I need to go get my computer fixed (Conficker winged me, locked me out). I'm going to get it fixed, if possible this week, but have some concerns about re-infection. I've had my USB drives both plugged into my computer since Conficker.A was discovered, and realize that using CWP might re-infect my computer because I'm launching something off of the drive. Should I be concerned? What should I do? I might be able to get Norton Internet Security to scan my drive once I reconfigure that, but what if I can't? I know to turn Autorun off (if not exactly how. help?), so it doesn't read the drive.
Sorry if it's the wrong area, but this seems CWP-related.
Sorry, my Wii's browser glitched. Please delete this topic, not the other.
Hey! Where'd it go?
I'm pretty sure that unless you have a U3 drive it won't autorun. Also I believe that if you hold the shift(?) key when you insert it will not autorun.

cowthink 'Dude, why are you staring at me.'
I'll look around. If the autorun menu comes up, but doesn't execute anything on the drive, is it still safe?
And, another concern is my brother's U3 enabled drive. Can it be stopped from launching when plugged in?
Hey! Where'd it go?
Hold down the Shift key when you plug it in, for say up to half a minute, just to make sure.
But it shouldn't be an issue, as the U3 autorun partition is read-only and AFAIK Conficker can't take advantage of a U3-enabled drive.

Somebody posted something a while ago, here, pointing out that the partition that acts like a CD drive can be modified. Might it be prudent to run a system scan after scanning my drives when my computer's fixed?
So, it's Shift?
Also, can Norton Internet Security detect Conficker (or, as they call it, Downadup)?
Hey! Where'd it go?
Always be cautious of what you do online, don't get Norton, It's a resource hog. try using avg 8.5, you'll be able to scan your usb with this av as well as clamwin ( its what I do). to turn off autorun to need to hack your own registry.
the keys you need to modify (in regedit):
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:000000ff
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:000000ff
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:000000ff
Panda I think has a usb vaccine...
I hope this helps.
It wasn't conficker, but I had to run a system restore on my computer. I'm trying to get free antivirus right now, until my mom can configure the ISP's AV software. Is Avast Home Edition any good?
Hey! Where'd it go?
In my experience, Avast is far better than AVG in the free anti-virus stakes.
It is clean, lightweight, seems OK at finding viruses, is easy to install, and easy to uninstall.
Avast seems to work on older systems a lot better. Oddly both have Linux ports o.o
Do we have avast home edition portable here?
irwanwr
No, unfortunately the only portable version of Avast authorized by ALWIL Software is for U3 drives and is not transferable to standard flash drives.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
That's from what I've heard too. I had originally suggested avg because of its portable media scanning abilities. Also to let arinlares know there is a u3 hack out there and I don't trust that software.
I didn't have conficker, according to the guy fixing my computer. It was an HD error. I read that U3 can be modified from this forum, and don't use the software myself, but my brother thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Just to be sure, I scanned my drive with ClamWin and Avast Home Edition. Both came clean.
Hey! Where'd it go?
