Running Java in FF

I'm certainly low on the tech pole so I generally need things spelled out to me very clearly. Sorry. I am trying to run a game in Portableapps' FireFox that requires Java. I would like to have it on my USB so I can play it at work (which doesn't allow Java on the comps). Can this happen so it can solely run off of my flash drive? And if so, how?

Thanks for any help!!!!

unfortunetly no, Firefox

unfortunetly no, Firefox looks for a specific registry key telling it if Java is installed or not Sad

Is there any way of downloading Java onto the flashdrive and telling FF to look on the flashdrive for the registry key?

Not easily. John is the

Not easily. John is the expert. I seem to recall someone saying that Firefox refuses to look anywhere but in the registry to find Java, and a number of entries at that which all have to be set up exactly. Evidently it would be quite difficult to have the FF launcher set up all those registry entries to point to the USB stick, then convert them all back to the way they were before. Another downside is if the power fails the registry settings are stuck pointing to the USB stick, which might very well not be there any more.

On other platforms it is enough that the java executable be on the path or that an environment variable be set; unfortunately, Mozilla chose to tie FF to the Registry instead of making it optional (or at least that is my understanding).

As far as using a custom registry on the USB stick -- that requires more sophisticated programming than is currently available for PortableApps. Windows tends to consider the registry a sacred object, and makes it hard, especially for mere mortals, to redirect from the "real" registry to a custom one.

You could try dabbling with

You could try dabbling with JauntPe ( http://portablefreeware.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=10 )

It's a wrapper which redirects registry calls to a local ini file instead.

Java installed - not recognized by FFP

Hello world,

my question is related but more specific: My company uses IE6 on XP Pro. FFP om my personal network drive works fine - just without JAVA (i.e. http://maps.google.com/ does not show a map). But the IE uses Java and everything is fine.

I made this experience at another 2 companies before.

Does FFP need something special?

Thanks,

Clemens

Java vs MS Java, perhaps?

You may have the MS Java VM on that machine. Microsoft created a purposely-incompatible Java Virtual Machine quite some time ago to try to prevent Java from becoming more widespread. Sun sued them and won and that JVM is no long distributed (it was last distributed with XP SP1). But it's still sitting there on many corporate PCs in all its buggy glory and still in use within Internet Explorer.

Firefox can not use this version of Java. It can use the real Java Virtual Machine from Sun Microsystems. It's best to remove the MS Java VM and install Sun's since Microsoft's is no longer supported (even for security fixes) and doesn't work with a good chunk of modern Java software.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Possible workaround?

I seem to remember an about:config preference string named java.default_java_location_others that could tell FF where to look if you had java installed in a weird place. I've been tinkering with it trying to get it to work but so far no luck, but I am hardly an expert with FF. Can any of my betters here tell me if I'm on the right track or a dead end?

If your company doesn't allow

If your company doesn't allow Java on its computers, it might be wise not to use Java on their computers.

On the other hand ...

Is the java game one that you might be able to download a copy and run it locally, instead of it being only in your browser? If that's the case, the launcher I've been working on can likely start it (outside the browser) using Java installed on the local drive according to John's standard for OpenOffice.

Correct

Thanks for making the reference a bit closer. It's possible to get even closer.

It's worth point out, however, that John has not yet been able to make Firefox work with that Java setup. So while that link will allow you to have Java with you for OOo and a few other applications, it won't work for Firefox (last time I checked).

harsh tone wasn't intended.

harsh tone wasn't intended. sorry.

Can a mod delete everything below this comment?

While i can understand how YourNewFriend misinterpreted my tone, and his response seemed a little harsh, it really doesnt warrant everybody attacking him for it.

PS. Tim, buddy, lighten up a bit. I've noticed your posts have been becoming more and more attack-like lately, rather than just explanatory.

It's worth point out, however, that John has not yet been able to make Firefox work with that Java setup.

This shows it does not work with FFP.

Well, obviously I thought there was (and I'm not interested in what you think, nor your rules) - however I would have deleted the message again if that was possible.

And second, the guy who posted the link says that it DOES work with FF

Spare Us Your Mouth ! I read

Spare Us Your Mouth !

I read the comment you are replying to also.
There is no "tone" in it, unless you choose to interpret,

"read" as "red" instead of "reed",
That was your choice.

But even if he had said "red",

It's not like he said,
"look, you stupid idiot, if you if you had read the comment ..."

Try reading it again,

"If you reed his comment, it says to scroll about ..."

There is not a tone, it is a matter of fact statement.

If you have any maturity at all you would have realized that you should not be using that language in these forums, there are young people here, but more importantly you would have realized that it would get a reaction, come back, seen the reaction, and apologized, and ask a moderator to edit your post.

As you have not done so, I have done it for you.
I don't think the group needs a friend like you, new or otherwise Sad

Hopefully I will feel differently in the future

Zach, you have nothing to be sorry for.

"There is no "tone" in it,

"There is no "tone" in it, unless you choose to interpret,

"read" as "red" instead of "reed","

??? I read it as "read" - and I'm not interested in your opinion.

"There is not a tone"

Sure there is, he is suggesting i didn't read it.

"If you have any maturity at all you would have realized that you should not be using that language in these forums, there are young people here,"

Utter rubbish. You attack me for getting annoyed over a words yet you get totally hysterical about an innocent word - people are dying of war and famine, and we are busy screwing up the planet and you get worked up over a harmless word. So what if children read it - it will do them no harm at all. if you think so you have a problem, not I.

"but more importantly you would have realized that it would get a reaction, come back, seen the reaction, and apologized, and ask a moderator to edit your post."

1. I have absolutely nothing whatsoever to apologize for.
2. It never occurred to me that anybody would be this hysterical that it should be required to contact a moderator - not until i happened to look back at this thread at which point i might have deleted the message if the board supported that.

"As you have not done so, I have done it for you."

You forgot the subject - better fix that so your fantasy world is bit safer.

"I don't think the group needs a friend like you, new or otherwise :-("

Don't fret, you are clearly not someone I'd want as a friend if you get this hysterical over something irrelevant. I'm leaving.

(And Zach, you'll notice I didn't attack you - i was just fuming for a bit - which i suppose wasn't quite necessary, but as the moderator here seems to think getting angry over words is quite all right - as long as you can agree on what words are ooh so dangerous)

People like you are so annoying....

STOP your childish ranting. You remind me of a 10 year old kid having a fit when he couldn't have a candy bar.

Nobody "contacted" a moderator. He was made a moderator because he's so active in the forums, development, and that he's one of the oldest members around.

So please shut your mouth, get on with your life, and go away.
