Okay first of all I am a n00b so try not to get frustrated with me. I'm trying to install the Suite Standard Edition on my 2GB Dane-Elec USB drive. The executable file opens and the program runs. I select the drive and click install and the progress windows pops up. After ten minutes there is still no progress.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance everyone!
Sometimes it stalls at X percent, so give it some time. If not try installing to a local hard drive (say C:\Portable), if that works it could be a drive problem. Also make sure you have enough space on the drive Explorer-Right Click on drive-Properties. If none of that works, try downloading it again.
Does that mean that its actually installing it just doesn't show it?
It could 'stall' at say 20 percent. But still be installing. However, if it doesn't show even 1 percent, that's a diff. problem. Or maybe not, don't know for sure.
Thanks it it working now.
How do I add more apps to my drive. I want VLC player.

What Lurk said. However, there's VLC Portable on this site?

Come on, you've been here for nearly a year now!
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
I meant there's VLC Portable on this site, and it has an automatic installer, so why do you need to look at the adding apps documentation when it will install fine.
That's what my question mark was for.
I have just downloaded my portables apps but when trying to install them I keep getting this message from a pop-up "16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem" window:
"The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0593 ip:02BD op:63 6F 6E 74 65. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
What have I done wrong? Please assist me.
Thanks!
If a Terminal window popped up it usually means your download was corrupted... Try downloading again...
right click and save target as
or did you go to the sourceforge site
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
That happens if you try to "right click and save". Just click through on the download link.

I too am trying to install the Standard Edition. I get to 25%, the LED on the USB drive flickers away, I left it running for an hour, but nothing further happens. When I looked at the folder in the root of the drive (A-data, 4gig, almost empty) there is a PortableApps folder, with a number of sub-folders. However, I didn't find an .exe file that I can double-click on to run any of the programs.
The installation file I downloaded is the Standard_1.0.exe (89.5MB). I thought that it might be corrupt so downloaded it again, still the same.

on Your desktop, then copy the contents to Your drive.

Yes! That worked! Now I'm wondering about the drive. I believe some are faster than others. I used HDtach to check this one. The average read is 10.6MB/s, and random access is 2.3ms. Is this good enough?

You´ll see when working with Your drive. Some apps like firefox have to write back onto Your drive, but that´s no traffic like installing the whole suite. There´s a bunch of files to be transfered just by installing open office. That might be the cause for Your stall. Second, if there´s an antivirus guard running in the background and set to "check reading and writing" a slower drive might give up doing anything because that affords a lot of additional read/write operations during install. So...
the easiest solution isnt´t that far anyway. Enjoy PortableApps
