Xenon File Manager 2.0 Alpha 1 (Update 2)

Application: Xenon File Manager Portable
Category: Utilities
Description: Xenon File Manager is an open source, portable file manager.

This version is a complete rewrite of Xenon in C++/wxWidgets. Fast! Fast! Fast! It is not feature complete. I just wanted to give everybody a preview of what is coming next. The goal is to match the feature set of 1.5 so please don't request any new features unless it is easy to implement or is GUI related. If I have not listed a feature below please tell me. I'm assuming it is OK to host this on the Xenon SF page because it is not a pre release.

  • Assocaion Editor (assoc.xml can be edited manually)
  • Bookmarks
  • Icon Sets
  • Translations
  • Folder view
  • Drag & Drop

I couldn't even get it to open, it crashed ~0.5 seconds after the splash appeared:
windows XP sp 2
exception code 0xc0000005 (Access Violation) http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html

Also shouldn't you use a dev-test splash not the release splash.

I'll try to compile it myself

Ditto

Same issue here.

Splash should be fine. It's just an alpha release of an already official app. It's not a development test.

Its not official or meant for everyday use so I wouldn't use the official Splash screen.

That is odd. It did that for me on an XP machine, but not on vista. I'd bet it is a VC runtime issue.

I'd try a different IDE

I'd try a different IDE instead of Visual C++, something like wxDev-C++, I almost got it compiled with that, need to fix some errors in it but it should work with it for the most part.

I'd use Code::Blocks over

I'd use Code::Blocks over Dev-C++, as Dev-C++ is no longer maintained

Ok...

Wine 1.1.4:

It doesn't even launch.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (still haven't updated because it is a VM that I almost never use) on admin account:

Default error message at the exact moment the splash appears.

Anyway, I am very excited about the new Xenon. Did you saw my mockup on a new interface on the other post? I am really waiting so I can ruin it on my PC to try it out.

Problems.

Upon launch, it dies. All I get is the splash, and then it fails. I'm in Vista 32bit. I also tried in XP Compatibility mode, but that failed as well.

Updated. It turns out that during the first call to OnSize controls cannot be resized. I tested this on XP and it ran perfectly.

Its Ok

Finally, i can download.
This is what i like:

  • Icons - I like the size of the images in the app. Great.
  • Help Window - I like it. Better

The 'not that bad' stuff thats really not important, cause you said that sorta above:

  • Can't see folders - I look threw my flash drive with Xenon and i could only see the files. No folders could be shown.
  • Missing a lot of property fuctions - I dont know if this is because your making a new release or because this is being redone from scratch.

But you said that it wasn't feature complete so i'm really not worried about it. Wink

Na na na, come on!

Nice!

This is lookin' really nice, however, I keep getting this one error, particularly when opening a drive letter, and moving up a directory:

Failed to retrieve file times for 'C:\pagefile.sys' (error 32: the process can not access the file because it is being used by another process.)

Details >>

Everything works perfectly

Everything works perfectly and much faster than 1.5. I do however get the same error when I access my C: drive.

Wow!

It works like a charm (for an alpha Blum ). I do see a lot of the frontend is yet not done, but it is a lot faster and nicer.

I do notice some alignment problem on Wine 1.1.4, but no (major) graphic problem on Windows XP.

I did not test it a lot. I saw some menus, and basic stuff. But I am really hoping this new version comes out FAST! Biggrin

BTW, the help browser isn't parsing <a> tags.

Very nice! I've quickly

Very nice! I've quickly looked, and it seems I can't see my folders on the thumbdrive. I've set my home folder to my X:\Documents to bypass the issue, but it's a minor annoyance.

One little thing: if you delete the Data folder, isn't the application supposed to recreate the files from the default settings? Because after I did this, it was repeatedly saying it couldn't find the file assoc.xml.

EDIT: It seems I can access the Documents and PortableApps folder when the "show hidden files" option is enabled.

You are only supposed to

You are only supposed to delete the content of the data folder. Not the folder itself.

Feature Requests for 2.0
  1. Allow a "Group" view ("View" > "Arrange Icons By" > "Show in Groups" in Windows) that allows the person to see files put in categories within folders. Especially if the person has a large amount of files in one folder.
  2. Allow for the entire interface to be skinable (see SMPlayer Portable)with multiple options for the interface.
  3. Support for "web folders"
  4. Addon System

self.path = path if self.path == None else self.path

I'll take these into

I'll take these into consideration for 2.1. I don't plan on adding many new features to 2.0.

1. I don't know if the wxWidgets control supports this.
2. I'm not sure that would be effective for a file manager...
3. You mean like FTP or WebDav?
4. 90% sure about this one! I hope to have DLL based plugins and user editable scripts.

Ok
  1. Beyond my comprehension (No Offense), I don't know any thing about wxWigets.
  2. Just for Fun Biggrin the changeable interface would fit with different icon sets, but of course it's your app.
  3. FTP Support would be great and the interface would be like Windows' "Map Network Drives" it would be treated as another drive or folder it wouldn't look like a common FTP interface.
  4. Yayyyyyyyy Biggrin

Also: about 1.5, because it doesn't support web folders I can't access the desktop at school, which the IT guys have rigged to be the default desktop. Photo coming soon.
