WIN98 -->> Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 YES, same Portable Version NO?

(( strange, i thought i had posted this two hours ago, now vanished. if anyone
finds it somewhere in the depths of the forums, sorry, but pls let me know ))

installing and running Tbird 2.0.024 on a number of W98 computer works without
a hitch, several tried for long time now.

trying the same with the portable version, same release, again on several computers,
installs, but when trying to run, always comes up with the "Illegal Command" error,
and then closes. never managed to get one running.

what am i doing or thinking wrong here?

greetings - heinz -

Should Work

It should work. I just installed it and fired it up on my Windows 98 SE test box and it worked just fine. Are the machines Windows 98 SE and fully updated to Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 and all subsequent patches done? Without all that, it will not work.

Also, keep in mind that we've dropped support for Windows 95, 98, Me across the platform and all apps as of April. All apps released after that point as well as the 2.0 platform beta and final no longer support Windows versions prior to Windows 2000.

john, tks for yr reply, and

john, tks for yr reply, and tks for checking this out. i know support
for WIN98 was dropped, but you still refer them to that legacy version
of 2.0.024, and you did NOT drop support of PEOPLE who for whatever
unfortunate reason (sick? money? the only thing they can get?) have
to stick to WIN98 - remember, i am helping too, these are not my computers.

will check if they are SE, but even then, what could be the difference between
normal installed and portable version? and yes, IE6sp1 is there, though
i always failed to understand where the connection to TBx comes from - still
a lot to learn.

many greeting, and again tks for the efforts - heinz -

just checked

I am also one of those who still operate and use for certain things w98, in various languages, on partition or in virtual machine.

Have just tested TBP 2024 on w98se, german, works fine as always did.

(is one of the reasons I use TBportable version 2024 as my main portable mail client, since it works on on all my systems so far)
