Siler's Website

this is the tread that me and ptmb (As well as anyone else) will be using to discuss my website and what we could do with it. i created this because i am sure everyone is annoyed at us for using the corrupt a wish threads for this discussion, and this is more convienient.

well i know that the screenshot that i gave you was in IE7 but at my school, it is the same weather it is IE7 or IE6, they somehow display the same. and if they can display the same on the ratty beaten and neglected excuses for computers running IE6 as the same ratty comps running IE7 then it should work fine.

also about the Print Screen thingy, i do use that and the water mark is from Free Download Manager which i somehow hacked into one of my school's comps.

and continuing ptmb's question, how do you guys like the new design?

Even the footer?

Then the logo is ok? Great! And the footer to? Great++!

I was thinking making the footer the same color of the border of the navbar, but I didn't like it, what do you think?

Free Download Manager does that? What a shame! Try Firefox Portable with DownThemAll, it creates some problems with file types associations when firefox is default browser, but as it is not to be default browser... it is ok to use.

And yes, what do you guys think of the screenshots of the website?

(Sergentsiler's screenshot using IE7)
(My screenshot using IEs4Linux's IE6, that somehow doesn't render the hacks correctly, even though IE6 on Windows renders the hacks correctly and should render the same way the above screenshot)
(My second screenshot using a decent web browser that doesn't need a lot of hacks)

neorame...

i must say, you are redicculusly good at graphics. that site is BEAST!

@ptmb:
i was thinking of changing the background, the same picture with low contrast but with a little color to loven things up just a bit. i also have this idea that we would use an image and make buttons on it and use that as the navigator bar. i was thinking of something like the vista taskbar but have it be more of a deep aqua color and the buttons could be like the tool tips on the taskbar. i could probably set up a hotspot thingy in dreamweaver to do that. what do you think?

Originally

Originally I made the site with some differences, with some blueish green gradients.

Here are the original images:

Heading
Navbar
Body
Footer

Then you updated your site and I decided to change the colors.

If you want to use them just shrink the to 1px wide and replace the background properties by this:

background: #color-notation-of-the-image-bottom-pixel url("path-to-image-that-is-saved-on-images-folder") repeat-x;

Blue is everything.

Isn't this a little bit very off-topic?
I bet you could discuss this by email.

Yeah, but...

Yeah, but Sergentsiler's web e-mail is still in beta, and it is really slow sending and receiving messages, so it is easier trough here Biggrin

Also, this is a good chance to train new web designers Wink

CSS?

Ever thought of using some CSS for this?
I think it's a bad idea to use one entire image for the background unless it's in a css div, and it would also improve the text layout.
I think that it would be easier on the eyes if you shrank that image down and put it somewhere like the top left corner of the page.

??

the site has css courtosy of ptmb and i am learning css, the bknd image is also managed by the css files. it is the curent site of mine that is full html /wo/ css.

also, here is a horrible throw-together of the new background image. unfortunately it looks horrible but it isn the final version, i still have to fix the way the logo shows in the pic and lower the overall contrast. preview here.

One problem

There is one problem with that picture (I know it is not final, but it is better to tell now and prevent). If I am right you are going to tile it horizontally and vertically, am I right?

If you tile the image vertically the bottom and the top colors wont match. It will be green on the top and dark as hell on the bottom. When tilling the image the problem is obvious (if you don't understand the problem replace the image in the css and go to a page with lots of scroll).

That also gives a problem with the font color to choose. If it is too bright, then it wont be understandable on the green. If it is too dark, then it wont be understandable on the black.

Beyond that the logo seems ok. (btw, apply some "Color to alpha" filter on that white, give the white some... 50% or so transparency, so it blends with the image limit color and isn't too bright to the letters)

And what do you think of the images I made originally (with used to have a different color scheme, that I don't remember Sad )

The body image is to give a sunken look to the body element, making appear that there is a shadow casted from the navbar. Also that the body's background color was the one from the green at the bottom of the image.

Maybe we could apply that with your new background image (when fixed).

If we use a dummy div (with the height of the image and 100% width) with my background image using the repeat-x property and we use your background image on the real body (with some modifications to my image to make the transition almost inexistent) we could make a good looking modern look.

But that would give a lot of work for a small detail that maybe nobody notices.

So, what do you think? We do it or loose it ?

@b23: The prototype of the site (shown on the screenshots) uses around 210 lines of CSS code for style, IE hacks, and specific print styles. Is that no CSS? But no problemo, I am sure you presumed that the new site was built on the top of the old one, but don't be fooled by the similar look. It wasn't.

Okay, I did assume...

sorry, and I had only a quick glance at the current code with the FF firebug extension, and didn't see anything. Duh.. I wasn't thinking... Blum you aren't using the site with the CSS yet.
The design actually looks pretty good so far. Smile

@ptmb: i liked the images that you had but i think they would be switched up just a bit, maybe we can make something out of mine and yours.

also, i was planning on having the image fixed so blending would not be a problem since it wont be tiled. i have already configured the website's css files taht you gave me to have a fixed image. and for the font color i ws thinking we could see how the current color holds up on that bknd. if not i can always make the image darker.

Bigger screens

I actually never liked images that don't scroll (my opinion only), but it must be how you like.
But remember that not all screens have 1024x768 (the size of the screens at your school as it seems) I am at 1280x1024 and I have set up Firefox' Web Developer Toolbar to show the sites I want to test to: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
If you plan to make the image totally fill up the screen, than keep dreaming, as it is not possible to stretch background images with CSS2 (that I know), so have in mind that, at least make it tile for sideways (repeat-x), align it to the top and make the background color the color most at the bottom of the image for keeping the look ok.

With the original color schemes (that I lost) those images looked ok, but now we need to improve the things. Can you send me your actual version of the in development site (or make it online on a subdir)? That way I can give a look to your code and see your image. If you have the source of the image (Photoshop template... SVG image...) can you send it to me too?

Here's the original file set that you sent me, i havent done much to it yet. in fact i believee all i did to my version was change the bknd to have some low color and lock the image. this is the original thogh so there is nothing done to these files.

Oh!

Ok. And thanks, I had deleted some of the comments on the CSS files, that the e-mailed version had. Now I have the original color set Smile I'll try to threat the CSS to show the original look.

Here it is the original look (the enter page was made after the theme change, so I didn't knew what color to give the white link)

that is really good! that works a lot better than what i had in mind! anyway, now that we have that done, i think we should work onl the way we display the different theme screenshots and types and crap like that. if you look Here, that is basically how i want everything to be divided up. the only thing is that i want to make the site just a little more "Modem Friendly" for thoes of up still bragging about our 56,000 Baud so i was thinking that in the catagory pages, we would have something like a screenshot of the menu only to the left and then a discription to the right with a link to the fullscreen shot and a jazzy look for the download link. lets see if i can do a basic outline below:

----------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
| Menu Pic | | Description |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | |------------------------------------------------|
| | | Jazzy link to screenshot and download. |
|---------------------------- |------------------------------------------------|

Something like that but obviously better looking.

Good Idea

Like a post page, easy. Another idea, for the ones with limited traffic was a small thumbnail floating to the right of the description, that would ease up the page download. Then the thumbnail would be linking to a full size image.

About your "browser like setup" Pardon (what, navigation friendly setup maybe?) it is pretty easy to make an sidebar (float: left;) but requires some work to be done.

the browser thing...

was taking off the massive 1024x768 full screenshots and just displaying the 406x573 menu screenshots instead and linking tothe full screenshots to lighten the load on people using Dial-Up and older DSL like 768k connections..

BTW, the thumbnail idea is good but i think it would be best if the thumbnail thing was limited to full screnshots that way people wold see the design of the menu better and then they could click on the thumbnail to check the menu in a full screenshot.

I think that is not needed

I think that is not needed to have 1024x768 screenshots of the menu as they are the same as the 406x573 ones. Don't forget that there are people that are at 640x480 screens (I don't know many, but I am sure there are some) and a screenshot like that ca make the layout "blow up" for them (you know, when in those online news articles that are a little "tube", and an image in the middle makes one word per line, I hate that.) So maybe something like half size (or less) screenshots, with links to pages with the full size screenshots.

I'll try to make some CSS to that and post a screen (and also the sidebar, even though I now don't have content to go there Blum ).
