Speed of PortApps?

Hi.. I'm pretty new here.. and I checked whole forum, dl the apps put them on my brand new usb flesh pocket thingy and get dissapointed by speed... I have no idea why but all apps are slow as hell (on the other side from pc itself it's fast as hell but who cares about pc).. they are simply useless.. all of them.. I wait like 20-25s to FF just to load, 10sec to check email in TB, I'm not mentioning OOO, etc. etc... So.. Is my USB flesh shitty? Is USB 2.0 shitty? Am I shitty? Are all portApps shitty? What's wrong with it? The whole idea of portable life don't work... what to do? Thank you for answers and no offence anyone..

Most likely, your flash drive is slow

Personally, I have seen drives with speeds (measured, not quoted) ranging from 2MB/s to 25MB/s

That is a speed difference of well more than 10 times.

Always, the cheap, no-name ones are the slowest, and, as has been said before around here, bigger drives tend to be somewhat slower than smaller drives due to the way the controllers work.

My personal drive, which is a Sandisk Cruzer Mini 8GB is close to the fast end of the range I've seen, and I paid the equivalent of about $50 for it. I've got another 8GB drive on my desk which was around $25, which is almost the slowest one I've seen, running at about 3.5GB/s

According to the spec, USB 2.0 can run at 480Mbit/s, which is 60MB/s, which is way faster than any flash drive.

The hard drive in my laptop, for comparison, can run at a sustained 45MB/s, which is close to twice the speed of the faster USB flash drives, but still less than USB 2.0 is capable of.

Basically, when it comes to flash drive performace, you get what you pay for. The good makes may cost more, but they are so much faster that it is the difference between completely usable for Portable Apps, or only good for keeping backups on.

What make and model of drive do you have?

Its not the apps....

....its your drive. If you want portableapps to run well you need a fairly fast usb drive (the read and write speeds). Otherwise ya it will be a bit slow.

Well,

Usually if it is 10 MB per seconds, it should run as if it was on the harddrive.

Drive Speed

Hey BlackFlag. Usually, speed issues are related to drive speed. Flash drives, as a whole, are slower than hard drives. Noticeably. So, a portable app will be slower than a regular one. We do our best to optimize them (disabling cache since it actually slows the app down on flash, compressing the EXEs and DLLs so they load faster, etc) but you'll still notice a difference.

You can compensate a bit by having a good flash drive. Unfortunately, it's tough to determine whether it is good without using it. Memory size, configuration and speed as well as controller type and number all play a factor. The best sticks use high speed flash ram in a good arrangement along with a dual channel controller. We don't have many reviews around but are working on a hardware section to provide more details.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
