I've been taking a look at the various PAM-mod themes that are available. Seems like some themes use non-white backgrounds but don't bother with transparency of folder icons and application icons. Others seem to do pretty well with this, and others seem to try transparency but leave a jagged white border around the icon itself.
Can anybody tell me why some themes are more successful than others? Are there different methods to hammer a square peg into a round hole? Would it help to start with application icons that already have transparent properties? That way, it wouldn't matter so much about the theme coding...

change/ fill in the code for app buttons to
sometimes the icons don´t look fine when you change the transparent colour from 206 (= white) to 255 (= transparent)

Great! That did make a difference on the skin I tried. Unfortunately, it is as you say - the icons didn't look fine. There's a jagged (white?) border around the application icons. I'm assuming that's because the icons have a shadowed border or a transition that isn't caught by the transparent effect? It is more apparent against darker backgrounds.
I had the same complaint when I started using non-white backgrounds on my Palm. Chunky white squares around the icons. Ended up using a resource editor to make the icons in each application transparent (if the author hadn't already taken care of this detail). Later found a color-UI editor that also edited application icons and took care of transparency on any icon with one click. Sweet!
