VirtualDub Portable 1.8.6 French & English versions

Hi!

First of all, I'd like to thanks John T. Haller for the PortableApps Platform, and the NSIS Script availables.

Yesterday, I have publicly released a French website for VirtualDub. Within other resources, a French Portable version is available too.

The website is: [self promotional link removed by moderator JTH]

I have more or less reused the existing scripts, modifying them slightly.

The most notable differences are located in the PortableApps.comInstallerConfig.nsh file.

I have added the following strings in the dedicated areas:

define PRESERVEDIRECTORY2 "App\VirtualDub\plugins32"
define PRESERVEFILE1 "App\VirtualDub\VirtualDub.jobs"
define PRESERVEFILE2 "App\VirtualDub\Quicktime.ini"

"plugins32" is to preserve the input plugins if any, "VirtualDub.jobs" to preserve the job file, and "Quicktime.ini" to preserve the Quicktime ini file added by the Quicktime input plugin.

Best Regards,

Sparad0x

Self Promotion

Since you're mainly promoting your site and duplicating the effort here, your link has been removed. Self-promotion of clones of our apps is against the forum guidelines, especially when the primary difference is the removal of our branding and the replacement with your own as you did with the PortableApps.com Installer (now branded with your logo instead of ours). The plugins32 directory isn't used. And the VirtualDub.jobs and Quicktime.ini are being handled by our next release properly (in the Data directory) so no change to the installer is necessary.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Hem... I have not seen any

Hem... I have not seen any PortableApps French version for VirtualDub on your website... nor the very latest version available...
I mainly promoted the French version, not the English one. I have edited my first post later to add the "English" mention because there were no answers, and I wanted to precise that both French and English versions are available (currently v1.8.6). And if I have written the added strings, it was to help you to improve it, not to make you angry!
Plugins32 directory is used by new input plugins, as described here on my website (fell free to remove this "self-promotion" link as soon as read), but you can ignore it if you want.

I'm sorry, I though your project was open-source and we had to share...

But Don't worry, I won't make you waste more time, and no more notify any future update/new software on your forum.

Translation team?

Have you considered joining the translation team here? As far as I know, we don't currently have an active French team and we could probably use one.

Also, although the project *is* open source, we prefer having everything centralised rather than having it spread out. You are more than welcome to translate the installer and launcher strings for us and contribute them back Smile

The installer strings are here and the launcher strings are here. If you do decide to translate them, can you please check against the current translations and then post your translations here?

Thanks.

Not Personal

Sparad0x, it wasn't a personal issue. It's just part of the forum guidelines and we've had to apply it to folks who abuse the forums, so it has to be applied evenly to everyone. (Otherwise folks get mad)

The plugins folder can be used for all plugins including the ones you mentioned. The plugins folder is a standard part of VirtualDub and referenced in the documentation on their site. The plugins32 folder only seems to be mentioned in the installation instructions of those plugins for some reason. But it works fine from plugins. Perhaps plugins32 is a leftover from an older VirtualDub release. Either way, the installer in the next release leaves plugins32 for folks who happen to use the directory. It also moves the other data files I mentioned so they get backed up.

Regarding the installer, it's a trademark issue. You can't alter the PortableApps.com Installer and keep our trademarks on it. As it's open source, you're free to under the terms of the GPL, though, and then use it as an installer for software under the GPL.

And yes, our software is open source, but our forums have guidelines around self-promotion. These are linked to when you make a post. We have the cloning rule in there to prevent multiple versions of an app from being released by different parties on PortableApps.com which leads to user confusion. It's happened before.

As for French, I was unaware that there was a French release of VirtualDub. For apps that have individual language releases, we try and support English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Simplified Chinese (as we do with Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, etc). I was under the impression VirtualDub was English only. We'd be happy to distribute it. We have more updated French launcher and installer strings than the ones Ryan referenced above. They're included with the latest Firefox Portable release, for instance.

If you're interested in translation, we could definitely use more help with the translation team. And if you're interested in development, we could use more developers, too. VirtualDub is one of the apps I'm planning to pass on to someone else to free up my time for the platform and business stuff.
