T. Haller of PortableApps.com.
Mozilla Thunderbird for U3 (PortableApps.com)
Mozilla Thunderbird for U3 is the easy-to-use Mozilla Thunderbird email client packaged for U3 by John T. Haller and supported by PortableApps.com. Mozilla Thunderbird for U3 is based on Portable Thunderbird.
Why did john help U3? Also, do the apps john made for U3 leave traces on the host PC. And if john knows U3 format, maybe a program can be made from a U3 app to a regular app.
In the beginning ...
There was peace on earth and in the portable applications world
John and U3 got along and were friendly.
Yes, John made apps for U3.
They had a parting of the ways
John felt they were too proprietary among other things.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
How can they keep the apps up to date if john isn't there to update them? And will these apps leave things behind? Why did John leave U3 and make his own site? Why doesn't Firefox link here if John made it? Can John make an app to turn U3 apps into regular apps? What other apps did john make for U3?

Blue is everything.
1. See above
Since they are open source anyone can write a launcher for them, and in the case of Mozilla, as long as they have permission to use the name/branding, which I believe U3 does.
Did you think John was the only one
2. If you mean personal data, It depends on the app but usually not.
I know that some of the trials leave a marker file on the host to let the app know how much of the trial is left, but if you mean personal data no.
U3 does leave behind it's "clean up" file and, depending on the version, an uninstaller file.
3. John did not leave U3, he was not part of them. He was contracted to portablize some apps for them. He had a site before his U3 work.
4. No/depends
a. it would violate the rights of the creators of those apps if they are not open source.
b. While some apps are portable to begin with and ported over to U3, others, usually the ones that are not free, are written to depend on U3 so they can't freely copied.
5. FFP, TBP, OO.oP

1. Yeah, but if they are updated, why do they still say John made them?
4. An app to make them compatable would not break any rules. Also, there are some free apps that were not made exlusivly for U3. Oh wait, then I could just download the regular version. (Runs to dark corner)

1. Dunno why. They arent allowed to say that but the do it anyway.

They are not. From memory John did FF 1.5(there was a link), someone else did 2.0.0.4 (which is the current one there and pretty buggy). I use the Smithtech program for the current FF portable from here. (and mainly because the U3 drive works on My work PC, but a normal USB one doesn't)
