Download Bombermaaan Portable 1.4 Dev Test 3 [1.77MB download / 1.8MB installed]
(MD5: 5fd2c80985633a899cafce6168b185d4)
Release Notes:
1.4 Dev Test 4 (September 22 2011):
- Updated to PAL beta 4
1.4 Dev Test 3 (August 12 2009):
- Fixed a nasty bug where the Levels folder wasnt created if the settings file was there resulting in a non functional game on upgrade.
1.4 Dev Test 2 (August 12 2009):
- A Couple of small updates: Now it saves the Level files in the Data folder so you can safely create your own Levels or download them from the Bombermaaans SF.net page
- I also removed the second exe. I think its only purpose was a smaller screen size. But it saved 1 mb so I ditched it
1.4 Dev Test 1 (August 11 2009):
- Initial Release
- Unfortunately it needs DirectX 7.0 and up. Is that a show stopper?
- There is one bug I found: If you set the game to full screen, exit and restart, my copy stopped working and I had to hit Esc and delete my settings file to make it work again.
I only tested it in Win XP SP2 limited account. Could someone try Vista and Win2000 please?
Thanks Patrick for the hosting!
I hope you enjoy this little game!!!
testing on vista home premium 64 bit it works

thanks.
The package is still rather big. Maybe I'll ditch the bombermaaan_16.exe. Might save some space and I guess there is noone playing it smaller than she/he has to???

This is awesome, I've been waiting for somebody to do a bomberman game. Thanks!
The only thing I think you need to copy over to the Data folder is the Levels folder. You can create your own levels as well as download other levels to this folder. If the user performs an upgrade, all custom levels will be erased.
EDIT: Also, it looks like you can run multiple instances of the program. You should do something to prevent that so the settings don't get messed up.
I'll look into that. And yes you're right about the Level folder.

Does a clean install (empty data folder) work?
Does an upgrade from Dev Test 1 work?
There shouldnt be a difference between the 2 but I want to be sure.

it works on clean install not on upgrade on vista

I know now what I missed.
The Levels folder wasnt created if the settings file was there so after an upgrade, it wouldnt start.
Fixed in Dev Test 3.

Same here, but you could start it and press F4. Then exit and after a restart it is in window mode again.
I think a good solution could be:
The launcher should set the Display mode before each launch. Adjusting the config.xml to:
I informed the dev about this and maybe he can fix it.
IN the meantime, yours seems to be a good fix

Hi Simeon, Bombermaaan Portable isn't listed on the Test Releases page.
Hi.
Well, I haven't used your Portable version, but only the original SF Bombermaaan, and that NEVER, EVER happened to me! So it must be a bug in your launcher. In my local version (still portable by nature), I simply hit F3 once, played, restarted the game and it starts OK in full screen. It switches to Windowed mode easily with F4 if I want. On my Pentium III I have it always set to full screen, not once in my life had I had a bug with it nor even a bug related to Bombermaaan in any way! And believe me, I play this game like every day
Well, as a programmer, you should have noticed that that one is actually for 16bit computers and OSs. Since they are practically not in use anymore, it's OK to remove it. The Bombermaaan_16.exe was not there to provide the smaller screen size, but to offer ability to 16bit computers to run it.
On another note, that latest "stable" release, which is the same one I've never had any trouble with in my life, and the same one you've used in your "Portable" version and encountered that full-screen bug, dates back to 2008. Bombermaaan is still actively maintained, and even though it's not considered a "stable" version, you might want to try out the "experimental" version compiled in 2010. Also, in the newer versions, the authors have dropped Bombermaaan_16.exe as well, and made an executable for playing it with XBox controllers (the Bombermaaan_xbox.exe). This "experimental" version is actually a lot more stable then one might think from it's name. There have been numerous bug-fixes over the last few years, and some (at this point in time) unnecessary files have been dropped from the game and replaced with some more useful ones...
PS: I use both versions, the "stable" on a Pentium III, and the "experimental" on a lot newer dual-core machine. Newer had I experienced any other bugs except one that the developer is aware of and is caused by using type 2 maps (where players start off as skilled). But this is related to the maps being type 2, and you can experience it in both the stable and the experimental versions. The bug is that sometimes, one of the bombs on the screen explodes, but afterwords is still displayed as being there waiting to explode. The bots are playing as if it's not there (because it isn't), but it can confuse a human player who sees it.
I hope this "review" was useful to you in some way, and that you'll at least consider moving to the more stable "experimental" version of Bombermaaan.
Cheers
My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.
and the launcher isn't the problem (maybe UPX-compression, but I don't think so). If I look at the log.txt, I see the following:
Btw: Simeon, maybe you would like to add that to your bug report (ID: 2835426), I don't have a sourceforge account.
Simon, there is a continue to Bombermaaan game:
https://github.com/bjaraujo/Bombermaaan
Currently latest release v1.9.6.2074
There also v2.x alpha versions.
Will you continue to support it?
