PortableApps.com CD - Worldwide Delivery...

Hi everyone,

We, The Rozaleenda Group, Inc., global provider of Web, Media, Software, E-Business, TV and Telecom solutions, want to distribute PortableApps.com products (specially full PortableApps.com Suite) in high-quality retail-ready CD-ROM around the world, and in INDIA (since we are based in India). We can market worldwide via internet and ship to many major countries with a very low shipping cost. And, we can market PortableApps.com in India regionally, by providing CDs to various retail stores etc.

We want to create a CD product with full version of 'PortableApps.com Suite', as well as all the other PortableApps.com software that are currently available in your web site, as well as in the 'Forums' section. This would make a complete CD for everyone, I guess.

I want to know, what is the process of become an PortableApps.com partner like the above way. We also want to include various 'Extras' (Add-ins and Add-ons) available in your web site.

The CDs we will distribute will have the following...

-- High-Quality CD Media
-- Duplication/Replication (Content/Artwork Provided By You)
-- Full-Color On-Disc Printing
-- DVD Amaray Case (It looks better than CD Jewel Case)
-- Full-Color 1-Panel Insert
-- Full-Color DVD Case Cover (Including Spine)
-- Cellophane Wrapping
-- UPC Bar Code (Included)

Please let me know the following...

-1. Can we fit the product 'PortableApps.com Suite - Full' in 1 CD? I don't need other languages (apart from English), for now. What will be the total file size?

-2. Any company who is currently distributing 'PortableApps.com Suite' as CD in various countries, what they are charging for the main CD? Approximate in US Dollars? Please give us an idea.

-3. To write in the 'Back Cover' of the case/cover and in the 'Inlay Card', what texts & screen shots should we use? I also need the artworks (if you have any).

--------------------------------

Please let us know your valuable comments about our above proposal.

Everyone, please post your suggestions and questions below.

With best regards,

Yes, but there are restrictions...

All of the applications distributed by PortableApps.com are under OSI-approved open source licenses. This means that they their source code is available for viewing or modifications, and that they can be freely distributed.

The PortableApps.com Suite installer is currently under 120MB, which will easily fit on a CD. However, I myself would also recommend including all the installers of the individual applications. These currently come to just under 700MB, including the Suite installer as well, which is fine for storing on a CD. The issue then with that is that more and more apps are being released, and I should say it will probably be less than a few months before they will no longer fit onto a 700MB CD, but maybe an 800MB CD. Then you'd need to go up to a DVD, or two CDs. Also, new versions of much of our software are regularly released, making old versions, well, old.

If you wished to distribute them as ready to run from the CD (live mode), you would run into licensing issues with Mozilla's apps. Mozilla protects their name, and so unauthorized distribution of modified copies is not allowed. However, you are permitted to distribute the PortableApps.com installer.

As far as we ordinary PortableApps.com users and developers know, John T. Haller is getting towards having a business deal with official PortableApps.com branded USB disks. I am not aware of any existing business partners, though. As for costs, I think that it's really up to you, whatever you think reasonable, and what you can get away with Blum

As for artwork, this is where you may have issues. The PortableApps.com logo is trademarked (again, for very reasonable name protection), and without John T. Haller's permission, you may not use it in any distributions. As for back covers, inlays and things like that, if you want screenshots, you can take them yourself, or you should be able to use the ones from the app pages (e.g. Stellarium Portable, which has this screenshot)

Also, I dare say that if you wanted to have individual apps, you might like to copy the site design, with all the app descriptions, etc. Again, wait for John's permission on that, as it contains the logo.

For myself, I'm glad to see some commercial interest in PortableApps.com. I think we (particularly John) deserve such publicity Wink

Summary: yes you can, it will work, but without permission, don't use the PortableApps.com logo.

For any other questions, just wait for John T. Haller to answer, he probably will. He's probably in bed at the moment, though, having a well earned rest Blum

And, of course, welcome to PortableApps.com! Smile

(P.S. it is PortableApps.com, not PortableApps)

Edit: I see some websites...
http://rozaleenda.com/ – redirects to...
http://www.w2n.net/ – your official site?
http://w2n.org/ – phpBB community forums, "unavailable" atm

Can you tell us a little more about you, so that John can have more information to go on?

I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.

Let us all make PortableApps.com a huge success in CD media too.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the quick and elaborate answers to my post above. Please find my comments below to each of your issues.

All of the applications distributed by PortableApps.com are under OSI-approved open source licenses. This means that they their source code is available for viewing or modifications, and that they can be freely distributed.

I know it. And, for your information, we are an official partner/distributor of OpenOffice.org company, and distributing their products worldwide, and in India, in the same manner, I proposed here, for PortableApps.com products.

Also, new versions of much of our software are regularly released, making old versions, well, old. ...If you wished to distribute them as ready to run from the CD (live mode), you would run into licensing issues with Mozilla's apps. Mozilla protects their name, and so unauthorized distribution of modified copies is not allowed. However, you are permitted to distribute the PortableApps.com installer.

What we can do is offer two different CDs (for now), one is for all installers and another is for LIVE versions. If in LIVE version Mozilla products can't be included due to their license/terms, then we can exclude those products, in that CD. But, we want to offer all the available portable software in the CD. ...For now, until it will be under 700 MB, then we will offer 1 CD. Later, we can either think of 'Volume 2' or select the most important/popular products and exclude less-popular products, to fit in a single CD.

The versions of many software products will keep changing and that's why, we are offering 'On-Demand' manufacture for these CDs. This will help everyong to get the very latest CD and we won't have to destroy the CDs with old versions.

As far as we ordinary PortableApps.com users and developers know, John T. Haller is getting towards having a business deal with official PortableApps.com branded USB disks. I am not aware of any existing business partners, though. As for costs, I think that it's really up to you, whatever you think reasonable, and what you can get away with :P

A branded USB disk would be great too. Additionally, I guess, our offering as a CD, would be even better for every user. ...Can you give me your suggestion about the cost of the CD, which will include all the portable products available in this web site? Just give me your idea. If you were to buy the CD, how much price you would give? The CD will be highest-grade retail quality, with jewel case, full-colour print on disk surface, 2-panel inlay card, tray card, cellophane wrapping and an UPC Bar code.

Stellarium Portable, which has this screenshot). ...Also, I dare say that if you wanted to have individual apps, you might like to copy the site design, with all the app descriptions, etc. Again, wait for John's permission on that, as it contains the logo.

We can design all the aspects of the CD, including all the artworks, texts, screenshots, etc. That's not a problem at all, because, I myself am a graphic designer.

In the CD, what I will use, are, the names of the portable products, one-line description (example: OpenOffice.org Portable - word processor, spreadsheet, presentations with Microsoft compatibility), and screenshots from each product's page, in this web site.

For PortableApps.org logo, I will wait for the comment of John and his permission. Additionally, we can also send him the artwork designs before we will manufacture any CD. That way, he can see everything to be produced and approve the design etc.

For myself, I'm glad to see some commercial interest in PortableApps.com. I think we (particularly John) deserve such publicity ;-)

Well, I guess, a CD will definitely increase the popularity of this web site, John and as a whole the usages of portable products. And, there are many users who can't download huge files from internet because of their slow internet connections. And, there are people who wants to keep a CD of all these products, so that, they can use it anywhere.

For all these reasons, I guess, our retail-quality high-grade CD products of PortableApps.com products will be very popular too.

Best solution I can offer at

Best solution I can offer at the time, is to contact John T. Haller, the creator of this site, using the Software and Hardware Partnerships e-mail address on the Contact Us

While it's great to see your support for, and willingness to help spread PortableApps.com applications, John typically asks that all possible business-related material get sent to the above contact address, instead of being placed in the forums.

Thanks ZachHudock!

Hi ZachHudock,

Thanks for your positive reply. Well, I have already emailed in that email address few days ago. Just now, I re-sent it. If you can, please ask John to check the email and let me know.

The topic I created above, is not only for John, but to know valuable comments and opinions from all the forum users here. It will greatly help us to determine about the products to be included in the CD.

And, if you have gone through all the above posts here, then, I would like to know your idea about the price of single CD with all the PortableApps.com products currently available, in a retail-ready, high-quality, sealed jewel boxed CD. Please tell me, what price you will give, if you are the buyer.

Thanks once again.

I dunno

I followed these links, and they lead to some pretty flimsy looking stuff. Their site says they've got over 100 awards, but follow those links - nothing but "parking" pages.
Similarly, follow the links in the footer takes you to a very suspicious looking Wikipedia ripoff - it even calls itself Wikipedia; and also to other redirecting sites, which end up in "parking" pages.

I'll say it: I don't trust this guy, and neither should anyone else.
If he came to my door, I'd lock it and call my watchdog.

I believe in love and trust and all that, but this gives me the heebies.

Wow...

I didn't know that PortableApps.com was going so far upscale (actually I did ever since that 'What is PortableApps.com's future?' post :P).

  • As for the Artwork, we have 2 (great) German graphic designers (volunteering, of course, and their nicks are MrElchBlau and NeoRame), that have made a whole lot of artwork, including themes and desktop wallpapers.
  • Wow, amaray cases look like those cases at the library. I definitely agree that they look better.
  • Currently, the Normal Suite is roughly 120MB (like Chris Morgan said) and should fit on a DVD. But for consistency and because of the emptiness of the disc I would recommend adding a couple other suites and apps. Of course since our apps come out so quickly, the CD's would be rendered outdated in just a couple months. So perhaps that autoupdate should be included and officialized (first).
  • As for the pricing, since the suite is free, the charge is basically for the cases and the printing, so that would mean the money goes into the expenses+the profit you intend. Seeing from this, the cases are roughly a quarter in bulk. Then on that thing, the price for all you described brings it up to $2.17. So since software is loaded, I would say a decent price would be about 4-7 dollars.
  • Dang, I wish I had the answer for the third one. But that would be ultimately up to John.
My recommendation would be Firefox and Thunderbird (the flagship products), with the splashscreen on top. Just my suggestion.

To Casey...

Hi Casey,

Thanks for your reply and the valuable opinions about the issues. Well, please find my answers here...

As for the Artwork, we have 2 (great) German graphic designers (volunteering, of course, and their nicks are MrElchBlau and NeoRame), that have made a whole lot of artwork, including themes and desktop wallpapers.

Well, for the artworks, I have decided that I will design our own artworks, design layout and use the color schemes of this web site. Upon permission (if we will get), we will use PortableApps.com logo too. And, we can use the screenshots of the products, from this site. ...We always create every artworks of all the CD/DVD we produce. We are the worldwide distributor of OpenOffice.org and for those CDs also, we have created all the artworks ourselves.

Wow, amaray cases look like those cases at the library. I definitely agree that they look better.

Generally, most of our CD/DVD products are with 'DVD Amaray Case', which looks much professional for software products. Our products like music albums and some other titles are with 'CD Jewel Case'. We have decided to go with 'Amaray Case' for these PortableApps.com CD/DVD titles.

Currently, the Normal Suite is roughly 120MB (like Chris Morgan said) and should fit on a DVD. But for consistency and because of the emptiness of the disc I would recommend adding a couple other suites and apps. Of course since our apps come out so quickly, the CD's would be rendered outdated in just a couple months. So perhaps that autoupdate should be included and officialized (first).

We will include all the PortableApps.com products, located in the 'Suite' and 'Applications' pages in this web site. Additionally, we may include the other portable software products from the 'Forums' also, if we will get the permissions for them. As a whole, we will create a CD within 700 MB (as much as possible). In future, we will create new CD, with latest versions of the products. This is why, we are creating 'On-Demand' manufacturing of the CDs, so that, we can always update the CD content with latest software and make new CDs available.

As for the pricing, since the suite is free, the charge is basically for the cases and the printing, so that would mean the money goes into the expenses+the profit you intend. Seeing from this, the cases are roughly a quarter in bulk. Then on that thing, the price for all you described brings it up to $2.17. So since software is loaded, I would say a decent price would be about 4-7 dollars.

The raw materials are cheap if we will buy a lot at once. But, since we are manufacturing the products 'on-demand', so it would cost a little more. The CD price also includes the transaction/processor fees. The 'on-demand' system has many great plus points, which you may know already. ...We are thiking something like US$10 only, for the CD, with all the portable products. For our product of OpenOffice.org products, we also have settled for US$10 only. We can give discount to the customers, who will buy in bulk of 5-10-20 CD copies at once. Please let me know, if this price (US$10) is OK from all ends.

Dang, I wish I had the answer for the third one. But that would be ultimately up to John. ...My recommendation would be Firefox and Thunderbird (the flagship products), with the splashscreen on top. Just my suggestion.

As I have said above, we will use screenshots of the products and brief descriptions, along with other details.

Please feel free to give opinions about any of the issues raised above.

This REALLY needs to be answered John T. Haller, not by us!

He is the founder of Portable Apps. While we have some incredibly talented people on this forum, your business here is entirely just that, business, and needs to be answered only by people who are official representatives of the company.
Please bear in mind that anything posted on these boards by members is opinion, and not the official statements or position of PortableApps.com.

Thanks,

You are right, Andrew!

Hi Andrew,

You are absolutely right in this issue. I have already sent John, proposing the issues and waiting for his reply in email.

For now, I am asking to have everyone's opinions about these issues. We are not taking all these posts as the official one. But, opinions from everyone can certainly make the CD product much better.

You tell me, what should be the price of the CD, with all the portable products?

Please.

Nothing's happened to me. But you present your company as a big deal, and I have yet to see anything real in the links that you have provided, or any searches on the net about you or your company outside of self-promotion.
The "awards" links on your site either lead to 404, or to sites that appear to give awards to anyone that registers with them.
The one link that had any content at all was the w2n.net wikipedia, which is a hacked mirror of wikipedia. According to the REAL Wikipedia, your w2n.net wikipedia does not include the necessary licensing information (GFDL).
See this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks/Vwxyz#The_W2N.net_Wikipedia

Licensing issues are taken very seriously here.

Also, despite the fact that other posters have asked you to deal directly with John Haller, you persist in asking business related questions, such as pricing, on these forums.

I've said my piece. If it turns out that your company is legit, fine. But it's not me you need to convince. Talk to John.

To Solanus...

Hi,

Thanks for all the details. Well, here are my comments...

--1. As I have said above also, I have emailed Mr. John Haller and waiting for his response for my proposal. Regarding pricing, I have invited everyone to post their idea about the pricing. This is not a business related information that needs to be secret. I think, I can ask for opinions from others, not? Obviously, final decision (for pricing) will be taken by either Mr. John or my company. But, exchaging ideas is not bad, I guess.

--2. Regarding a custom version of Wikipedia, in our sub-domain, I have created the whole application, by customizing an already-available PHP script heavily. You can get that script, by searching in Google. ...The script we made is for our personal use only and I can take it down any time, if there is any licensing issue, or other problem. It's not a big deal.

--3. Our main corporate site (w2n.net) is currently under-going a resigning phase and that's why, you will find only 1 temporary home page there. The links for various awards were given to us by the award companies themselves. We have received those awards in last few years and maybe, some of the links are expired by now, which is not our fault. These awards are publicly available but not to every applicants, without checking anything.

--4. We have created, designed, developed several web sites in various countries. You can check one of our latest works at www.kff.in, which is the official web site of Kolkata International Film Festival, the second-largest film festival in India, and owned/operated by the government. You can find our name in the footer section.

--5. What we have offered/proposed in this web site (and to the owner of this site) is to manufacture CD products, with all the PortableApps.com applications, so that, anyone can order them and we will ship to most countries. ...Previously, we made over 100 products like this one (music albums, videos, etc) without any problem. ...We are also a world-wide distributor of OpenOffice.org products, in CD, in the same way as proposed above.

--6. Since this web site is majorly community-based, so I thought to ask about everyone's views/opinions about our offer. So, I have posted this topic here. I didn't want to exchange business information, because, that should be exchanged and decided by PortableApps.com owner and us. But, I thought, I can ask for opinions of forum-members about the pricing and contents, as if, they are the buyers.

I am sorry, if my thoughts are wrong.

Thanks for everything.

Hi sergentsiler,

that this is a good idea. it would be kinda like ubuntu and canocal inc.

Can you tell me, what idea above you like the most? All the PortableApps.com products in a CD? Or, what else?

And, according to you, what is your opinion about the price of the CD with above-said products and retail-quality? Just give us your opinion.

well...

what i like the most is the fact that someone will be offering portable apps software on CD format in the mail. also, i would start by offering the Suite as well as some of the more popular apps on the CD as well as maybe a DVD version with all 3 versions of the menu (Basic, Lite, and Suite) as well as all of the current apps and links to the application section of this site.

and as for the price, the cheaper the better. and if you could be like Canocal inc (the people that distribute Ubuntu) and offer free CD's as well, that would be awsome. also, because of liscensing and things like that, i believe that if you are to make any profi off of the CD's, a portion must go to this website/John T. Haller.

For sergentsiler

Hi Kyle,

Thanks for your detailed opinion. Here are my comments regarding your issues...

--1. What we are planning to release (upon John's permission) is to 2 different CD titles, for now. CD space (700 MB) can be sufficient, so DVD is not needed right now.

A> CD-1 with PortableApps.com Suite and all the products listed in the 'Applications' page, as well as some tested portable products, released in this Forum.

B> CD-2 same products as above, but in LIVE mode. That means, you can run the software from the CD itself. For this CD, I need to have permissions from Mozilla, I guess, for licensing Firefox, etc.

--2. As for the Price of the CD titles, I am thinking about US$8 only. When I have posted the first topic here, I was planning about $10, but now, I am thinking to fix US$8 only.

Obviously, regarding pricing and all other issues, I need to get John's reply, as he didn't reply till now, to my proposal, in email. Let's see what he comments.

Keep posting your ideas and suggestions.

Thanks once again.

For Kyle Randy Griesbach...

Dear Kyle,

I am also eagerly looking forward to start this joint venture with PortableApps.com company. Very soon, hopefully, we can provide everyone the good news.

We have plenty of USB Drive models to choose from and every of those units will be branded with PortableApps.com logo etc.

Also, we are simply ready to create those 2 proposed CD products and market/deliver them worldwide.

Let's see, what happens.

For John...

Dear John,

Thanks for the reply at last. If you completely read the above proposal and discussions with other forum members, you will know, we have proposed these issues quite a long ago (see the date of the first post above).

What we are interested to make...

--1. A CD with all the PortableApps.com products, and all the available software from the forums of this web site.

--2. A same CD like above, but most of the products will be in 'LIVE' mode. That means, users can simply run those products from the CD itself.

--3. A complete set of above-mentioned products, in high-quality USB Flash drive. We have many different models (shapes/sizes/colors) to choose from. And, all these USB drives will be branded with PortableApps.com logo and other things.

Please take your time and let me know your valuable comments.

In INDIA (where I live), I have already started marketing about these products and quite a few people are already shown interests to buy these products, in CD/USB, etc.

Another approach

Why don't you go ahead and produce and distribute the CD and if John is interested in following up let him contact you. If he's not interested, as it so appears, it shouldn't matter what you do. Wink

For Ed...

Dear Ed,

Thanks for the positive reply. Well, we have started marketing already and it seems, many buyers are waiting for our PortableApps.com CD as well as USB products. But in both cases, I want to release official version of CD and USB products, after John's permission, so that, it looks good and official too.

Many buyers are waiting and we can certainly manufacture the CD and USB both. But, we don't have the high-resolution logo of this web site and don't know, if using this low-resolution logo is permitted at all. That's why, we have stopped and eagerly waiting for John's reply.

John, if you are reading this, please response as soon as possible.

Be paitent and wait

If you would like to work with John he said that he will email you. I suggest you wait until then.

for your information. John and the other moderators of this site do not receive anything for all the work they are doing. Portable Apps is something they have to do in there spare time around there personal lives. John seems very keen, it would be better for you to wait and discuss it with him. If/when john has contacted you you will be underway. be patient and out of respect for John don't get carried away.

If you look around some of the other posts here you can see that others get easily annoyed and go on and on when they have to waite on things.

remember as others have said John is already thinking about having cds and usb sticks etc. So it could work out with you and him. It would be nice to see John finally getting some $$$$$$ for all the hard work he has put in.

Do not feel you have to reply to my post just consider what I have said

Dear Mickeyj4j... Many thanks

Dear Mickeyj4j...

Many thanks for the important suggestion in a detailed way. YES, I am waiting for John's reply. If you see the previous posts here, maybe, someone suggested me to go ahead and make CDs, but that time also, I said, I would love to wait for John's words about the issues, before I will proceed further.

Dear Ryan McCue,

Many thanks for the invititive and reminding John once again. I hope to get his detailed and positive reply very soon.

Soon

I'll be replying soon. I'm currently on the road after meeting with another major flash drive vendor. We don't yet have the contracts in place for CD delivery which is what the delay is. And you can't use our trademarks or our partners trademarks in a commercial product without permission. Unlike other sites, we make very sure to respect trademarks and obtain the proper agreements to do everything we do, so it's not as simple as saying yes, go ahead (yet, that is... it soon will be).

For John...

Dear John,

First of all, many thanks for your reply. Don't worry, we are not going to make/sell CDs without your permission, because, if that was the case, we would have done it much earlier. It's been 3 months and I still say, yes, we are waiting eagerly for your valued comments and permission. Because, whatever we will do, we want to do with the legal way, along with agreement from both parties.

So, please don't worry about it, take your time and respond to our proposal. Our main proposal is for CD product, second is USB. But, if we will get good response etc., we will make USB with large quantities.

Thanks for everything.

very bad timing

Too bad all this time to find a USB vendor and not taking advantage of one chomping at the bit to conclude such a deal will result in missing the greatest shopping season on earth and instead will land in the middle of a global recession.

Maybe waiting till next Octoer - November to conclude such a deal would be better at this point. The new PAM might even be included then.

VERY different

They are extremely different things. We're talking to vendors with tens of millions of drives per year.

Now that's the kind of volume

Now that's the kind of volume PA.com deserves : )

@John - I hope when PA's community exceeds a million registered forum users on top of many million worldwide software users you will still take the time to drop in on the forums and be as accessible to the masses Biggrin

Hi John,

I'm looking forward to help you distribute some of your ten million drives in Malaysia market.

Is there a procedure for me to register my company to become your main distributor in Malaysia?

Thanks

Email

Just drop an email to the business development contact with that in the subject and you'll be in the queue. The contracts are complete and the cobranding is being finished up. You'll even be able to earn ongoing revenue once we're ready to roll out.

To Simeon...

Dear,

It's been much more than one month. See my first post above. It was on September 12, 2008. So, exactly 3 months today, since I have first proposed about it. I know, it's really enough time for John to reply this, since we are eagerly waiting to make the CD and USB products and all of our potential clients are WAITING to buy. Also, here, I have found many are quite interested about these products.

So, my concern is, how long they will wait. 3 months...

John, where are you? Please take your time and reply to our proposal above.

Thanks to all,

Ok so this may help.

I am from New Zealand. Here there is a company Called Dick Smiths Electronics (Google them for the New Zealand site). They sell Openoffice CDS with other software, Ubuntu linux and various other linux versions all for $10(NZD New Zealand Dollars) each. I would pay around this price for a PA CD here in New Zealand. I am not really sure what the American dollar values are. Something reionable like this would be good. Just to cover the cost of the cd/dvd, case, shipping etc. As your company sells cds around the world you must have some idea about what you could sell it for yourself.

This is just my opinion.

It is really for you and John to discus and sort out like many have said in this post.

I wish you well in this venture and hope things work out for the best. This is a good idea and I am sure that John would consider it. As this site is run by volunteers working for free and there seems to be no income to my knowledge. If you partner with the team it could be a good way for them to earn some $$$. I think that is why John was wanting to Sell PA branded usb flash drives.

For Mickeyj4j...

Hi friend,

First of all, many thanks for your well-thought reply and few important details. Well, we are also a worldwide distributor of OpenOffice.org products, in CD media (and USB Drives very soon), and we are offering that CD for US$10 only.

But, for PortableApps.com CD, we are thinking to offer it for US$8.00 only (plus shipping), but, John will discuss with me, about this issue.

Also, we are seriously want to offer PortableApps products in high-quality USB Drives as well.

Let's see, how the things will be done.

Keep suggesting more things...
