SRWare is doing the hosting,

SRWare is doing the hosting, yes. I've already arranged to send them the official build of Iron Portable once it's ready.

I'm not sure if SRWare wants a splash, but I can't imagine they would say no. I'll drop them a note anyway, then let you know when they reply.
I just got a note back from SRWare:

if the users prefer a splash screen, then you should probably add one, if it doesn't delays the launch too much.

I've already sent a note back, telling them that the splash doesn't delay the launch at all.

Official release tomorrow?

I've been in contact with SRWare again today, and they're planning to release Iron Portable tomorrow. Do you want to release tomorrow as well, John, or do you want to wait until Monday?

Either way, I'll post the official download link here as soon as I get it from SRWare.

no noscript support

I can't allow only some scripts for any given page, it is all scripts or nothing, at least with the one-click button, without manually entering exceptions. No-Script allows me to allow scripts from the host site while blocking others like google-analytics. Doing stuff sans google trumps using a google chrome clone, however nice it is. I can use it when Seamonkey fails, though. Firefox is too slow and doesn't automatically connect to thunderbird. So, it is Seamonkey with Iron as a backup browser. Works great as a browser, though, just lacks certain essential features. Making it google-like is not as important as hearing the voice of the people (like me). [I suppose the relevant Iron people would read this forum (?)]

google-like

Iron is not google-like it is basically the same codebase as Chrome, with a few small (but key) changes on the privacy front.

Also, noscript is nothing to to with Iron, or Chrome, or Firefox, or Seamonkey. It is a separate third-party addon (which I use here and find wonderful). If you want to be able to use noscript with Iron, you need to talk to the people who wrote noscript, and ask them to do a version for Chrome, which will then work fine with Iron, so you can use it.

security

the control seems adequate, though I prefer seamonkey with no-script. I'm not sure about seamonkey as an in-private browser, though, which seems to be the main attraction of chrome-iron. It is fast, too, though not much faster than seamonkey, it seems. It does seem to be more compatible with some sites. I will continue with it.

thanks

We are ready to go!

SRWare has approved and uploaded the official build of Iron Portable!

http://www.srware.net/downloads/Iron_PortableApps.paf.exe

I've downloaded it and verified that it's exactly the same as my build (the MD5 hashes match), so it's totally clean. We're ready for the official release at any time.

Once Iron Portable has been officially released, could a mod please lock this topic? It's no longer necessary, and may cause some confusion.

Thank you very much!

Why...

Why, oh why, do they rename it... it'd be good if you'd request that they change the name back to including the version number, and just set up a redirect to the latest version with the correct file name if they want a consistent download location.

I noticed the renaming, too, but I didn't think it would be an issue. I'll send them a change request immediately.

Thanks, I'm actually aware of

Thanks, I'm actually aware of the update and have been since it was released.
Unfortunately, I can't update my portable version yet, since I've found a bug in it - saved passwords aren't remembered properly if you save them on one computer and try to use them on another. I tried to use Chrome Portable's PortablePasswords module to fix this, but it's not Unicode-compatible so I'll need to rewrite it. That's going to take a few days.

I may rewrite the Iron Portable launcher as a hand-coded launcher as a stopgap fix (since a hand-coded launcher can be compiled with Ansi NSIS, which would make PortablePasswords work), but I'm trying to avoid that if possible.

Crashing on Win7 64bit

Has anyone tried the "official" build on Win7 64bit? It keep crashing for me after launch, seconds after the main browser window appears.

Nevermind: I had originally "updated" a development version, apparently installing the latest version to a completely new folder makes this problem go away.

Thanks for the PAF version, but...

I have been using SRWare's Iron "portable" zip version. It works just fine but is self-contained. That's great for almost every app except a web browser, especially one built on Chromium.

SRWare's version writes the Cache to the Iron app directory on the USB flash. Not only does that create an excessive amount of writes but it contributes to a common problem that bogs down the browser (just Google "waiting for cache" - it has been reported on every browser built from Chromium source). I tried relocating the cache to the HDD, to a RAMdisk, and even to NUL, but moving it seemed to freak the browser out and it would just lock up for periods of time.

I downloaded IronPortable from here hoping that it would treat caching much the same way as ChromePortable but it doesn't appear that's the case.

IronPortable does create an IronPortable folder in %userprofile%\localsettings\temp and it creates etilqs_* files there but all of the files have a size of 0 bytes. I'm not sure what the function is. In the meantime, the cache is being written to \IronPortable\Data\IronPortableData\Default\Cache. Using the browser for 4-5 hours causes it to slow by 50% or more and the USB activity is off the charts.

I realize that I can add a command line switch to the INI file to change the location of the Cache but given the issues I had with SRWare's version, I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. I will try it but also thought you might want to look at changing the location of the cache by default in a future release.

On a different note, the INI has a "cleanup if empty" section for %localappdata%\Chromium\Data. I'm not sure why but sometimes it simply creates the directory and leaves it there. I can delete it manually. What's perplexing is that it doesn't create it EVERY time.

FYI for anybody that's interested...

Since the IronPortable launcher automatically sets the %TEMP% variable and automatically creates and removes %TEMP%\IronPortableTemp, you can do the following to write cache to HDD and have it automatically flushed when you close the browser.

Open IronPortable\App\AppInfo\Launcher\IronPortable.ini.

Here is how it looks by default:

[Launch]
ProgramExecutable=Iron\Iron.exe
CommandLineArguments=--user-data-dir="%PAL:DataDir%\IronPortableData" --lang=%PAL:LanguageCustom%
SingleAppInstance=false

Just add the disk cache command line switch in teh second line:

[Launch]
ProgramExecutable=Iron\Iron.exe
CommandLineArguments=--user-data-dir="%PAL:DataDir%\IronPortableData" --lang=%PAL:LanguageCustom% --disk-cache-dir="%TEMP%"
SingleAppInstance=false

[Use <pre> instead of <code> for blocks of code - mod Chris]

When will be released Iron Portable as main branch?
https://portableapps.com/apps/internet

SRWare Iron portable is in development stage long and could be in main apps within other browsers soon I think.

Update

Yes, I wanted to have Portable Passwords working by last Thursday or Friday. Unfortunately, a series of events, both IRL and in my attempts to work on Portable Passwords, made this impossible.
I finally got Portable Passwords working with Ansi NSIS, but at the cost of rewriting the entire launcher in handcoded NSIS instead of using PAL. Because of the magnitude of this change, I've created a new topic for the new Iron Portable release. Please post any comments related to Iron Portable there.

Thank you!
