Portable firefox speed directly related to the amount of themes/extensions installed?

I have removed the extra themes and Firefox seems quite a bit more speedy on loading up, do I need to remoce extensions to gain speed or is it just themes that slow it down?

Depends on the themes and extensions. Some add quite a lot of weight. Most normal extensions (no session stuff or crash recovery) won't affect things much, though.

You shouldn't have much of a slowdown with the vast majority of extensions. When they are first installed, there is a slowdown because Fx needs to edit extensions.rdf, prefs.js, and possibly others, which takes a while. I have 50+ extensions, and usually have no problem with speed.
