I was (and currently am) using 2.0.0.13, which works just fine, without any problems, but was getting annoyed with the periodic and relentless reminders to upgrade to 14, so I did.
I just downloaded the new Firefox, Portable Edition 2.0.0.14 to my desktop and ran the installer. It created a folder on my desktop named FirefoxPortable. Opening the folder, I see the FirefoxPortable.exe executable, and when double-clicked, the splash-screen pops up - and then goes away. Firefox doesn't start.
Having the Task Manager running during this process, I see the Firefox entry appear, and then disappear. This doesn't happen when I start version .13 - the Firefox entry appears and stays past the splash screen and after the application starts.
For all you sticklers out there, I'm running this on XP, and with way more than enough memory & processor speed for it to work if it was going to. And, after all, version .13 works, so...
I've updated to .14 at home, which works fine, but that was not the portable version. I haven't tried "installing" the portable version at home to see if I have the same problem.
I guess for now I'll have to continue using .13 and just grit my teeth when it keeps asking me to upgrade to .14, unless someone has a fix or knows what the problem is.
Thanks for your help...
I have the same problem with Firefox Portable, though it is not only with the last release but it is a more general problem. I have had no problem with other portable apps, but using Firefox Portable on my company's laptop appears not possible.
My case is exactly the aforementioned. It looks correctly installed, so I run the executable file, in the task manager appears FirefoxPortable.exe, it is shown the splash screen, and then the process disappears.
Any suggestions?
I tried executing the exe under the apps/firefox folder and the result was a message saying it had been restricted the execution of firefox.exe by a Software Restriction Program. So, taking into account that I cannot execute a file named "firefox.exe", is there any way to change the executable name and make it work properly?
Thanks,
Rename FirefoxPortable/App/Firefox/firefox.exe to FirefoxPortable/App/Firefox/[anything_u_want].exe
Copy the FirefoxPortable/Other/Source/FirefoxPortable.ini to FirefoxPortable/FirefoxPortable.ini
Edit the file: Leave all existing lines in the file, do not delete any. Change the FirefoxExecutable=firefox.exe to FirefoxExecutable=[name_of_renamed_file].exe
Launch FirefoxPortable.exe again

I almost thought it was going to work, the splash screen looked like it was displaying for longer than before, but no such luck - right after that thought zipped through my head, it terminated (confirmed by watching Windows TaskManager).
Tried installing the non-portable application to my work machine (stole the Administrator password - sneaky devil that I am...) and got the "Windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy."
Funny how version 2.0.0.13 runs perfectly fine with the EXACT SAME FILENAME, but .14 won't.
I've even tried running as administrator. Still doesn't work. Right now I don't have Firefox, but at least I can use IE (sigh).
Now that Thunderbird's doing the same thing, I CAN'T get to my e-mails I've already downloaded.
I'm having the same problem. The only thing I can think of is that I'm using a computer that I don't normally use. I tried the file renaming suggestion but I still have the same problem. Anyone have any other ideas? I'm not able to get online with my usual pc's at the moment otherwise this wouldn't matter. Thanks.
And if you try Thunderbird, you'll have the same issue. Seems to have started after a bunch of Vista downloads yesterday.
I noticed today that this is happening to me on my Vista with SP1 which just got loaded. I'm using IE to enter this info, since Firefox doesn't work. Oh, and my Thunderbird Portable doesn't work now either. Please help!
I'm having the same problem with Vista and SP1, both with Thunderbird and with Firefox. Is anyone working on this? Connie
I tried renaming and it works... at least the browser starts. My problem now is that on my company it is used some kind of proxy. I do not know how to configure my firefox settings to make it work. Any help? Maybe not the right forum?
Thanks!
Finally I figured out how to get the proxy settings, so it works for me! Now I can use firefox at work, which is much safer than ie, and noone will notice 'cause i use a ie7 theme.
Thanks a lot!
Hi, just wanted to share something weird. As I said before, now I have it working perfectly on my company laptop. However, I tried it with wine on my ubuntu 7.10 and asked me for firefox.exe.
Then I tried with Virtual Box, in which I have a Windows XP SP2 virtualized and did not work either. So, weir, isn't it??
BTW, does anyone know how to associate VLC Portable with Firefox Portable?
Thanks!
So I did the same thing for Firefox that I did for Thunderbird. I renamed the original folder, then downloaded the Firefox installer and ran it, then copied the data folder from the original Firefox location. Voila - Firefox works fine and all my old links, passwords, loaded websites, etc., returned.
