It's open source, and based on Mozilla Firefox but optimized for sites like Facebook and Myspace.
Looks like a good candidate, but why?
(also keep the chatroom-type slang to a minimum, please)
hi hunter067. i dont want "old" flock i want "new" flock.
bcaus old alrady exist
"old" flock is based on Firefox as u said.
"new" is based on chromium
// 1 guy that needs your help
you where asked nicely. some of us old fogies cant understand this confounded alien language you young punks speak.
ENGLISH PLEASE!
GERMAN GOES IN THE GERMAN BOARD ONLY!
Uh, I think I was speaking pretty clear US version English when I made my post.
He's not talking to you. He's talking to the wasp1234. The indented comments show who's replying to who.
Mir deserves a high five
When did this internet slang thing start? It needs to seriously die.. >_
that version is outdated.
The chrome flock is the newer, faster, and simply put, better version. I already have firefox and chrome portable, but i'm also looking for the chromium flock portable. Is this possible?
We don't know how we'll have to work on it unless we know what the license is. Is it open source? Freeware? Can we redistribute it? Can we use its trademarks (not likely)?
http://socializedsoftware.com/2008/03/07/review-flock-open-source-social...
Even from just reading that link, i think flock is open sourced...And isn't Chromium open source from the beginning? Its like Chromium with some social networking built in. I would guess it is open source. And it definitely is freeware
I downloaded it.
I'll see about making a portable version. I'll also research the trademarks and such.
*fingers crossed*
EDIT: [new] Flock is weird. It looks like it doesn't respond well to being moved. It installs to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Flock and it seems like simply copying it and pasting it to the desktop (from the sandbox in Sandboxie) doesn't work. If you "run sandbox" it works, if you don't it doesn't. If you delete your sandbox and still run sandboxed, it doesn't work. I even tried copying the Flock folder to %LOCALAPPDATA% outside the sandbox, didn't work.
It looks like the makers of flock don't want anyone to make a portable version of their browser
This is in the terms and conditions when you DL Flock:
Flock Browser License
The executable code version of the Flock browser is made available under the terms set forth below. Source code for parts of the Flock browser may be available for use under open source licenses as set forth in more detail at http://code.google.com/chromium/terms.html (and pages linked thereto). Nothing in this Agreement will be construed to limit any rights granted under such open source licenses with respect to code specifically covered by such licenses.
Subject to the terms hereof, Flock grants you a personal, non-exclusive license to install and use the executable code version of the Flock browser. Flock and its licensors shall retain all intellectual property rights in the Flock browser (and Service), except for the rights expressly granted in this Agreement. You may not remove or alter any trademark, or logo (collectively, “Marks”), copyright or other proprietary notice on the Flock browser. This license does not grant you any right to use Marks of Flock or its licensors. If you breach this Agreement, the above license and your right to use the Flock browser will terminate immediately and without notice. Upon termination, you must destroy all copies of the Flock browser.
This seems to say that whatever parts of the browser are already open source are still open source, but stops short of saying that their mods are open source.
There also doesn't seem to be a link to download the Flock source, although it might be contained in the download itself.
Correct, the new Flock is not open source. It is based on Chromium, but as Chromium is under mainly BSD/MIT licenses, no alterations that the Flock folks make need ever be released back to the community.
With it being closed-source, we have to make an online installer, right?
With that and the problems mentioned above, this one is going to be a tough nut to crack.
It seems to respond just fine to "movement"
Does anyone want this version of Flock, Portable?
isn't this functionality available in firefox with some add-ons?
As one who is dumping facebook and never did bother with tweeter, I don't see the appeal. Anyway, if they wan't to be proprietary and non-portable, then to the pit with them...
Can we see about making PortableApps.com a Social Networking site?
thanks
if PA.c becomes a socal networking site (which is not its purpose) it will be banned/blocked. those of us who try and help support it will dissapear into a neverending marathon of anime or work.
but thank God for proxies
i would have DHS and OIG (google it n00b) on my @$$ so quick its not funny.
I'm with you, I don't really see the point of Flock, it's still just Mozilla/Chrome with some bells and whistles attached.
I'm still waiting for Lynx Portable.
good one
i would use it
thanks, i hope it happens
You do know that lynx is a command line browser, that doesn't support n-line images, or java-script, or flash or anything else?
Its neat because it will get around Faronics Insight web browsing blocker. Otherwise, I don't really have much of a use for it.
We really need a "sarcasm smiley" for this website.
I'm quite happy with the 3 dozen portable browsers we already have to choose from.
Oh, but I forgot one important thing.
Facebook isn't cool enough to support Lynx. That's what they say! I'm serious!
(And my reply wasn't directed towards you.)
I released one a few days ago:
https://portableapps.com/node/24696
That was @jamvaru
i'm using it, to be social, but...
I was hoping you were pointing to a portable lynx
it is geeky-cool to browse with only text and keyboard, not having to see flash or pictures or video or hear audio...
true retro geek heaven
but thanks
what social sites do you prefer?
[btw, loving seamonkey, very fast, works great, using pop instead of imap (sucks!)... deleting all from server, keeping on stick, wonderful!!!]
that is the Firefox version.
but i wants the chromium version...
you'll find that the Chromium one has some fundamental problems with being portable, including
So Pyromaniac asked if anyone would find the FF one better than nothing, and kindly provided it.
If you really want the Chromium one done, then I would suggest that you petition the writers of Flock itself to either change their code and their licence, or to do a portable version themselves.
You guys i got found Flock Portable try go to link here [Link to illegal software packager removed by mod JTH] you can try it.
I've been looking for a Portable version of Flock so that I may be able to add it to my 'List of Awesome Web Browsers' to take along with me wherever... I have 11 web browsers on the list, Flock is one of them I want it in portable form so I can use it wherever..... Thanks.
there is already a portable version. I posted this earlier in the topic.
