Thanks,

Tim

pi is a non-terminating

pi is a non-terminating number, there are an infinite number of digits

You've spoiled it now

That could have kept him busy counting for hours!

A better question is how many digits of PI actually matter?

For example, what level of precision is needed to calculate the circumference of the biggest circle you could fit into the (visible) universe, to an accuracy of measurement down to, say, the diameter of a hydrogen atom? And the answer may be smaller than you'd think Blum

he asked how many digits of

he asked how many digits of pi would be needed to get a level of accuracy where the difference between the calculated value and actual value only has an error equal to the diameter of a hydrogen atom

You

know I was just about to work this out, but given that the universe is thought to be expandung, what to I take to be its diameter?

well it was specified that it

well it was specified that it should be the biggest circle that can exist in the VISIBLE universe, so I don't think the issue of expansion matters in this case.

well, a quick google shows

that the most distant object ever observerd is in the region of 14 billion light years away, so that would be a good figure to take as a radius.

Thirty-six

digits I think Smile

I figured it like these, please tell me if I am wrong Smile

Radius of an atom = 5.00E-11
Radius of the universe = 1.32E+26

Taking Pi as 3 calculates the size to three value (792E+24) To get to minus eleven we need another thirty five digits, plus the original 3 makes thirty six Smile

yep, somewhere around that :)

Like I said, not really that many digits, when you think about how many million digits people have spent computer time calculating it to....

You mean

trillions. One group used a supercomputer and found out 1.26 trillion digits.
Here, read this (no, I got it from the local library up 206 and down 510

He didn't count

He didn't count Blum

I'm not sure what method he used but there is in fact a user 70209 !!

I'm thinking that there are numbers that are blocked or retired for various reasons.

The newest user as of earlier this evening was user 77739 [jalanbesi]

Still, he was off by several thousand Blum
But then again, he did say over 70209 Wink

Actually...

It would appear that's the number of users who've actually posted to the forums.

If you could find an exact

If you could find an exact number of registered users and the average number daily guest visits and and the average number of users registering daily, you could do some number work to create some pretty impressive growth figures.

If you guys were ever interested you could use this maybe as one of the many selling points for PA for a grant or something? Not to turn it into a commercial enterprise (I pray you always stay free and open)but to find funding to expand. Maybe buy permissions to port certain apps or other stuff.

Maybe something to think about?
