I'm a freshman at Cogswell Polytechnical College in Sunnyvale, California majoring in Digital Art & Animation. I want to specialize in 3D modeling, yet there's a ton of prereqs in order to begin modeling classes. Screw curriculum hierarchies, I'm gonna teach myself for now. As Softimage|XSI and Maya are expensive packages to get my hands on for learning, I've started using Blender.
During off-time at school in between classes, I want to use school computers to practice more on Blender, yet you need administrative privilages to install Blender and python, and frankly it's going to piss the IT guys off if I'm installing Blender on the Photoshop lab computers and so on.
Would it be possible to get Blender working as a portable application I can carry with me on my flash drive so I can use it on school computers? That would really come in handy for me if a portable version were released.
EDIT: Wait, it doesn't require admin rights. Download the Windows ZIP version and copy the folder in the zip archive right to a thumb drive. Works right out of the box.
Be careful. It may still be writing its settings and such to the local machine (registry, [userprofile]\Application Data, etc.), which the "IT guys" won't like, either.

This is a portable version of the Blender tool, as certified by PortableFreeware:

if you use yafray instead of internal render, blender is not a portable one. although you can supply yafray's paramters for installation path via command line, blender does not do so, however blender read the registry for this setting.
I hate such a program style, who always use registry info.
Well, for a program to be multiuser-aware, it has to either write to the registry or store its settings files in %APPDATA%. Use of the registry, then, isn't a design fault per se; it just prevents the program from being truly portable. There's nothing inherently "bad" about a program writing to the registry.

if u download the zip version there should be a a new folder ".blender" (folder not extension) and in documentation it says that it either stores settings in the registry and your appdata folder or u have a ".blender" folder it will store settings there correct me if im wrong
