HELLO
I am a complete novice newbie here so please bear with me.
Does Pa work like a portable hard drive with all your info on the flash drive.
What is the difference between a portable version of an application & the normal version , is it just a slimed down version of the full program so it takes up less space.
I noticed that a lot of the applications that are in the program are linux based , i have been forever trying to get to grips with linux but the sudo jobbie is a bit to dos like for me.
Does this software run similar to damn small linux were by you also install it on a usb flash drive.
I think thats enough questions for now.
Any help to a newbie would be great
Thanks very much
Dave

PortableApps makes apps portable so you can run your favorite open source applications with you. All you do is just download the portable apps and install them on your flash drive, iPod, MP3 player, External Hard Drive, Whatever. Install is simple. just tell it the drive letter, and tell it to install in the PortableApps folder on your flash drive. (if you dont have that folder yet, make one. ;))

Na na na, come on!
So does the program works like a mobile hard drive that has everything on it on a usb stick.
Do i need an existing operating system on a pc to run this program from the usb stick or can i just plug this in a pc with no operating system & it will be up & running.
Sorry for all the questions but just learning at present.
Cheers
Dave
You need windows (if you have wine on a linux operating system that will work to) to run these portable applications, and as long as you take your flash drive, or whatever, You will have all your settings.![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)

HELLO
That is well cool then , so i could put any basic os on my pc harddrive & then put pa on my usb drive with all the apps that i want on that.
This is great as i have a excellent slimmed down version of xp that i trimmed down using nlie software that is without all the thousands of printer drivers & different languages and other blotware that is needed.
So i can have a awesome fast os & put all the apps on the usb stick & encryted of course.
Cheers for the info mate
I will be on here a lot checking out new stuff

I dont understand your first line/question but I can answer the second![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
Yes. You need Windows or Linux with wine. Most of the Apps work on all Windows-versions.

That answer was even simpler.![Wink](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/wink.gif)

I thought i should mention a wicked little app that people may like on pa which is any video converter.
There are 2 versions of it a buying version & a free version & the free version is just amazing as it transfers videos into different formats like avi to mpg etc & you can even download stuff off the you tube website if required.
Give a google for any video converter & i think that a lot of people will like this free little app as it is fairly small & does the job better than most of the other similar programs.

Even Windows 3.1? We still have a computer with it. Maybe I'll have to try PA on there...
There's no place like 127.0.0.1
Check the Applications compatibility page for detailed infos about what App needs which version of Windows or take a look at the page of the App in question.

PApps work on absolutely ANY device as long as it has enough space and plugs into the computer.
The portable one changes the way the settings are saved so taht all of the settings are saved in the Data folder. They are slimmed down using UPX, an EXE compressor.
They are mostly Linux based because linux has an open source nature, and open source allows modification without permission, thereby making it a very obvious candidate. Also linux apps would gauruntee more cross-platform support (at least that's what I think).
John (the leader etc. of the site) is planning to make DSL portable as soon as something I don't know happens. ;).
Anyway, keep the questions coming!

Does the installer leave anything in the registry of the computer your do the install on?
Welcome to the site![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
Depends on what you mean by anything?
The registry keeps track of all files run so the fact that you ran the installer would be recorded in the MRU section, but the installers themselves will not leave anything behind of themselves.
Does that answer your question?
If your concern is the apps themselves and not the installers read this topic:

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
It would be great if there were a place to get answers on all these basic questions.
All people don't like to search for answers in the forum, or create topics with questions.
Just an idea![Biggrin](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/biggrin.gif)
Nothing here right now... I might put something here later, who knows? Or will I? I really have to think about this...
