Wierd Bug

I just let the firefox auto-update install version 2.0.0.14 and all of a sudden, firefox could not find any servers, including, but not limited to, mozilla.com and portableapps.com. I tried re-installing it by downloading the newest installer and it still doesn't work. I originally downloaded version 2.0.0.11 and it worked fine. Version 2.0.0.12 and 2.0.0.13 worked fine too, and they were installed by the firefox auto-update.

I also think that the update to 2.0.0.14 (I'm not sure if it was the auto-update or if it was the portable-apps installer) wiped out all of my plugins/extensions (They are not in the Data directory, but the Jars are in the plugins directory inside the normal firefox directory). I could not find the installer to install version 2.0.0.13 so I could revert to that (2.0.0.13 works fine for me). Could someone please either point me to the firefox portable 2.0.0.13 installer or tell me how to fix this?

One last thing. It might be because I just installed the newest Java Runtime Environment (this includes the JVM) and I uninstalled all of the older versions on my computer. Apparently this broke the ".jar" file association, and whenever IE 6 tries to load an applet, it crashes. The thing is, I apparently need to restart my computer to fix these bugs (the ones related the JVM/JRE), but I can't do that right now (just like I haven't been able to for the past few weeks). Might this be the cause of the problem? I am not sure because I already had 2.0.0.13 before I did this, but before I got 2.0.0.14. 2.0.0.13 was still working fine after I did this.
[edit] I rebooted my computer and figured out that the JVM/JRE has nothing to do with it

Anyways, I like being able to use firefox portable and I really don't want to revert to using the IE 6 browser my computer came with.

Will somebody please help me?

Clarification

Welcome PortaNerd to PortableApps.com

Your situation seems somewhat complex.
To bring everything to a level playing field you should reboot your computer.
Why can't you do a reboot?

Still doesn't work

I couldn't reboot because someone else was using the computer (they were logged on and had things running). I just got the OK to restart. FF portable still does not work. This rules out JVM/JRE issues (also because the ".jar" issue is fixed). I still do not know what is wrong. I checked the Add/Remove Programs dialog and it had niether FF (which is not installed on my computer), nor FF portable on there, which is how it is supposed to be. Is there anything else I can do?

Do NOT use the auto-update

Do NOT use the auto-update feature in any of the mozilla apps, it will corrupt a local installation, and redirect all profile and registry settings to the portable version. This is due to a bug in the newer versions of Mozilla's updater, and they are currently working on a fix. You will have to reinstall your local thunderbird install, and it is recommended to download the individual apps you want, because the Suite is very outdated. Also, use the latest beta test release of the menu, it's more stable than the version currently packed with the Suite, and has more features.

That doesn't fix anything

I used the auto-update to get version 2.0.0.12 and 2.0.0.13 and they worked fine. Is this bug recent?

I tried reinstalling using the PAF installer, but it still does not work.

I am using PAM 1.1 beta 4.

I know ... now how do I fix it

I know that it breaks the local install. The question I would like to answer now is: how do I fix it?

the fix is

reinstall the local copy. I dont think you have to do anything with your portable copy but you could update it to 2.0.0.14 while you're at it ;).

no it isn't

I don't have a local normal FireFox install.

I updated my copy of FFP first with auto-update, then the problem started occuring, then I tried reinstalling it with the most recent PA.com installer.
It still does not work.

???

I have no idea what that has to do with it since I have no copy of Firefox installed locally

[edit much much later]
I still don't know what it has to do with it, but I know what "corrupting the locally installed copy of Firefox" means. See post below (More new info)

See, mozilla not allowing

See, mozilla not allowing PortableApps to disable auto update untill they fix it makes Mozilla, FireFox, FireFoxPortable look bad.

Comon FireFox people, let us disable the autoupdate or fix that problem.

New info

I just realized that I have a copy of 2.0.0.13 on my USB stick that I did not update, but I have not used it in a while and I am not sure how I will keep settings and other things like that.

The copy of 2.0.0.14 that is screwed up is on my computer's hard drive, and I am pretty sure there are some location specific settings in FFP.

I do not know what I should do about this.

More new info

I tried installing FF3rc1 on my computer (a local copy) just a few days ago. It did not work.
I tried using my backed up copy of FFP 2.0.0.13 and it worked fine. I uninstalled FF3 because it would not work (I installed it and uninstalled it a few times). I even ran the uninstaller in the FF package in the copy of FFP that does not work.

I was really sick of using IE but I could not install FF2 on my computer (I need special permission from my dad to use the administrator account), and FF3 would not work on my computer.
So I finally just copied the FF package in the backed up copy of FFP to my local computer ("C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox") and the data\settings to where normal FF usually stores it ("C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\FireFox") after deleting the FF3 settings from it.
So I am now using the FFP backup as a local FF.

A few questions:

It wants me to update to FF 2.0.0.14, what should I do?

  • Will it corrupt it, even though I am now using it as a copy of normal FF?
  • Do I need to use the FFP 2.0.0.14 installer and then do the same thing as I did before (copy the included normal FF package)?
  • Is there anything else I should take into consideration?

This is probably going to be one of my last posts here. I might still download another copy of FFP just for generic use on the computers at school.
