MediaCoder is a media transcoder that supports many of the most popular audio/video formats. (Homepage)
Just so that you are aware: Your previous settings will be written over in Pre-Release 3. I had to change the settings to use Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition, instead of Internet Explorer or the system's installation of Firefox. As far as I can tell, MediaCoder Portable requires Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition to be installed on the user's flash drive. Please see this post regarding any questions about MediaCoder Portable's browser usage.

I use MediaConverter Stand alone edition on my home pc and their online converter, seems nice to have a converter to bring with me. I'll get it and try it out.

Could you link to their online converter?
Thanks,

It's a great online program! I use the standalone edition more often because my home pc is dialup. The only downside to the standalone is .net framework dependent.

I get the following Error message when starting MediaCoder Portable:
"Error initializing preference tree"
The file mccore.xml is missing from the installation.
After copying mccore.xml from the "non-portable" MediaCoder installation, it was possible to start without Error message.
I have Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition installed, but it still used my local Internet Explorer to launch the app.
I'll upload the next pre-release with the mccore.xml, but I'll have to look into the Firefox problem. Is it in the FirefoxPortable folder, with your exe being FirefoxPortable.exe? If not, that's the problem. It will only work with that configuration.

The link is broken for me. I've tried it 8 times already and it won't download.
This is the error it gives me:
"The quickkey you provided for file download was invalid. This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on Mediafire. This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or Mediafire."
Are you changing your file host? If so, please post a new link. Don't leave me out here in the rain and the cold...alone...without a hoodie...

I have Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition installed at drive:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\ and MediaCoder Portable installed at drive:\PortableApps\MediaCoderPortable\.
When launching MediaCoder Portable from the PortableApps.com Menu, an Internet Explorer browser opens up with the page "Thanks for using MediaCoder".
Looking at the firefox.nsi for the Firefox shortcut, it contains:
ExecWait `..\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe`
which seem to indicate that the Firefox shortcut should be placed at drive:\PortableApps\MediaCoderPortable\. Copying firefox.exe to this location doesn't help because the path in Browser Setup is defined as drive:\PortableApps\MediaCoderPortable\App\MediaCoder\firefox\.
Wouldn't it be better to skip the Firefox shortcut and simply define the default path to Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition in the Browser Setup?
I checked for updates and I noticed a new version available. Please update your installer.

I won't be able to make any updates until tomorrow. I'll take a look at all of the mentioned errors then.

In Pre-Release 3, the path to Firefox in Browser Setup is:
..\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe
With a default installation of MediaCoder Portable, the MediaCoder executable is located at drive:\PortableApps\MediaCoderPortable\App\MediaCoder\
This means that the path in Browser Setup must be changed to:
..\..\..\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe
To verify the correct path to FirefoxPortable, open Settings in MediaCoder.
It should start FirefoxPortable with the URL: http://127.0.0.1:19819/prefs/main.xul?cat=1
Note: MediaCoder uses the system's default browser to open the page "Thanks for using MediaCoder" and then launch the application.
It's possible to set it so that it doesn't show this page anymore.
The Browser Setup setting doesn't affect which browser is used on launch of MediaCoder.
It seemed to work fine for me, but I'll change it. Thanks.

Kevin,
You seemed to have removed the previous statement that you must have Firefox in order to use this app. Since you changed the setting to use Firefox portable I am guessing this is not the case (that Firefox, portable or otherwise is still needed [or IE I guess])
If this is the case could you restore the statement. If this was the first time I had seen this post I might have downloaded it to give it a try. I am hesitant to do so because of need for Firefox [in any form, or IE).
Could you explain why/how this app needs/uses the/a browser.
Is it possible to have it stand alone (that is not use a browser at all)
I'm sure I've missed something,
Thanks for the info.
Looking forward to a Release Candidate.
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Thank you. I should have left that part (about requiring MFPE) up there.
Now, I suppose that you could use the system's browser, but I am just following protocol (the website says that it requires Firefox). So far, it seems from comments that it works from Internet Explorer, but I haven't tried it myself.
From what I see, MediaCoder uses an internet browser to launch the application. You can set it so that it does not use the browser, but that requires the browser in the first place ;). I believe that I have been able to run it without the browser, but that may have been after I changed the settings so that I didn't need Firefox. It is a standalone app, but it launches from Firefox. As far as I can see, that is all that it uses it for. I really can't tell if you can just not use the browser.
Please let me know about any further mistakes/needed info.

If you want to configure 'advanced' settings, Media Coder launches Firefox to display/edit an XML config files. Much like about:config in FF.
IE (or @ least IE 7 on XP) does not display this well, nor does it allow for changes to saved back.
