(Closed) Please vote for or against changes to OpenOffice.org Portable

Hello @all,
we are thinking about some changes to OpenOffice.org Portable, but we want to know
how the community is thinking about it.

Please vote with +1 (pro) -1 (contra)

- remove all additional launchers (writerportable.exe and so on) to save space in
menu and use the new OpenOfficePortable startcenter instead
- create / publish language packs for all requested languages (means more than
5 requests for a language and OpenOffice.org language packs are available)
- create / publish the installer with optional components (at first one option for a
light install)

My 2 cents
  • remove all additional launchers (writerportable.exe and so on) to save space in
menu and use the new OpenOfficePortable startcenter instead

    • -1 points Don't like it, it takes more time to launch an app, and it would be worse on old PCs, even though it would be nice to have less mess on the menu, so my advice is an option in the installer for that
  • create / publish language packs for all requested languages (means more than
5 requests for a language and OpenOffice.org language packs are available)

    • +1 points (but with conditions) only if you say 10 or 15 people minimum, only that way I will agree
  • create / publish the installer with optional components (at first one option for a
    light install)

    • +1 points But keep sure there is an option for "Regular user Install" and "Advanced user install" for those extra options (excepting Light Install)

These are my 2 cents.

Edited second opinion

My Input

-1 Users should have the option, they can delete the additional launchers if they don't want them. Also with the new menu supposed to be adding category support they can make a category for OO.
+1 All the apps should be published with as many languages as possible.
+1 Install options are always a plus.

+1 My menu is getting crowded and this would make it easier to find things.
+1 English is the only language I want but it wouldn't be fair to others who use a different language and could make OpenOffice less attractive, resulting in fewer users.
+1 Personally, I wouldn't want or use OpenOffice if I couldn't have the full meal deal, but I realize that a light install could benefit some users. I just hope that the full version remains available.

Remove all launchers:

Remove all launchers: -1
Create language packs for all requested lanuages: +1 but, only if I can install JUST english. By including all languages, portable apps managed to waste about 25 mb of my drive.
Create publish the installer with optional components: +1

I'd like to see each language its own installer option.

I agree with everything, but I think that the first change should be an option in the installer. Because, not everyone will want a universal launcher. It's sometimes convenient to have each launcher.

More languages are always better for our users.

Customization is always a welcome addition.

So, there's my two cents on that.

? I haven't used the new
  • ? I haven't used the new Startcenter yet so I cant say anything here. For now I think the multiple starters work well and do their job. I deleted the ones I don't need so its not that much space wise and I can always get them back if I need them. And if Categorising is implemented, space wont be a biggie anymore either.
  • +1 If its not too much work I support that. I guess the packs wont be the full package but rather like Add ons and available as separate downloads. At least thats what I'd do. And I would set the number higher.
  • +1 Definitively. Packing the light version as an option into the main package (thats how I understood Marko) is good.

The last option is probably harder to implement. Several localizations could be useful, but not critical, at least for me.

-1 I like having only one item for OOP in my menu, but I still want to be able to associate files with the individual/appropriate OOP app/exe.

+1 installing dictionaries etc is not straight forward, so having language packs that is easy to add/install would be much appreciated

+1 as long as I can still have my "full fat" version

Err.

Not everyone speaks English. That's why we want to make more localizations available for OpenOffice.org Portable. From what I understand, the extra languages would be optional, like in the latest version of GIMP.

+1 - I would like the option as well to select all launchers. Speed is not an issue for me as I run mine from the HD anyways then back it up to a flash drive and an iPod.

+1 - Smaller is more better gooder. Less languages means better and faster.

+1 - I opt for a full install myself but having the option to doa lite or what have you install would be nice for my UBCD4Win disk.

-1 I want seperate launchers,

-1 I want seperate launchers, this has to be much faster than first loading a startcenter. Besides I would loose the ability to portable associate extensions with tools like CAFE to link to individual applications within the suite. At the moment I click one of the tools in OOo I already know what I need and having a startcenter start first would waste my time. And even if most people want the start center, make it optional! Crowding the PA menu is secondary problem as categories was promised to be coming soon long ago!

+1 Publishing language packs would be ok. But make sure they are going to be paf.exe files as well for easy installation in correct places. Don't bother (us) with a zip Smile Keeping in mind that most people only use one or two languages (ie English and their native language). But I personally feel its more important for spellcheckers than GUI language.

+1 I think having a Light and Full install is okay. As long as you don't start shelving out separate downloads for them. It might even include some languages for that matter. Standard selection should be Full and English language.

On a separate note, I think having the PAF.EXE installer optionally installing additional language for all apps is preferred over just installing all languages, even if it's only 1+ MB worth of data installed.

I think that the best solution would be to implement folders/categories in the menu. But untill that gets implemented leave it like it is.

I would suggest that the installer gives the user these options, especially regarding languages (because dictionary files are HUGE). It would be nice not to install dictionaries you don't want (I delete them myself).

My 2 Cents

You don't need to worry about the extra launchers. An upcoming feature in the menu will handle it perfectly (the user gets to choose). The appinfo.ini as configured in the current release already has all the info it needs to do it.

Does OOo itself do language packs? They should. They we could have a multilingual installer that does em.

On the optional bit... are you sure you can handle all the work required for the light build in addition to main with all the additional languages?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thank You for Your 2 Cents ;-)

1. Good to know, so this point in no question any longer

2. OOo do language packs and I use them as base for the packages (You can't use it direct cause they write a lot of stuff to the machine). A multilang installer for this is a good idea.

3. All the packages will come from only one repository (so it is one task to create the repository for each update), so we have to built, compress, check each file once (no double work for the packages, only different/additional files makes more work).

BTW: Dictionaries as one ob the biggest part of OOo will come up to to version 3 as extensions for OOo. So there is a built in function to add/remove them. If we remove the additional image packages as default too(the most users never use them) and offer them as extension too we will have a smart solid package, and a light version is no longer a task for the installers.

All this are ideas to check it out. The reason for the vote call is simple ... is it worth to work on it, is it wanted only by some geeks ore of a lot of users.
The focus should ever be (for OOo too)on smart and stable packages. If the new built process works as planed its no more work as creating all native lang packages separately. I'll give it a try for the Beta (as play ground) but only if a quick an stable work is garantied it is an option for a release.

Don't give a rip...

...about any of the things you have listed one way or the other, so I have no votes to cast on the ideas raised.

So far, I have only one major beef about Oo, and THAT is what I would like to see folks vote on - if enuff votes, mebbe it could get incorporated into a future Oo release:

I would like to see Oo use MDI - Multiple Document Interface.
That way, I could read/edit/ work on a # of docs at the same time, all in ONE program window...

I'm so used to MDI when browsing the web, working on text files, viewing PDFs, etc., that I view it as an absolute ESSENTIAL!!!

How 'bout it?... Any others wanna weigh in on this ossible assition to Oo?...

Please keep in mind ...

dictionaries are not part of the OpenOffice.org language packs at the moment!

The language packs includes the language specific ressources (descriptions, menu entries, help files and so on) but no dictionary, spell check an hyphenation.

In version 2.x most of the dicts came with OOo (only some dics dont because of license reasons).
A list of dics for it You can found on: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries

Up to version 3 the dics comes (with the installer packages) as extensions. A list of seperate available extension dictionaries is here :
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/search/node/dictionary?

The next version of OOo Portable (3 Beta 2) will come with en, de, fr, it and es dics as extensions on board.
