There is a miranda and a miranda_ansi folder and they both seem to have the same stuff inside... so where do I put the plugins? Sorry if that's obvious but I'm totally new to miranda (switched from Trillian) and I couldn't find anything about this.

Put unicode plugins under miranda. Put ANSI plugins in the miranda_ansi folder.
If you don't use 9x, you can just put them in the miranda folder

Thanks! I tried putting them in there and it all worked but I just decided to ask so I don't make some crash later on...
One more question - how do I get the Miranda IM Profile Manager screen? I want to create a new profile but I just can't find that menu... I guess I could rename my current profile so it will give me the menu to create a profile and once I create it I will just name back my old one... but I really hate to do stuff artificially when it has the option somewhere.
Don't know. You could create a new .dat file and then load/edit that one, I guess
