I think it would be awesome if some one could make a portable app out of this game. or at least out of the engine.

I think you would enjoy Nexuiz a whole lot better. It is built off the same engine, and is already natively portable.
nexuiz is biult off of the quake 2 engine while openarena is built from the quake 3 foss engine heavily modified. im probably ust going to make it portable myself it already mostly portable as in you dont have to install it but it does leave traces behind in /user/Application data/openarena/baseoa.
...manage to change the location of where openarena saves the appdata?
