I am currently happily running Portable FF2.0.0.15 from a USB Drive under WinXP at work.
I have downloaded the latest Portable FF3 release, and when trying to run it, it silently terminates and disappears from the Task Manager Processes list.
Trying to run it from the actual Executable within the App\firefox folder returns the following:
"F:\Documents\Downloads\FirefoxPortable\App\firefox\firefox.exe
Windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy. For more information, open Event Viewer or contact your system administrator."
I have tried changing the actual executable's name, I have tried changing the name of the EXE within the FirefoxPortable folder, I have also tried using the INI file to point to the renames executable as per the advice at https://portableapps.com/node/13288#comment-81275
I would contact my "system administrator", but obviously, they are applying this rule (through ignorance, or fear that free software is the spawn of Satan, or other such nonsense).
Funny that this affects FF3, but FF2.0.0.15 works fine...
Any ideas?
did u also change the executable after changing the name in the ini
eg. change F:\Documents\Downloads\FirefoxPortable\App\firefox\firefox.exe
to
F:\Documents\Downloads\FirefoxPortable\App\firefox\firefox1.exe
(if that is what you changed the program name to)
if that does not work they blocked the hash so u will hav 2 recompile the program
post with questions (if u have any)

Yep,
Changed the filename of the actual executable inside the PortableFF\App\firefox\ folder,
Changed the filename references in the INI file and placed it in the PortableFF\ folder
Changed the filename of the launching executable inside the PortableFF\ folder
Bugger - recompile the program? Never done that before - and tut's you can point me towards?
Or try to compress the executable with UPX, should do the trick.
but arent all apps upx'ed anyway?

Not all, but still worth the try
Perfect!
Did that - fixed it.
At last, running FF3 from my USB Drive.
Farewell FF2 - It was great while it lasted.
Thank the Gods I don't have to endure IE7 (the enforced SOE browser).
