WOW!!!!!
I can't believe how quick that was, I only just got notified by Firefox on my computer that I need to update to the new version! Now I come here and I find a quick update for Firefox Portable! Amazing!
Well done John and everyone else helping him! PortableApps is clearly the best!
Super...
Hello,
at first, yeah, new version... and how fast.
And now my question, should I install the FireFox new (over the old version) or can I use the FireFox-included updater?
Greetings
Xyber
Update experience...
I've noticed if I try to update using the normal Firefox method, my portable version of Firefox becomes registered in the Add/Remove Programs on the computer I am using...so I now use the Firefox extension FEBE to backup my Firefox data, delete my old folder, install the new version, re-install the FEBE extension into the new version and use it to re-install my old Firefox data (you can just rename your old folder if you're paranoid).
As appsuser said
use the PortableApps.com package and NOT the built in updater!
Since version 2.0.0.6 the built i updater messes with your local install.
@appsuser
You do know that you don't have to use the FEBE extension and you can just install the new package over the old o9ne without loosing your data?
or if you have firefox
or if you have firefox installed, first update your portable firefox then regular firefox
Better way to go...
@Simeon:
Thanks for clarifying...that's certainly easier and quicker for most people, and I'm sure fine in this situation...I've just gotten into the general habit of clean installs, working with Windows...
Turn off update checker?
It might be a good idea to turn off the built in update checker to stop people from using it and f*cking up their installation? I nearly clicked yes to download the update out of old habit when the update notification popped up...
Unfortunately
John cant do that due to his license agreement with Mozilla.
Just to clarify...
I didn't mean the portableapps team should change the sourcecode for Firefox. I was thinking about adding the line below to PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App\DefaultData\profile\prefs.js
user_pref("app.update.enabled", false);
Or is this also not possible to do? If so I would really love to know why.
Not Possible
Muchambo
Welcome to PortableApps.com,
Unfortunately distributing any version of FF with that change IS changing the source code.
It was done in the past, it is not allowed now.
This is Mozilla's decision and there is nothing we can do about it without their permission.
Trust me, we wish we could
Tim
It
isn't possible due to the licensing agreement John has with Mozilla. This allows him to use the Firefox name, which is trademarked, as long as he doesn't change the source, of which the settings files are included.
*edit* Looks like Tim beet me to it
