Wesnoth Portable

Battle of Wesnoth

The Wesnoth Launcher is a simple launcher allowing the Battle of Wesnoth to appear in the PortableApps Menu. The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme. I am currently looking at a script for a complete release, but with time issues and a few snags I am releasing it like this for the time being. So those of you wanting to play it whilst incorporating it into the PortableApps.com Platform can do so.

As the main program is quite large I have released three variants, the basic launcher, an English game and a multilingual game. So if you already have the game you can just copy the main folder into the launcher or the main of your usb drive. If you don't then you can download whichever game link you prefer.

Wesnoth Launcher 1.2.6 D/L 156KB

Wesnoth English 1.2.6 D/L 56.9MB

Wesnoth Multilingual 1.2.6 D/L 66.3MB

When I get a bit more available time I will rework my script for the complete release, same goes with Stellarium. When they have been done and dusted I can revisit my other apps and clean them up, adding the new style help file for each as I do. Then when they are out the way, I can finish the site - woo-hoo!

Cool.

I'll test it.

This would be nice in the Games Edition of my Suites

Since I play this all the time and enjoy it. I even develop campaigns for it.

Well, I've analysed this and find that it is both clean and working from my end. No registry keys of a personal nature created (but many are accessed) and files are self-contained. Nicely done.

As for the game, I'm unsure, but I'm more of an FPS player anyway Biggrin

Yeah...

I kinda noticed with it having an NSIS installer that pointed to the current directory to "install" (extract) to. I was speaking purely on the launcher... Hence I said, I don't know about the game...

Wesnoth 1.4

Wesnoth 1.4 was released, and the installer alone is 130 megs! The download for the game here is 50 megs. I'm curious what was removed and/or compressed, and if they'd be able to do the same to 1.4

I will install the game, and poke around seeing how small I can get it myself.

Edit: A few small obvious files can be deleted (uninstall data, help files, po files, etc) and I'm sure I can run the png files through an optimizer. However the new version has more campaigns, more images, and tons more music. The core music folder is over 75 megs by itself.

I'm wondering if there is a good way to re-encode or compress ogg files? I can experiment with it and see how much it affects the sound quality.

Nihilism makes me smile.

Bump...

Anyone interested in trying to do the new version, and shrink it down a bit?

No Interest

It appears that there has been no interest in this since August of 2007.

It doesn't look like repeated bumping is going to change that.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

While 'interest' might be

While 'interest' might be low in case of responding, it would be nice to see this updated to the latest version anyway. Keeping a released app (or game) up to date is useful to those who download it. (I am sure some people download and don't bother with replying to the threads).

While the problem with games is that they are usually big, I'm sure there is a 'market' for portable games.

Sorry

Sorry I am a little late in replying, but interest has dropped on this. Due to other commitments I have I have been focusing on the more popular applications I have released in the past. I do play Wesnoth occasionally and when life quietens down A little I will revisit this properly.

Wesnoth is portable on it's own, so you can just run it from your drive anyway. It doesn't integrate with the PA menu though because there are too many executables in the main folder.
