Portable Universal PIM?

I don't have a palm pilot, so my thumbdrive is my main source for keeping information on me.

Is there a small Personal Info manager to use for keeping an address book (phone numbers, email addresses, etc.

It would be awesome if it could sync (or at least import/export) with:

-Thunderbird
-Outlook
-Cell Phonebook
-etc.

If the database could export as a simple text, html, or XML file for online backup and web access, that would be great too.

Is there anything out there with most/all of these functions?

Thanks,
chris.

They should add that to Sunbird

I would use Sunbird all the time if it had those features built in. The first time i fired it up i looked for a address book spot, but couldent find it.

Why? Sunbird is a calendar

Why?

Sunbird is a calendar application, if you want PIM use thunderbird... it makes sense to have an address book in an email program...

Also remember Sunbird is still in the very early stages.

I dont need an eMail client

For me, having an adress book and some sort of note taking system built in with a calender app that i can cary on a small thumb drive would be great. That would pretty much replace a $100 PDA. If im at a computer that has internet access, im not going to fire up Thunderbird, ill gust go to Gmail and read my mail.

Thunderbird & Sunbird or Lightning

Right now, Thunderbird does email and handles your address book. Sunbird handles appointments and tasks. There is a calendar extension that add's Sunbird's bits to either Thunderbird or Firefox, but it's essentially a separate program and doesn't integrate (it just adds a menu item). Lightning is the next generation of the calendar extension and it will add integrated calendar and tasks to Thunderbird. There are some test versions of it out if you're interested.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Lightning

Hi John,

I have downloaded the Lightning extension for Thunderbird which looks very interesting, if a bit limited in customisable options.

If installed in PTT is the calendar totally portable?

Thanks,

Roger

EssentialPIM ?

There is a program called EssentialPIM ( v1.8 ) available in pay and free versions, and each of those versions in desktop and portable versions.

It does scheduling, contacts, to do lists, and notes, and it takes up around 2.5 MB.

The free, portable version...
"Data can be exported to and imported from HTML, RTF, CSV, TXT and TreePad. Complete synchronization with MS Outlook and easy import from Outlook Express"
(I have noted that it didn't handle recurring tasks imported from Outlook, but that was in an earler version...)

May or may not meet exactly what you were looking for, but worth a look.

careful about Outlook synchronization

I looked into EPIM and found that only Pro version will synchronize with Outlook. The free version only imports Outlook into what evercalendar program you're using. This was no good for me as my work calendar is in Outlook and everytime I tried an import some events were duplicated, recurring events didn't show at all and deleted events weren't.

Yeah, it isn't perfect when it comes to Outlook

Yeah, it isn't perfect when it comes to Outlook. If I recall correctly, it took the first occurence of a recurring event but that was it, so I had to edit these to make it recurring. For me, the only recurring appointments I have in EssentialPIM are for birthdays/anniversaries, school classes, and holidays, and am somewhat coservative about entering non-recurring events, so it's tolerable to tweak it. If you are a moderate to heavy user of Outlook for planning, etc., then the free version will be a pain to try to use.

Overall, I find EssentialPIM quite useful for my thumbdrive, but would use a Palm (or similar) device for clean and fully featured synching with Outlook.
