more portable than portableapps - storage on server

Hello

intro:
(Today is a bad day. My whole external harddisc is broken. This is the 4th time in my life an external hdd broke, but its my fault. 2 times fall down and 2 times wrong voltage.....

On this hdd i had a whole portableapps environment.

So today i will order a corsair 64gb flash drive
)

but i thought to be more portable and more free than only by using portableapps.
For example the program keypass. Its really a good programm but i used it only for internet passwords. so i installed
phppassmanager on my server for store my passwords.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/phppassmanager/

then, the 2 programms i used most of course .... firefox and thunderbird
and there i wanted to discuss about:

Instead of make the whole broswer portable, making only the profile portable, because on many systems, there are already the FF and TB.
so its possible to use it on linux and mac too.
starting firefox with:
firefox.exe -P in windows or
./firefox -ProfileManager in Linux

f.x. on a german system:

"C:\Programme\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profile "D:\\Profiles\\Profilordner"

makes it possible to create a profile and choose a folder, f.x. existing one on external flashdrive, or better: on a server.

same for thunderbird.

so, most time no flash is used, only sometimes when using gimp under windows f.x., or when using documents or media.
In my case i think i would use the flashdrive 75% less when firefox, thunderbird and passwords are stored online.

What do u think about this and do u have some ideas about this?

I really don't like this ideia for some reasons:

1. What if the host PC have a virus on firefox.exe?
2. Or if the version isn't the same of your profile version?
3. Or even if the host doesn't have firefox? You'll need it on your flashdrive...

I think we should leave the things as they are now.

sure its right like it is

sure its right like it is now.

1 what u mean with host PC? the pc where i use Portable Apps?
When the environment is infected, it will probably infect portable apps environment too, except read only, but firefox dont like read only mode

2 they are compatible, exept maybe extensions when i use FF 3.0.x and on host there is 3.1 or 2.x

3 no, i can download it from sourceforge.com

usually speed is okay. today

usually speed is okay.

today i went one important step farer:
i installed zimbra on my webserver.
http://www.zimbra.com/
zimbra is made by jahoo and there are 2 versions: commercial and Opensource
of course i use opensource version

zimbra is a web-based e-mail client with much confort like thunderbird, with gpg-encryption and a calendar. (installation was difficult to me on gentoo but worked finally)
i secured all with htaccess

now i dont need thunderbird no more, because everywhere i can use a browser

Ok I see

I see the thinking behind what you are saying but PA is designed to be portable without relying, or leaving behind any traces, on the host pc. remember that.

when u use f.x. firefox or

when u use f.x. firefox or thunderbird of portable apps on windows okay that might be right usually, but this is clearly not sure. in this forum there are many discussions about key- or c&p-logging which make u leave trace.
U can never be sure, in netcafe that the whole tcp/ip connection is not filtered for informations, dont care if use u r own version or portable one.

Of course there are some portable programs like gimp or openoffice where its very good they are portable. but all what has to do with internet like email browsing or server connections or password database can be done via a save browser connected with u r own save server
