Java Portable 6 Update 21 has been released by PortableApps.com. Java Portable allows you to easily install the Java runtime engine to your PortableApps.com-enabled device for use with portable apps like OpenOffice.org Portable, all without any Java runtime on the local PC. This release updates Java Portable to the latest release. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format for easy use from any portable device and integration with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's completely free.
Features
Java Portable allows you to easily add a Java runtime environment to your portable device. It automatically works with apps in PortableApps.com Format like OpenOffice.org Portable. No Java runtime environment needs to be installed on the local machine and no admin rights are required. The Sun JVM will be downloaded directly from Sun's servers as part of the installation process.
Java Portable Launcher
In addition to using Java Portable with portable apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format, you can also use our Java Portable Launcher to run Java apps in JAR format. It will even automatically portablize the settings of many Java apps.
Java Portable Apps Coming
This release of Java Portable marks the beginning of Java apps on the PortableApps.com Platform. We have an array of Java-based portable apps in testing and will begin releasing them soon.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format
Java Portable is packaged as a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Should this show up in the updater? It doesn't now but not sure if it is supposed to.
Not Yet
It's not an actual app. It's a CommonFiles plugin. So the updater doesn't yet know it's there. It will shortly.

sorry. The problem was in the chair-to-keyboard interface.
Does Firefox Portable find it and use it?
Please bear with me for asking possibly old questions...
It's very good to have Java Portable, now, excellent.
But can Firefox Portable use it? If not, then one cannot use Firefox Portable on web sites using Java applets (and there are a great many).
If not already done, it'd be very very useful to tweak Firefox Portable so that it uses Java Portable, when available on the same USB stick....
TIA for any feedback.
No
No, it's not supported and not easy to implement either, or else we would have implemented it before now. A pity, but at the moment you can only use it for running Java apps, not using it as a browser plugin.
What about Tools.jar ?
I'm trying to setup something that uses a self-contained memory stick and for my app to work, I need the tools.jar .
Is there any reason why it didn't get installed too ?
Not JRE
tools.jar is not in the JRE, which is what this is. It's in the JDK (#), which we don't have a portable version of because the installer is done differently so we can't just extract it.
