hi,
i like miranda IM, its comfortable
what me bothers is that the icons for the different services are all the same, impossible to re/disconnect to a single service quickly.
well utf-8 support would be nice but maybe its just a plugin i need to install.
greetings
There's an option in the preferences that allows you to show the service's name next to the icons in the status bar... if those are the icons you're talking about. Look under Options::Contact List::Status Bar; the checkbox you're looking for is "Show protocol names."
I believe you can also customize the icons if you're up to it. Look under Options::Contact List::Icons.

thanks for your answer,
first, showing the protocoll names near the icons is really awfull, it takes way too much space.
(thx anyway for that hint)
second, ok it *is* possible to add specific icons - but i see absolutely no reason why every portable-miranda-user has to download a icon set and set an icon for every f*cking protocol for every status manually
it really bothers me, because im no miranda-pro and i just want to have a quick overview about my contacs without creating my personal icon set...
EDIT:
well, a secure DB driver would also be usefull, because i can loose my usbstick etc.
Well don't complain to us. Complain to the Miranda IM developers. John only repackaged an official copy of Miranda to be portable; he didn't modify the program's behavior.
Miranda is the Linux of instant messengers. Out of the box, it's pretty much a blank slate; it's up to the user to customize it beyond its "generic" initial appearance. If you're not up to that, Gaim is probably a better choice.

Are you looking for something like this?:
Miranda w/icons

You change icons with:
Contact List->Icons
I suggest downloading one nice set of them here: http://addons.miranda-im.org/details.php?action=viewfile&id=2334
if you look for emoticons then mostly you need to download them either one set for all protocols or set for each protocol: most emoticons are avabile at miranda's addon page: http://addons.miranda-im.org/
